Prince George, B.C. – Saturday was a great day to be in downtown Prince George, specifically in the vicinity of City Hall.
There was the third and final Downtown Market Fair of this summer on the City Hall grounds, and just across the way on 6th Avenue, the Prince George Farmers’ Market was open for business as usual. But the big draw by far was the free community Pancake Breakfast put on by Canfor. It was superb, and extremely well attended by the citizens of PG.
The Canfor Mill Manager at Isle Pierre sawmill, Joe Kavanagh, explained that the company was “having a celebration with the Prince George folks. Canfor had their 75th anniversary last year and we celebrated with all the communities by doing Canada Day. This year we want to do something with all the communities again, so we organized something with the City of Prince George and the Farmers’ Market, and this is what we’re doing this year as well as the fireworks that we sponsored on Canada Day.”
Ask if he was surprised at the large turnout for the breakfast Kavanagh responded “No not really, this is what we expected, we had a great turnout to the Canada Day celebrations and when you have the new Iron Chef of Prince George cooking your pancakes you expect people to turn out and try the pancakes and see if they’re the best in Prince George and they certainly are.”
Not only were there enormous amounts of food and huge crowds. There were prizes as well. As seen below (right), Joe Kavanagh presents her prize to “Eri”.
Kavanagh says he really enjoyed himself adding he would like to see the event continue but says that’s a decision that will be made by someone other than him.

Nice to see corporations with some community spirit. I hope the homeless got in on it too.
It was good to see people from all walks of life “breaking bread”. Kudos to Canfor.
