2015 Games Needs More Rooms for Families

Monday, October 6, 2014 @ 6:39 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The 2015 Canada Winter Games has selected a medal design, but is  keeping the details of the design secret for now.

In a report to Prince George Council, the Games Society also announced there  is an accommodation shortage in the City.  This is not a surprise,  and  the 2015 Games Society has made arrangements to offer home stay and billeting  as well as  hotel/bus packages  to  bring people in  from Quesnel and Vanderhoof.

There is still a need for folks in Prince George to open up their homes for homestay or billeting and  more information is available  at the Canada Winter Games website.

There is good financial news as well.

The funds needed for the Games are now 97.9% of total goal, with just under a million left to collect.  Ticket sales and merchandise sales are just a few weeks underway so there  is confidence the financial goals will be met if not surpassed.

CEO Stuart Ballantyne says he is confident of reaching the Proposed $7 million dollars  in private sector funding within the next few weeks. He says  there are still opportunities to collect  nearly $1.4 million  for the Games.

19 of 22 test events have been completed for the Games, and those events are expected to have contributed a few million dollars into the local economy.

The opening ceremonies will be held at the CN Centre, closing ceremonies at UNBC, and each night will be capped off with fireworks.

What if there is no snow? What is plan ‘B’ for events at Tabor?

If they can’t ski at Tabor, there’s always the cutbanks.

Its the Hotel, Restaurant, and Booze and Entertainment industry that makes money on these games. The rest of us just get an opportunity to pay for them.

I am sure that the owners of the business’s that make the money will open up their homes to anyone who needs accommodation and this problem will be solved very quickly.

These games have been pitched to us as a good thing for pg, how good? Our taxes have been increased, the snow removal decreased, city taxes skyrocketing, fees increasing. So what are us tax payers getting drom the games except higher everything?

Considered renting out my spare room but I work shifts and value my sleep too much.

Same old 250 folks singing the same old 250 tune….”The sky is falling, the sky is falling!”. Sad world you all live in.

Go PG! Can’t wait for the Games and the positive exposure they bring to our community. We can sure use it!

realitycheck. You need a reality check. This constant Rah, Rah, Rah, is based more on what you would like so see, as opposed to what is actually going to happen.

The positive exposure that these games will bring to Prince George is the same exposure that was brought to White Horse Yukon, and Grande Prairie AB. when they held the games. Hmmmmm. Never did run across anyone in this town that actually attended the games in these towns, nor did I hear anything about the positive exposure after the games.

Could the benefits from the games be nothing more than a myth. If not give us some examples so that we can see the benefits develop in the coming years.

There are actual studies that show that the hotel, restaurant, and booze industry make money on these types of ventures, while the retail industry loses money. Hmmmmm. Who actually benefits.

Let’s see..

-20+ test events ALREADY involving thousands (yes thousands) of athletes, officials and families. Most of whom stayed, shopped and spent money in our city.
-Massive upgrades to local facilities, much performed by local companies employing local workers, trades, etc…
– The ability to host bigger and better events as a result of having these facilities leading to more events being held here, resulting in increased $$ flowing through our local economy.
– More and better facilities, coaches and trained volunteers who will encourage our youth (and all ages) to participate in sport and recreation leading to a healthier community, reducing our health care (And other related) costs
– positive exposure for our community via TSN and other national media leading to more people and companies perhaps considering locating here at some point.
– 2500+ athletes, coaches, volunteers, and officials from across Canada coming to see what PG is all about and what it has to offer.

and I could go on and on…..

For every study you show me that supports your point of view I can find one (or more) that contradicts it.

In case you haven’t clued in yet the Games are coming to PG…..we can sit back and whine about what we THINK they are not going to do for us or we can work our hardest to maximize what they CAN do for us. You’ve chosen your side and it’s that point of view that will keep PG from moving forward.

I find your stance sad as PG has tremendous potential and all it needs is people to step up and grab hold.

Well put reality check.

There is such a small group of constant commentators on this site that hold a negative view of just about everything that the majority of citizens don’t even bother to write in. That, of course, leaves the impression that these views are representative of the general population. For example, the games are nothing but a cost to the taxpayer, 100% of what comes out of City Hall is garbage and, dare I say it?, no one wants a Performing Arts Centre. I’m very glad that none of these are a true reflection of PG citizens.

Thanks for adding a different perspective.

Rah, Rah, Rah, Most of the facilities that were built or expanded were paid for by tax dollars.

As is expected no comments on what is called **displacement** that is, when the 2500 athletes, coaches, come to Prince George they displace those people from Vanderhoof, Ft St James, MacKenzie, Burns Lake, etc; etc; etc; who would normally shop here during those weeks, but now because all facilities are booked they cannot. This is a loss of revenue, that at best is replaced by the athletes, however studies have shown that the retail industry loses big time in these types of events.

Also note that no comments were made about the exposure for White Horse, Yukon, and Grande Prairie Ab., is this because people like realitycheck probably did not know the games were held in these communities, or does he know deep down inside the exposure made no difference whatsoever to these communities, and in fact within a couple of week of the games being over people begin to forget they even existed. At that point the **new** Winter Games Host City begins its propaganda campaign.

Its one thing to call people who disagree with you **negative** and its another thing to keep beating a dead horse with the constant Rah, Rah, Rah, that cannot be substantiated. Much like all the Cargo Jets landing at the Prince George Airport.

realitycheck
i think you need a realitycheck
I seen nothing here that says anything out of the ordinary that all other news providers haven’t been saying…so what is with the slam against 250?
the Games Society announced there is an accommodation shortage in the City, not Opinion 250, hey just reported it…..

I will say though that the people who suggested PG for the winter games should have given this more thought from the onset and they havent’…now the scramble.

I am neither for or against the games,(as long as they pay for tehmselves) but I will be glad when they are over…the hoopla is getting a little thin.

I agree BC Racer, enough hoopla.

@ realitycheck – lets just have a look here. ….

‘-20+ test events ALREADY involving thousands (yes thousands) of athletes, officials and families. Most of whom stayed, shopped and spent money in our city. ‘

Link to such large expenditures made by these visiting ‘thousands’ of athletes? Thought so.

‘-Massive upgrades to local facilities, much performed by local companies employing local workers, trades, etc… ‘

More BS. Kin 1 was not built by a local company. 2 of the bids for a Kin 4 were from local companies, both bids would have been cheaper than a new Kin 1. Both bids were less than 20 million, could have spent the rest on renovating Kin 1, new change-rooms…

‘- The ability to host bigger and better events as a result of having these facilities leading to more events being held here, resulting in increased $$ flowing through our local economy. ‘

More BS. CN Center already has Olympic ice capabilities, it has never been in demand. NEVER. Olympic Ice has zero demand, anywhere in BC.

‘- More and better facilities, coaches and trained volunteers who will encourage our youth (and all ages) to participate in sport and recreation leading to a healthier community, reducing our health care (And other related) costs ‘

Yawn. We have a new Kin 1, hockey enrollment is down, and most divisions are short coaches by 40%. Any other awesome facts you can spit out? Are you gobbling down the koolaid they are selling you, daily? What facilities do you believe we got out of this entire ordeal?

‘- positive exposure for our community via TSN and other national media leading to more people and companies perhaps considering locating here at some point. ‘

Where was the last winter games? Thought so, you had no idea and neither did I. If you think some blurb on TSN is going to bring in the people, you are as crazy as the rest of them. You know what brings people to a community? Jobs and quality of living.

‘- 2500+ athletes, coaches, volunteers, and officials from across Canada coming to see what PG is all about and what it has to offer. ‘

That many people come to Prince George for the Exhibition. Its the surrounding areas that keep PG going, from Vanderhoof to FT St James, to Smithers… to Quesnel… not a bunch of bumbling athletes and their parents.

‘and I could go on and on….. ‘

I wish you would, you are making my day.

For every study you show me that supports your point of view I can find one (or more) that contradicts it.

You haven’t proved anything but some ‘hypothetical spending scenario’ you have made up about the athletes.

‘In case you haven’t clued in yet the Games are coming to PG…..we can sit back and whine about what we THINK they are not going to do for us or we can work our hardest to maximize what they CAN do for us. You’ve chosen your side and it’s that point of view that will keep PG from moving forward. ‘

Great, now you are stealing quotes from JFK to get your point across. Will you be reciting MLK soon as well?

‘I find your stance sad as PG has tremendous potential and all it needs is people to step up and grab hold.’

Sure, should we bend over as well?
