Move Up Prince George Offers Hundreds of Job Openings
Prince George, B.C. – It’s been over a month since Initiatives Prince George launched its Move Up Prince George campaign, aimed at attracting folks to move to Prince George.
The web site offers information on everything from jobs to neighbourhoods as IPG works to attract residents to Prince George and help local companies find employees.
IPG’s CEO Heather Oland says the campaign is producing interest “We are incredibly pleased, we’ve got analytics from the websites and analytics from the advertising and we are really pleased with the engagement of local employers.”
The Move Up Prince George campaign was launched in September in the target cities of Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Toronto and Windsor. The message being that Prince George is a place where you can not only advance your career, but own a home and enjoy all the amenities of urban life. Oland says people in those centres are checking out the website “The top five target markets are in the top ten of the communities where our (website) hits are coming from”.
Right now, there are 763 job openings posted “That’s a big number in a labour pool of 52 thousand people” says Oland “So there is definitely work available.”
Oland says the campaign has sparked lots of activity in social media where there’s been plenty of tweeting and re-tweeting and the campaign has brought at least one person to the city “We know, so far, of one machinist in Edmonton who saw the ads and the media exposure, and has now moved to Prince George and is a successful machinist here.”
Oland says local employers are key to the success of this campaign “It’s really important for the local employers to create their account ( no fee) so that they can post their jobs directly, so they can become featured jobs that are highlighted on the main page instead of just being added to a long list of positions.” She says creating an account is easy to do by following instructions on the website. Creating an account also helps IPG follow up with employers to see if the campaign is producing the intended results.

After reading through the “move up prince george” site I am not sure I live in the same prince george the site portrays. There is a picture of a house that probably retails for $750,000.00 and a statement that tells of the average house costing $260,000.00. Night life abounding in the downtown yet we read about the lack of clubs and night life for the younger crowd downtown.
IPG highlights medical facilities yet the wait times for elective surgery are 12 months plus.
Great fairy tale by IPG.
I agree with Resident. The website is somewhat misleading. As for all the jobs, even those are questionable. Posting ones that are in Grande Prairie, where accommodation availability is next to nil, is pointless. Looks good though.
If IPG is funded by my tax dollars I question the use of my tax money to promote this since the local employers could have created their own website to advertise job openings and opportunities without our financial help!
Are the local employers handicapped by some unknown condition that renders them incapable of doing this all by themselves?
If you search keyword “Prince George” all of the sudden you job opportunities drop to around 100, with many being part time or relief. So not 763 openings for a labour pool of 52K. The extra 650 jobs are all over northern BC and Alberta, so need to expand the labour pool as well.
Sure glad my tax dollars are being used to compete with the likes of Monster, the BC Gov jobs site and…ahem…Kijiji (right Mr. Harper?).
I really have a hard time understanding the constant negative attitude towards any endeavor that is ever put forth by anyone in this community to try to foster a more positive image for all of us!
It may not be PERFECT, but the purpose of the web site is to highlight and promote the opportunities and lifestyle available in Prince George and Northern BC. If this plays one small part in convincing someone to consider Prince George as the place to raise their family it is a GOOD thing.
The only way this City will prosper and be able to afford all of the services that we all clamour for and demand of our city council is if we can grow our population base, grow our business community and at the same time grow out tax base!
I agree NyteHawwk. Let’s grow PG. Is the website perfect, no. But it’s a great step in the right direction. Get enough of them and we will see people moving here.
Very well said, NyteHawwk.
You first need a job before you can move here. Many employers put ads in the paper or on line for employment but never intend on hiring anyone. Looks good just before an election – things are booming you know.
