Timberwolves Wrap Up Weekend with a Tie
Prince George, BC – Sidney Roy’s goal in extra time tied up the game for the Timberwolves on Sunday morning. The UNBC Timberwolves tied the visiting UBC Okanagan 1-1 in their second game of the weekend, moving both teams to a 0-0-2 record.
The Heat were first to make it on the scoreboard. In the 19th minute Justine Drosdovech (Kelowna, BC) crossed the ball off a free kick to Haley Carlson (Red Deer, AB) and Carlson was able to slip the ball past the UNBC keeper. On the board 1-0 the Heat carried their narrow lead for the majority of the game.
Starting the second half down 1-0 the UNBC Timberwolves pushed the ball up field, hammering it behind the Heat’s back line to create a chance to even the score. In the 65th minute Tianna Pius (Prince George, BC) cracked a long ball from 20 yards out that grazed the top of the crossbar. The Heat counter with their own attack from rookie forward Courtney Hemmerling (Kelowna, BC). Hemmerling’s shot from the top right corner of the box sailed inches away from left post.
Michelle Smith (Vernon, BC) put UNBC’s keeper under pressure again in the 87th minute when she intercepted a ball in the midfield. Smith hit a gap in the defensive line and fired a shot square at the net but it bounced off the crossbar.
The Timberwolves finally found their break when Sydney Hall (Prince George, BC) flicked on a through ball to Sidney Roy (Burnaby, BC) who slotted it into the far right corner. The Timberwolves goal in extra time gave them a 1-1 finish against the UBCO Heat.
The UBC Okanagan Heat will travel to the Fraser Valley next weekend to take on the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night, followed by the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday evening.
The UNBC Timberwolves continue their Canada West season next weekend when they head to Vancouver for a double header against the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday and Sunday.
