New Distracted Driving Penalty Takes Effect
Prince George, B.C.- Today is the day the Province starts to ramp up the penalties for distracted driving.
As of today, those found in violation of this rule, will find three points tacked on to their driving record in addition to being levied a $167 dollar fine.
The new penalty for using a hand-held electronic device covers infractions such as talking on, holding or dialing a cellular phone, operating a hand-held audio player (such as an iPod or mp3 player), or programming a GPS.
Distracted driving is the second leading contributing factor of vehicle fatalities in B.C.
Penalty points remain on a person’s driving record for five years and can result in further sanctions, including prohibitions from driving. Of note,
B.C.’s distracted driving legislation also prohibits drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program from using any hands-free device.

Still not enough!
Don’t worry is still ok to play on your laptop, while traveling at a high rate of speed.
I agree,Grizz, confiscate the phone, impound the vehicle, perhaps then they will pay attention to driving.
They’ll just be issued another one…
I agree….the penalty is NOT NEAR ENOUGH!!!!!! As a pedestrian, I have repeatedly had to avoid being run over by these idiots!!!!
Speeding is breaking the law and almost everyone does it even though it gets you a fine plus points… You have to be foolish to think this new law will stop people from using their phones while driving.
Have you even looked at the ICBC DPP premiums? They add up fast so stop your complaining.
Should be the same penalties as driving while impaired. After all these people are like “phone junkies”.
Some of you people would have trouble chewing gum and walking . If you can’t talk on your phone and drive , than get off the road. The cops can drive and talk on there phone and play on there computers , so why can’t you do it? Pretty soon you won’t be able to talk to your kids that sitting in the back seat. What’s next , cover the dash so we need to keep our eyes on the road all the time?

Copy and paste that statement in your obituary.
Are the truckers allowed to chat on their radios while bombing down the highways?
navigator11: Yes, I would very much like to see you take a test on a driving course while constantly talking on your phone. I think you would be very surprised at the results in how much you missed and how many close calls you had without even noticing them.
That is simple: Make it mandatory for all drivers to receive the same instruction for multi-tasking behind the wheel, that the RCMP so obviously receive.
Give more…..what a great idea. I would do that anyday .
First time I used the phone in the 90’s while driving I couldn’t remember the traffic for that brief period of time. Absolutely nothing!
After that, it was always pull over and talk. Shook me.
