Prince George, B.C. – A pair of interpretive signs were unveiled at the base of Mr. PG this morning.

The event was held in preparation for the City’s centennial next year and was hosted by the Prince George Heritage Commission and members of Prince George City Council.

Heritage Commission Chair Jeff Elder says the two signs, one in French and another in English, will help to highlight the sign’s history for tourists, including those attending next year’s Canada Winter Games.

“A lot of tourists stop and have their picture taken with Mr. PG. He’s very well known at the intersection of the highway’s and we felt some historical information would be valuable.”

The signs reveal several historical facts about Mr. PG, including how the idea for it goes back to the 1950’s when Mayor Harold Moffat believed the City needed a mascot to promote the forest industry and to represent the City.

The signs also convey how Mr. PG was featured in the 1963 Grey Cup Parade in Vancouver and how the first Mr. PG was just one and a half metres tall and stood outside the former Simon Fraser Hotel (Days Inn) on Quebec Street.

Yes and he was made out of real wood!

I think it’s a real shame that there is only one picnic table there. It would be very nice to see a number of picnic tables, and benches. RV’s could use the entire parking lot by golf course and roll a dome to park, or turn around. Make this corner a show piece. I’m sure the city could find a few $$ lying around to put up tables and a few more flowers – after all they just let 9-11 people go from city hall.

Oh Yeah? His head is a septic tank. How ironic for a city’s cultural icon.

Good ideas newstome

The real mr pg was not made of wood but steel and he is in the basement of the museum.

museum.? were is that?

Fort George Park… Exploration Place.

You call that a museum? Thought that was a daycare.

Ha ha! You bit on that eagleone? So silly of you.

The real, original Mr. P.G. was made of wood.
