Roy Spooner Named Citizen of Year

Friday, October 17, 2014 @ 10:00 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Community Foundation has selected Roy Spooner as the 2014 Citizen of the Year.

The announcement was made at the foundation’s gala celebration Friday eveningroy-spooner-for-council-15-jpg at the Coast Inn of the North. Spooner was chosen from among a group of nominees which also included Norma Allison, Andrew Burton, Penny Jones and Brent Marshall, although Marshall withdrew his name earlier this month.

The Community Foundation says Spooner has spent many years working with local organizations including Rotary, the Royal Canadian Legion, Barkerville Heritage Trust and the Chamber of Commerce.  Further it says the Aboriginal Business Development Centre, Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Prince George Public Library, Spirit of the North Health Care Foundation and the Community Arts Council have all benefitted from his dedication and leadership.

The foundation describes Spooner as “the ideas guy, always looking for ways for an organization to be better with no expectation of something in return, a visionary and part of the intricate quilt that builds a future for the north.”

Spooner has also entered his name in the race for a city council seat in the Nov. 15th civic election.
