Minister of Education Responds to BCTF Vote
Victoria BC – Education Minister Peter Fassbender has issued a statement on the BCTF vote results. The teachers voted overwhelmingly in favor of returning to work if the province would agree to sending the dispute to binding arbitration.
“The results of this vote were widely expected and understandable” says Minister Fassbender “We know BC teachers want schools re-opened. That is a goal we all share. “As we have consistently made clear, binding arbitration would lead to unacceptable tax increases in this case. That’s because the two sides remain too far apart on wages and benefits. “The best way to resolve this labour dispute remains at the negotiating table. “I will continue to call on the BCTF to suspend this strike and get into the affordability zone, just like 150,000 other hard-working women and men in the public sector who have settled this year.”

So right now we are paying principals over $100,000 for doing nothing, maybe we should deduct 10% off there wage because they are not doing anything.
I wonder if fastbender has seen the global interview!
Find the money just like you do for everything else.
Just in case you missed the interview here it is!
Global Interview
buzzing, maybe you should contact the BCTF and suggest that they get their demands into a more reasonable range, something that the TAXPAYERS can afford!!
The tax payers can afford it the government just wishes not to settle.
We abviously can afford Fassbenders hefty pension and wages 3x more then the teachers without crying so to me B.C. has all the money in the world.
Hart Guy,
“contact the BCTF and suggest that they get their demands into a more reasonable range”
this where I believe the gov’t is being deceitful.
again check out Global TV’s interview with Garossino.
It’s all about priorities.

Businesses are taxpayers to. It is time their rates went up. BC has the lowest corporate tax rate of any other province. We could raise corporate rates 0.85% and still be the lowest of any province. Raise it 1% and still be below the Canadian average.
The government collected more last year in Medical Premiums than they did from Corporations. That is mind boggling.
It is about priorities and the liberals do not care about education.
This is called “defunding” 1991, 26% of BC’s budget went to public education, 2000 20%, 2010 15% and now 13.7%
Furthermore for Hartguy. If the BCTF demands are so unreasonable then arbitration is perfect. Government will show how unreasonable the demands are and the BCTF will get nothing through arbitration.
What buisness(es) do you own Hartguy?
Sorry teacher folks.
A little history lesson for y’all.
There was an election, the last one that is in bc.
We elected a government that wasn’t going to pander to public sector unions and hand out big raises.
That being said, how can you teachers be surprised that the public dislikes you and doesn’t support your greed?
lildigger
Staying in BC while teachers make $19,000 more per year in Alberta is not greedy
Giving up thousands of dollars on a picket line while we try to improve learning conditions is not greedy
Paying for classroom materials out of our own pockets is not greedy
karrman, check out Jim Iker on tonight’s Global Newscast! What a desperate man he has become! Anybody with half a brain knew full well that today’s actions by the BCTF was nothing more than a desperate publicity stunt! What a waste of time!
As far as Garossino, she has her opinion, you have yours and I have mine. The same applies to our priorities!
You go ahead and exercise your democratic right to stand up for the teachers. I’ll keep standing up for my democratic right to protect the taxpayers wallets from excessive public sector demands. If the teachers are unhappy, they have the democratic right to quit their jobs and do something else or even move to Alberta where the pay is better but the benefits might not be!
Enjoy sitting by the side of the road like idiots.
^^
Solutions,
1.move to Alberta and teach
Enjoy the tar sands stench
2. Get back to work and negotiate rather than strike
3. Nobody buys the bs that teachers spend any significant amount of money on classroom supplies on a regular basis save a few rare exceptions
Smooth, if you and your wife think the grass is greener in Alberta, you should go there!
There is NO teacher shortage in BC! I’m sure that someone in short order will step up to the plate to replace the both of you!
I hear that Wetaskiwin is nice! Be sure to send us a post card!
I was using that as an example to show teachers are not greedy. If we were greedy, we would go.
Meanwhile we have a government afraid of teachers getting a fair contract, all the while saying our demands are unreasonable. Arbitration would hammer teachers if our demands were truly unreasonable. We both know there is no truth in government though.
Hartguy,
I noticed you never responded to my corporate taxes post. You cherry picked the Alberta thing. Care to respond on the rest.
Smooth, I don’t have a problem with low corporate taxes. Higher profits usually result in bigger dividends and higher share prices! My investment portfolio grows accordingly, even after I pay taxes on my dividends and gains!
I’m sure that your pension plan invests in many of the same companies as I do! Funny how we both benefit from lower corporate taxes, eh??
Lildigger, I gotta call you on your 3rd point. My wife’s daughter is a teacher & yes she & her fellow teachers do spend quite a bit on getting supplies for their classes.
Smooth, the Liberals (& us) were burned by good old Glen Clark when he agreed to binding arbitration for doctors. Thanks to the NDP we were on the hook for almost 1/2 a billion. That is why they are wary of binding arbitration.
and Smooth, you ask what business I own? I’ll give you hint! I often work 7 days a week, I’ve been known to work in the middle of the night, I will even occasionally work on Stat Holidays!
As a self-employed person, I work whenever and wherever work is available, as I never know when or where the next work might be!
P.S. – I really really REALLY appreciate the Oil and Gas Industry!
G’nite!!
2 Separate points in this post instead of separating them.
If the government won’t accept arbitration because of the doctors example and that a 3rd party could control how government money is spent, then are people willing to concede that the teachers proposals are not actually unreasonable?
Hartguy,
You do not have to invest in corporations setup solely in BC and people in other provinces can invest anywhere as well. People in other provinces are lining their portfolio with BC companies and taking our money with them. BC should help BC’ers by making sure a greater share of that money stays in BC. Raise the corporate tax rate by 1% and stay below the Canadian average. Then we will see massive improvements to services in BC. Under your proposed reason for keeping corporate taxes low, BC is subsidizing investors from all over the world.
Hartguy, please tell me you’re not a consultant.
Listen to what she says in the first half of the interview NoWay, karrman, et al. It is exactly what BCPSEA writes in their June 15th package of proposals.

Smooth is now a tax specialist… or is this more union propaganda? your last attempt at doing taxes was a bit off kilter with half your 5,000 signing bonus going to the taxman. A trip to H&R Block may save you a bundle, don’t do your own taxes.
Since this is pick on Smooth day… what picket line you talking about??? If there is any, it’s sporadic and short lived. Never see anyone after two..AND they want the Public;s support??? I got a word for them and starts with the letter L…
So in 2011 this government spent 560 million to fix bc places roof.. But now doesn’t have the 400 million to get the teachers back to work.. Who is setting this whacked out priorities ?
Iker has boxed himself into a corner after initially thinking the Libs would cave and as a result of that misconception he authorized the binding arbitration vote. He has to save face of some sort so the standoff continues.
If the original offer put on the table last June by the Libs with the $1200.00 signing bonus was put to a vote today it would pass in a heart beat.
I am certainly not a liberal fan as they are to business prone and stick it to the working man or woman at every opportunity as they did with HST. Even after the HST was rescinded they still played into the hands of car dealers by hitting private auto sales with 12% tax rather than 7% as was the case before the HST was put in place.
Unfortunately the Libs were re-elected and we now live with the outcome of the election.
I don’t think the original offer would be accepted at all. The liberals are spin doctoring it every chance they get.. They always start saying it wages first in any statement. But the teachers want a %1.6 increase. Gov is offering them %1.1. Clark’s aids got %7.6. Machinists and steelworkers got %2.3. What happened to what one union gets so does the other we keep hearing from this government ?
Buzzinga, you commented that we are paying principals a 100k or more for doing nothing (!) and we should take 10$ off their pay! It doesn’t make sense! If they do nothing (I believe they work at the job they have) shouldn’t they get paid nothing? If I could find a job where I do nothing and get paid 100% (or 90%) without anybody objecting I would love to have it and keep it – doing nothing forever!
P Val: “What happened to what one union gets so does the other we keep hearing from this government ?”
For about the third time P Val, wages AND benefits, pensions, etc. must be considered in the cost of the settlement. Not sure why that is so hard to understand.
If the government truly believes they’re doing the right thing, then binding arbitration shouldn’t be a worry. This just shows they know they’re in the wrong.
Johnnybelt. Then why doesn’t the government lay out what the other unions got and the math to show each union got the exact same… Ya know why dude..cuz it ain’t be so..da government is lying..again Why is that so hard for you to comprehend .????
P Val: “Johnnybelt. Then why doesn’t the government lay out what the other unions got and the math to show each union got the exact same”
The cost of public sector settlements is known, P Val. But I guess it’s just easier to accuse someone of lying without having the facts to back it up.
Yes, you have that down pat JB
I worked in a union for many years. I was extremely happy to receive three days for bereavement leave and if I needed more I took holidays or time off without pay. I never received a signing bonus…that was fine with me. I was in support for the teachers until July lst, when the pickets went down and summer holidays began. If this dispute is really about the children, then may I suggest the teachers return to work and let Mr. Inker and the duly elected government hammer out a deal. Last time I looked in my backyard, there was not a pot of gold that I could use to pay for all the very outrageous demands the teachers are asking for. They love to bring up the court decision. If the teachers had lost, they would be knee deep in appealing too. We can’t pay what we can’t afford. I’ do not agree with your $5,000.00 signing bonus, two months bereavement leave and long maternity leave. It was stated to me that these demands are now off the table. Prove that please and give the taxpayers of this province a copy of all your demands. Who do you think will be paying for everything you want? I do agree with class sizes and teacher’s aides for the children that need extra help. In my opinion your wages and benefits should be in line along with all the other public service unions. If you truly want us to believe it is all about the children and their future, please return to work and educate them. I love children and they deserve a good education which will provide a good career for them…BUT I don’t want them to have to pay for all that you want for many years….Thank you for listening…..

A few people here are definitly signed up..right JB, hart guy, lildigger…..
I wish I got paid for posting. Who’s paying you for being a leftist shill, P Val?
The teachers of course, they are paying me by teaching all of our children ( when they are not being bullied by this government ) they work for free at home, marking papers preparing for the next day, on occasion purchasing supplies with their own money. Etc. which I appreciate.
What has the government done.. Raised medical cost. Increased wait times, lowered the standard for hip and knee replacement unless you can afford to buy the better ones. Increased medical for retired on fixed income. Increased. ICBC rates, cut back on all social programs .. Giving billions of tax breaks to big business.. Huge bonuses to hydro ICBC top management etc etc…
Hey P Val, you should read Neil Godbout’s editorial in the Citizen today. It talks about how government and the public sector has exploded in the past 30 years, while industry, innovation, and small business has remained stagnant, while being bogged down in loads of bureaucracy and red tape.
You want to know where all the money went? Look no further.
I did.. Feel asleep halfway through, no new news there, just like the usual edition of the citizen, the exact reason I stopped getting that paper 15 yrs ago
So to summarize, like most lefties, you believe in the magical money tree. Talking about where the money comes from makes you fall asleep. This is all making sense.
Keep posting those links to the Liberal party website, P Val. That’s more your speed.
