Victoria Sends Advisory Letter to Mt. Polley
Prince George, B.C. – The Ministry of Environment has sent an advisory letter to Mt. Polley Mining Corporation to take “prompt action to abate all discharges from the tailings storage facility into the receiving environment.”
The ministry says Imperial Metals has been found to be “out of compliance” because tailings pond effluent was still leaking into Hazeltine Creek during a government inspection September 4.
While the discharges have stopped since then, ministry staff are concerned future rain events will trigger further discharges.
The ministry says this advisory is the first step of an escalating enforcement response to a violation of the Environmental Management Act.
All of this after nearly 25 million cubic metres of contaminated water and mine waste spilled into surrounding waterways on August 4.

Already?
A month after the spill, still effluent leaking into the creek and the 2nd most important salmon fishery in the Fraser system and all they get is a letter? Whats next, are they going to send Imperial Metals to bed without supper…nice to know that people that fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars to the ruling Liberals get treated just like the rest of society (sarcasm alert)
Laws are for little people. Same as jail and punishment.
There were earlier comments which mentioned that you couldn’t go in with blazing guns and clean the mess up. Most likely Imperial Mines will ask the Liberal government time to do another study on cleanup procedures and knowing this government it will be granted. Jail time and punishment – I agree.
Read lots of posts how they will have%99 cleaned up etc.
Lies from the mine as well saying it was stopped. What else would you expect from a mining company who bought Clark last election.
P Val no-one buy’s a politician , they are only for rent until the end of their term. :-)
It won’t be too long in the future that Christy will move onwards – just like Gordon Campbell- how about director of finance for Enbridge or CEO of Imperial Mines or maybe a maintenance director for LNG!! Better yet how about a cleanup expert advisor for China!!
Um folks, no one knows how the failure occurred yet.
Increasing levels in the pond beyond design capacity and shoring it up with dirt all the while ignoring concerns from inspectors, engineers, and staff. Perhaps that may have caused the collapse? Or maybe it was mine gremlins.
