Fort St. John Mayor Accepts Ice Bucket Challenge

Tuesday, August 19, 2014 @ 4:39 PM

Fort St. John, B.C. – Fort St. John Mayor Lori Ackerman took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge this afternoon at Centennial Park.

Under the rules of the contest participants must either dump a bucket of ice water over their heads or donate to the ALS Society of Canada.

However Ackerman took things one step further and paid (she raised $250) and played after being challenged by Barriere Mayor Bill Humphreys.

"It's a worthy cause. A good friend of ours here in the Northeast, former Pouce Coupe Mayor Larry Flynn died last December of ALS. "

Ackerman adds the fun won't end there as she's challenged three others including Attorney General Suzanne Anton, Education Minister Peter Fassbender and Health Minister Terry Lake.

"We're really trying to build community here and community is based on a foundation of safety, good education and good health."

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

She says donations to help fight ALS can be made at www.alsbc.ca.

…ok, we get it… this meme is over now.

Yes, it is difficult to endure the Facebook and Twitter postings that have raised millions of dollars to fight a fatal illness. An utterly gruelling task to scroll past if you aren’t interested. Perhaps we should do an nice bucket challenge to raise money to support people who are tired of ice bucket challenges – the true victims.

This is a great way to raise money for a very worthy cause, but its also a great way for hundreds of people not involved with the actual research that needs to be done to earn money that is aimed at research. I am referring to the fact that only 50% of the dollars raised goes to research, the rest goes to admin and promotion.
