Friday Free for All – Oct. 10, 2014

Thursday, October 9, 2014 @ 11:59 PM

Another week is coming to a close.  At 4 today, the picture will become clear on who is seeking  election for a position  within municipal, regional  or  school district.

This is your opportunity to speak up on the issues that matter to you.  It is time for the FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL.

You pick the topic, but please,  obey the rules:

Keep it clean

Keep it legal

No bullying!

What’s with all these deaths within city limits this week..

whats with cn lately, stopping the train 2 car lengths short of being clear of the road, then sitting with no movement for up to 30 minutes. I wonder if they will pull this stunt with the upcoming winter games just days away. hey rustad whatever happened to those overpasses out here in miworth you were talking about years ago, just another fleeting thought??? anyways enjoy your turkey this weekend, you too hartguy and make sure that you burp JB!

THE turkey always starts out lookin like a condor and by the end of the night it looks like a budgie.

AM by ice….you cooking or drinking……lol….or both….lol

AM by ice…..the conductor had to personally man that crossing and he needs to hold cars there for his mile long walk up to the head of the train. It probably takes him 30 min. The winter games has nothing to do with cn’s movement of trains.

Have a safe long weekend everyone :-)

Cops should patrol the Hart more and ticket the poky ass drivers who drive 60km and under in the left lane. Jerks!

Yes indeed, enjoy these beautiful days to the hilt! Nice to hear nice light conversation on this board this morning! Hoping a good weekend to all.

3 pedestrian deaths in one week.. Appalling. My heart goes out to the families and friends of these people, and those who had to witness/investigate and respond to these tragic incidents. May their deaths not be in vain, and this brings to light in public discussions/political stages the substandard condition of public safety. Streets and highways all suffer from inadequate pedestrian crossings, some should be made into under/overpasses. Signage for crossings should stand out much better than a simple white/black sign. We can throw money into questionable upgrades/projects around the city and province, so then we should have no qualms about upgrading pedestrian used walkways/crossings and keeping them usable.
Please have a safe, happy Thanksgiving. Make these incidents a reason to point out the importance of safety on the roads to your children and loved one’s. Dont let this issue slip to the wayside. Everyd

P.S… TGIF!!!

———-

Why not ticket those left lane hogs who aren’t passing regardless of their speed? “Keep Right Except To Pass” is pretty straight forward. If you’re unable to keep up with the flow of traffic move to the right lane.

I’d also like to see them hand out tickets to the inordinate number of idiots out there who haven’t figured out where their vehicle’s light switch is.

Stillsmokin

What’s with all these deaths within city limits this week..

Think the city should look into making the city bicycle and pedestrian friendly?

Yes everyone should move over to the right lane so the idiots can race up to the next vehicle and sit on their bumper until they get out of way because we all know the road is bought and paid for by these morons.
Well as far as I am aware the fuel tax we pay covers both lanes.
This is the “Me” generation where it is all about me.

I actually think it is quite comical to watch these idiots blast up to the car in front, sit on their butt, get frustrated and then try and race around on the other side and get up to the next car and do the same thing.

It is a gong show out there. You could be doing 20 over the limit and this still happens. Well good on ya , Keep it up. Your providing me with free entertainment watching this gong show.

Just wondering if someone could get Mike,Shirley and John together at Polley mines for a photo op and give us an update how the cleanup is going.

———

Yes, I am. Even a link to the City of PG website was deleted. 250News needs to hire a competent webmaster. It’s a wordpress blog for pete’s sake! Canned software doesn’t get any easier.

Has anyone else noticed how beautiful the sky is this morning? It is pink and blue and looks like cotton candy :)

I wonder if part of the problem is that they don’t want to send readers off to other websites for fear some of them might be less likely to come back to 250 News in the future.

Garth Turner has a fairly successful real estate blog with most of his posts getting an average of 200 or so comments on them. I do not recall him ever not publishing one of my comments on his website.

Prince George Citizen of the year nominee Brent Marshall needs to do the right thing and withdraw his nomination… Being a citizen of the year nominee should be given to deserving individual and not one that has violated industry regulations by using misleading and deceptive sales practices…

Here’s another reason we shouldn’t be putting up with Enbridge.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/enbridge-line-9b-pipeline-delayed-by-neb-over-major-water-body-concerns-1.2794494

I can’t believe the audacity of this company.

Oh and maverick 1965, I had a fellow with a bicycle attempt to cross in a cross walk, right in front of me at a major intersection last night, after traffic was moving on a green light.

I certainly don’t know what he was thinking. It appeared that he was watching the lights too.
No wonder pedestrians are getting hit.

Wake up city of Prince George, no on street parking in the winter months until 7:00 am, there are many people in this city that begin work before this time.

I wonder why the local media is not reporting on the Brent Marshall story? Is he getting a free pass because he was such a philanthropist in the community?

nThe only article I seen of Marshal was in the Free Press.

Sure, slow poke drivers in the left hand lane should be ticketed, but those who think they can mercilessly tailgate (within 5 or 6 feet) those who drive in the right hand lane at or a bit above the speed limit – should be given a ticket plus 3 points for dangerous driving!

I haven’t had any problem putting links into comments, which makes me think that there isn’t a technical problem.

“Here is a remedy, Not to be rude or anything….but here goes….send about 10 infected people with ebola into the area and just sit back and wait.”

Military intervention will result primarily in casualties for the bad guys. Germs do not distinguish one side from the other or combatants from non-combatants. That’s why using them is a war crime.

Try it and see how long it stays.

JB, the philantrophy is part of the reason but I think the big reason is the advertising dollars the media desperately needs, that Marshalls’ business’ spend not to mention the ad dollars he spends telling everyone what a ‘great guy’ he is.

Charles you are comparing a national big city opinion blog with a small town opinion blog.

How is it that some people notice the “keep right except to pass” and the “slower traffic keep right” signs but don’t notice the maximum speed limit signs? ☻

Think about it: When driving the speed limit in the left lane you only have to yield to emergency vehicles. A tailgater is a bully and you should make a stand against bullying, so they say. Also, when you pull over for a speeding tailgater – don’t you abet in wrongdoing?

——

There’s absolutely no harm in going 15 kmh over the posted limited so long as the conditions are favourable and the traffic is flowing at that rate.

Why is it that some people putter along in the left lane while people continually pass them on the right? At what point do they clue in that they’re in the wrong lane? Are their lives really so pathetic that extending a common courtesy is too much to do?

Traffic would flow a lot smoother if people would drop the “me, me, me” attitude and “Keep Right Except To Pass”.

Well we now have a large number of people running for Council, so we will have to try and work our way through and separate the wheat from the chaff.

Hopefully we will get a good Mayor and Council, who will ensure that the City administration is reigned in, and that we can have four years of relative stability at City Hall. Some **Hot Shot** Managers should probably move on to greener pastures. Some older Councilors should do the same.

Time to turn the page, and get concerned about all the citizens of Prince George, and not just the **vested interests**.

———-

Nonsense. I suggest you turn in your license since you apparently don’t understand the rules and regulations that govern it. Do you think all those “Keep Right Expect To Pass” signs are there as suggestions only?

Traffic would flow a lot smoother if people would abide to and know the
traffic laws.

“Also, when you pull over for a speeding tailgater – don’t you abet in wrongdoing?”
Wouldn’t the reason for pulling over be to get yourself out of a potentially dangerous situation? To avoid potentially being rear ended? Once you are behind him/her, you have solved two issues created by someone else 1. the tailgating itself & 2. avoiding potential frustration on their part thus defusing what could lead to road rage.

(Then you could get up behind them and P.I.T. them into the ditch)

Morning everyone. Nice sunny day in Abby this morning.
The sun is shining and the birds are singing. Looking foreword to Thanksgiving Got a nice bird and with the mushroom truffle’s it should be a n enjoyable diner.

Hope you guys in PG all got your snow tires on your vehicle and “Keep Right to Pass”.

You guys in PG have am great Thanksgiving,
Cheers

Ice, if you’re talking about Miworth crossing it’s because there isn’t room in the rail yard and they’re being held out until the yard can take them, or they don’t have the signal permitting them to advance further. The crew is holding back clear of the crossing instead of pulling right up and blocking it for 30 minutes. But if you prefer it gets blocked instead, I’m sure the crew would be happy to be that much closer to home.

Axman: “There’s absolutely no harm in going 15 km/hr over the posted (speed) …” Well, Axman, tell that to the judge when you contest your speeding ticket. Also, drivers do not putter when they drive the posted speed limit. Reading your comments I get the feeling you harbor some penned feelings of entitlement that could erupt into road rage.

Sigh. You’re not going to get a speeding ticket if the majority of the traffic is doing the same speed, regardless of whether or not they’re exceeding the posted maximum.

If you’re too much of a selfish curmudgeon to play nice with the majority of the drivers on the road, please turn in your license and start taking the bus.

Vestedinterest: I like your sense of humour. Yup, let the tailgaiters pass and then perform the PIT manoeuver on them. Problem solved and lesson taught.

Huh?

“Do you think all those “Keep Right Expect To Pass” signs are there as suggestions only?”

Do you think all those “Maximum Posted Speed” signs are there as suggestions only?

Road signs display only the “KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS”, so what is your Problem, ARE you A WANNA BE COP every day? The left Lane is not a slow lane to block traffic. Your Little **** syndrome is stressing out other Drivers, get out of the way.

When I took my safe driving course, the instructor made sure that I was aware that the margin for error is 10%. Ten percent.
Not 10 Km/H.
If you are in a 90 Km/h zone, it is accepted to go up to 90 plus 9 = 99 Km/H.

If one is in a 60 Km/H zone, then is is only 60 plus 10% (6 Km/H) = 66 Km/H

It is funny how some complain about the excessive speeder, yet in the next breath complain about those enjoying the scenery.

Just wait. I have been hearing about self piloting vehicles and how after there are enough market insertion, it will be illegal to operate your vehcle manually.

Have a nice day.

Hows the manure stink in Abby these days? Made my eyes water the last time I was there. This one of those rare days you can see the mountains? Going to check over my snowmobile this weekend, snow baby snow. Was out the door five minutes late this morning and missed the rushminute.

Those of you who see no wrong in holding up left lane traffic would you do basically the same walking on a sidewalk? I doubt it because in a car you feel chickenpoop safe, whereas doing that on a sidewalk you have no protection and could get a fist in the side of the head.

editor’s note:

All you have to do is take a drive out west a see all the crosses on the side of the road. This is NOT a technical stretch of hyway yet the carnage is unbelievable. It doesn’t matter if you are doing 110k some turkey will be on your butt trying to push you up the road. Keep right except to pass is on on the open he way where there is a passing lane but it don’t work in town. If you do 20 over the posted speed in the left lane you will still get some jerk on you bumper.
These are the same turkeys that like to crowd you out at the end of a two lane.

Got news for you. Your 3000 lb car is not going to move my 140,000 lb truck. But go ahead. Give it a shot.

Axman: Don’t change the subject. We exposed you as a bullying tailgater not as an individual that conforms to the flow of traffic. Your notion that “You’re not going to get a speeding ticket if the majority of the traffic is doing the same speed, regardless of whether or not they’re exceeding the posted maximum.” is nonsense. Jurisdictions may turn a blind eye to “speeding in the flow of traffic” but may also pull speeders over at random and ticket them.
Your posts would have more credibility if you would refrain from name calling. I am done, no more rebuttals. Oh, just would like to know what’s with the “Sigh”?

As you can see by some of the comments here.. A few people think speeding is fine..and they seem to think the ones following the speed limit POSTED that are the bad drivers.

There are reasons there is a speed limit posted..its take into consideration of the type of road, location. etc. Its not a guess.. The drivers who think they are the best are usually the worst.

Going 15kmh over the speed limit is called breaking the law and is asking for a ticket.. but why do I think the ones driving at this speed would give the cop a hard time for inforcing the law.. can almost hear it now..” yeah sure, give me a fine for speeding.. why arent you out catching the drug dealers.. etc” same song and dance.

The link I put in my comment on this story two days ago is still there. If there’s a problem, I don’t think it’s a problem with the software removing links.

It’s true that there is usually a good reason for the posted speed limit. It is also true that large differences in speed among the vehicles on the road is dangerous and that impeding other vehicles, even if you are going the speed limit, creates a dangerous situation. That’s why some highways have minimum speeds as well as maximums, and it is one reason for “keep right except to pass” requirements. In California the law is that if five vehicles accumulate behind you, you are required, as long as you can safely do so, to pull over and let them pass, even if you are going the speed limit. The idea is that tailgating is inherently dangerous and that frustrated drivers may attempt to pass when they shouldn’t or engage in other dangerous behaviour.

Google “the effects of raising and lowering speed limits” and you will find many studies that show that traffic will move at a reasonable speed set by risk regardless of what the “speed limit” is set at. The lower the speed limit the lower the compliance and the higher the speed limit the greater the compliance but the accident rates don’t change. in other words, the old cliché of “raise the speed limit and the speeders will just go even faster” is hogwash. People drive at a speed they are comfortable at. If you are comfortable at the speed limit then congratulations – now get in the right lane and get out of the way. Quit causing impatience and aggression – those are real accident causes.

Case law would agree with me and say, ‘yes’.

What is the real reason people refuse to move over? Stupidity? Stubbornness? Entitlement? Small Man Syndrome? Nagging Husband?

Posted on Friday, October 10, 2014 @ 10:35 AM by time out

All you have to do is take a drive out west a see all the crosses on the side of the road.

———

That’s a completely different issue.

I see Ms. Green is already out there trying to drum up support for her bid to become the Conservative MP (story in the PG Citizen about her giving up her CWG torch bearer to a young girl. Don’t know why she was picked in the first place as she won’t be mayor during the games). People need to get out and join the Conservative party here in PG just to make sure she doesn’t get in. Do we really want her to represent us at the federal level when she didn’t/doesn’t do a good job as a mayor?

The issue with both the maximum speed limit and the stay right except to pass discussions is the lack of enforcement. Travel 10% or 10 mph or 10kph over the speed limit in Washington state and you will most likely have a speeding ticket within 30 minutes. Quite humorous to see 3 out 4 drivers pulled over for speeding between Blaine and Seattle have BC plates. Most traffic (other than the truckers) stick at the posted limit. The truckers have a lower limit but typically travel at the general posted rate. However, both the trucks and the slower traffic stick to the right lane like glue. Why? Simple old fashioned enforcement. Put the officers on the road with their ticket books in hand and let the RCMP recover the additional cost.

Slow down, stick to the right and enjoy Thanksgiving.

Editor….why do my comments disappear before I finish typing?

I was just in Washington state where the state troopers enforce the keep right except to pass rule quite stringently. It was interesting to see how well traffic flowed as people passed and moved over on a continuous basis. On occasion I ran into a left lane hog, and guess what… almost without exception they had BC Plates.
Anybody who hogs the left lane just to prove a point, or in their self entitled smugness thinks that they and only they can enforce the speed limits needs to give their head a shake! All you are doing is piling up a whole bunch of angry frustrated drivers behind you.
One other point I would make is that using the accepted 10% variance that police will allow yields 7 KPH faster in a 70 K zone. So on the hart if you want to do the speed limit in the right lane, people will pass you quite easily in the left lane at only 7K over. This allows traffic to flow properly, and no one gets angry and frustrated.
As Axman keeps saying Keep right except to pass…oh and one other thing…its time people figured out what the thing sticking out of the left side of the steering column is used for!

We came home from Chilliwack and drove through the farms in the valley and all one can smell the the new mown fodder that is been cut.
So seamut get out of PG your losing it and enjoy the fragrance of the Fraser Valley

Dragonmaster’s not one to resort to ‘offensive’ comments so it probably is a time out issue.

I shall conduct an experiment!

It’s discrimination against one finger typists I tell you.

Good lord. Why does free for all friday always end up about people bitching about driving?

Chilliwack is home to the sweet smell of bovine fertilizer, Abbotsford is normally scent free.

Glad to see Mr.Marshall step aside from citizen of the year and hopefully the truth will come out along with the ruling against him and Northland from Motor Dealer council dated Jan.4,2006

With respect to Mr. Marshall, what is the truth as you see it, tdiguy? He was found guilty by the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of engaging in deceptive acts.

Starting typing now and letting it sit while stopwatch runs….

I dunno. 11 minutes and still open.

15 and a half now.

21 minutes later and still open.

27 and a half now.

30 minutes later and still open.

I just noticed that the JJ Springer building is empty and there is a for sale or lease sign up.

This is the store operated by Her worship Green.

What could that mean?

It’s not one finger typing that slows you down, it is the one handed typing activity that is slowest.
See last episode of brickleberry for reference.

Loki: “I just noticed that the JJ Springer building is empty and there is a for sale or lease sign up.

It could mean there’s a limited market for high priced knick knacks in PG.

Editor’s note:
The owner of the business, Mayor Green’s sister, has closed the business to pursue other opportunities.

JJ Springer closing is old news.

Speaking of 4th Avenue, -I know, again with the traffic!- I drove it for the first time after the upgrade and all I can say is thank dog for 1st Ave! No need to go through downtown to get to Queensway even though that used to be my chosen route. Stops signs every block? Good grief! Traffic is meant to flow!

Congratulations billposer. I see your 10:58 AM post which had a link in it got published. For some reason the post I made which had a link in it at 1:47 AM (12 hours ago) has not been published yet.

As you know the posts with links in them show up if you are logged into the website. I checked the post which I made at 1:47 AM, the post looks good and the link in it works fine.

It means she went out of business. its that simple. High taxes .lol.

Gotta hate how local business floods Kijiji with their things for sale. There should be a business only section for these people.

Reading the Citizen this morning about the article on the 11 yr old child. A shame our judicial system does nothing regarding these people who put minors behind the wheel on purpose. I’ve heard of other similar incidents and the people were let off scott free. Condolences to that family.

Maverick…I do not know the circumstances of the accidents so didn’t comment on it.But the fact it happens is of concern. Condolences to the families and the drivers for regardless who is at fault, both will have to live with it forever and that certainly can’t be easy

You are right “only2c” – there is way too much complaining about driving on this post every Friday. Perhaps the editors should create another weekly “Free for All” just for the road ragers.

The way some of you guys talk you would think PG actually has traffic to worry about. I’d bet $500 that if you lived in a city that actually had traffic (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, etc.) within a year you’d either end up shot or you you’d shoot someone yourself. Relax, it’s just PG “traffic”, LOL . . .

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Another thing that bugs me about left lane drivers is they don’t have any consideration about the other driver trying to make a left turn from a side road onto the hiway. It’s hard enough waiting for a clear chance to cross the two lanes of traffic coming at you, but now you have to wait for the idiots in the left lane going the other way to pass so you can merge into that left lane. I hope that makes some sense.

Before moving to PG I had a 3 hour a day commute from my home in the burbs to Downtown Vancouver. It got to the point where I started leaving at 5:00 am just to beat the traffic but even then it was still an hour in to town. It didn’t matter what time I left to head home though, rush hour seemed to start at noon.

Never shot anybody. :)

Tone down on the perfume/cologne people! I had a lady behind me at Costco with so much on my eyes were watering and I started sneezing. Only now is the headache gone. If you can smell yourself, it’s too much!!

I could care less about who drives in the left lane or not. I do take exception with those that risk my life and the lives of others with stupid moves out on the hwy. Too many dangerous drivers out there risking others lives because they just gotta pass that heavy truck no matter what. Hills, curves, double solid lines, oncoming traffic, it matters not to these morons. It’s time our tax police started getting these dangerous drivers off our hwy’s. While driving at night please dim your brights before coming over the hill and blinding other drivers. Why do you think it’s OK to wait to dim your lights until after you blind the other driver. It’s very plain to see another vehicle about to appear before you from the glow on the horizon or reflection on the power lines etc. I live by the late/early rule. You dim yours late I turn on my brights early. Then there are those that like to pull out onto the hwy in front of heavy trucks and not get up to speed. Are you blind? People need to start using that grey mush between their ears.

So Moderator, why are the comments in the article relating to Brent Marshall closed?

    Editor:
because the matter of the MVSA isn’t yet resolved as penalties have yet to be determined and that process needs to be fair.

Retired I think your nose is out of wack.

WHAT”S UP with Krohler’s BIG billboard right along side the white line halfway up Peden Hill ???? Are they resorting to putting up signs on highways now to grab people’s attention??? I see this afternoon it blew over… Smart team that put it up..

peegee, she musta just come from Walmart, the free testing…LOL

axman, they now the difference between merge and yield in the LMD, not so much up here.
Dragonmaster, my thoughts as well.

Dragonmaster
Are you saying that you turn on your brights as you approach an oncoming vehicle leaving them with possible temporary blindness just because they did not dim their lights soon enough in your opinion? If this is the case you must have a vacuum between your ears with a complete absence of gray matter. Might want to check what the law says when it is proper to dim for oncoming traffic no mention of hills or reflection off power lines but it is the distance that is the determining factor.

If this is an example of what you do when behind the wheel you have no right to comment on what others do on roads and highways as blinding other drivers would clearly place you dead center in the moron camp you love to talk about.

If Koehler had retained the services of an engineer then maybe his reelection signs would have been built and erected in such a way to stand up to outdoor conditions. Wait I think he is an engineer, he better have a good talk to himself!

You win Axman, your ability to comment is suspended. Once you got to over 12 postings we thought “you ” need the time out. and if anyone else wants to flaunt the privilege, their next in line

So Dur-ragon takes “exception with people that risk my life and the lives of others with stupid moves out on the hwy” but then blinds them so they can run into someone else. Some pretty sound logic there. Now we know why that profession is referred to as zeroes.
I feel sorry for the good truck drivers out there trying to stay out of the stereotype.

I used to enjoy the Friday Free for All, but lately it is the same old, same old.

I think I will pass by this feature from now on.
