Team Black Defeats Team White in the Cougars Annual Black and White Game.
Monday night in Prince George in front of 1021 fans, Team Black defeated Team White 10-3 in the Prince George Cougars Training Camp Black and White Game. 17-year-old Cougars hopeful Aaron Boyd (Winnipeg, MB) had two goals for Black while 20-year-old forward Chance Braid responded with two goals for White in a losing cause.
Before the puck even dropped, the Prince George Cougars recognized 20-year-old forward Chance Braid with the Mountain Lion Award, a new plaque created for the Cougar player who showed up to training camp in the best shape. Braid’s night was far from over.
Team Black took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Detroit Red Wings prospect Marc McNulty opened the scoring with his patented wrist shot from the left point. Jari Erricson quickly countered with a goal for White to bring the game back to even terms, but Chase Witala quickly responded for Black to give them a 2-1 cushion. Goaltender Matt Kustra turned aside 12 of the 13 shots he faced in the first for black while Brandon Wells made 13 saves off of 15 shots faced.
4:12 into the second period, Chance Braid tied the score at two when he converted of a Kody McDonald pass. But back came Black when Colby McAuley forced the puck free along the right wing boards, and then roofed a shot over the shoulder of Wells to restore black’s lead. Aaron Macklin then scored a beauty on the back-hand from in close to give Black a 4-2 cushion. Through two periods the shots were 27-21 in favor of Black.
The third period belonged entirely to the Black side as Aaron Boyd (with two), Shane Collins, Hadyn Hopkins, and Blake Holowaty all found the score sheet. Chance Braid had the lone tally in the third for White.
After the game, Cougars scouting director Bob Simmonds presented the new Rob Charney Cup to Marc McNulty in honor of the late Rob Charney, a long-time Cougars scout who passed away due to cancer in March of 2013.
The Prince George Cougars will now be trimming their roster in preparation for their trip to St. Albert where they’ll play Red Deer on Saturday and Medicine Hat on Sunday.
A huge shout out goes out to the Prince George Cougars fans who came out in droves on Monday night to support the Cougar hopefuls and the New Ice Age. To the 1021 fans in attendance tonight, the Cougars sincerely thank you for your support. We’ll see you back at the rink on September 5th when the Cougars welcome the defending Memorial Cup Champions, the Edmonton Oil Kings to town.
