Prince George, B.C. – The tragic events in Ottawa Wednesday overshadowed a discussion about Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project and an anti-tanker bill at the College of New Caledonia last night.
The discussion was led by Skeena-Bulkely Valley NDP MP Nathan Cullen who spent the first 30 minutes of the scheduled two hour event recounting what happened and taking questions from the roughly 50 people in attendance.
He started by expressing his admiration for Sargeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers calling his actions a “heroic act” but stressing how parliament must remain a public building.
“We’re going to have to change what we do obviously but it is an important principle that parliament belongs to the people.”
Cullen says he was also “disappointed” to hear of the attack of a mosque in Cold Lake Alberta but suggested it “represented such a small minority of Canadians.”
As for why and how the attack took place one person asked if it had anything to do with the Conservatives “watering down of gun laws” to which Cullen responded it was “too soon to say.”
Another person said it was a mistake for Canada to pledge support to fight terrorism in the Middle East and should instead “keep our troops home.”
Cullen wrapped up the talk apologizing for taking up so much time on the unintended topic referring to it as “the elephant in the room” but something he felt worthy of discussion.

Mr Cullen is an expert on pipelines ,super tankers and now national security. Maybe he can push for the honour gaurd at the War Memorial to carry functional weapons with live rounds . The whole incident on Wednesday have had a totally different outcome.
The soldier who was killed was shot in the back, so I don’t think being armed would have made a difference in this sneaky and cowardly attack.
And, what, Cullen has to be an expert in all these things before he can talk about them? You an expert in security? Didn’t think so.
Cullen’s job is to criticise everything the government supports.
Gun laws, well it was illigal for the deranged twit to possess firearms in the first place. So called strengthing of gun laws only makes it harder for legal owners not bad guys. Is not murder illegal?

Thank you for recognizing this seamut more people need to understand long gun registry is not the answer in this case.
Krusty you seem to have missed the word Maybe in my previous previous post. I personally feel anyone trained by a police force or military,to use firearms should carry them when in uniform. There was a second honour gaurd present that could have possibly done something to prevent the incident from going further than the War Memorial. I’m assuming military reservists have weapons training.

…………………
If Cullen had any gonads , he would have told his NDP supporter and audience that the gun laws have not been watered down, which they haven’t.
Heres Cullen, who’s sole source of income is taxes paid by working people and corporations still trying to shut down the Gateway project.
An anti-tanker bill? Who does he think he is? The NDP and their ilk should be all over in support for this, if only based on the following…
$1 billion in total long-term benefits for Aboriginal communities, $1.2 billion in tax revenue for British Columbia and $4.3 billion in labour-related income over the next 30 years. Over the same time period, the project will contribute more than $300 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product.
