Cheques Are In The Mail Says Province

Wednesday, October 29, 2014 @ 2:04 PM

Prince George, B.C.- The Province has started issuing the cheques to families that applied  for  daycare subsidy during the  strike by teachers in B.C.

Minister of Finance, Michael de Jong says familes can  expect to start receiving the cheques in the mail shortly “Our intention with the temporary education support payment was to provide a modest degree of support for

parents who incurred most of those costs.”

About 165 thousand cheques have been mailed out since October 20th,  that’s about half the number  of  cheques expected to be  sent out.

The registrations so far involved  nearly 295 thousand eligible students,  so,  if  the Province was to spend $40 per day, per student, over 13 days,  that would mean the Province is expecting to pay out  about $153 million dollars.

Most families should expect to receive their cheque over the next couple of weeks.

Families that filed for students starting kindergarten or are new to BC  public schools  may have to wait a little longer as student registration will ned to be confirmed with  school districts.  Those families  can expect payment to be  mailed out in  late November.

Parents (or primary caregivers) who have not yet registered for the payment, have until January 31st to do so.  Registration can be done on line.

153 million.. Yikes.

I pay school taxes, I want a refund for the days school was not in session. Why should I be paying for someone else’s daycare ?

I agree. I pay into the education system, I should get the same refund as everyone else.

The refund is meant to cover daycare costs while schools were not in session. It was not meant to be a general refund.

I understand that JB but it isn’t correct that we pay for the daycare. I have no problem at all paying School tax.. But it’s called School Tax, not daycare, or babysitting tax. We have all had our lives interfered with due to some labour issue. I don’t get paid extra when I needed more babysitting than expected, comes with the terrotory if choosing to be a patent.

Tax payers should not foot this bill, but crusty will happily dip her hands once again in our wallets. She won’t stop until all our wallets are empty..

It will be no diferent than the welfare cheque the bars will be full and all the fast food joints will be busy . This looks so bad on Dear Chrispie , we have seniors who cannot afford meds and food , the homeless , our medical care in ruin. What the hell is she thinking .

This is true. In the old days, the money saved on strikes was given back to the teachers in their settlements. This time, it went back to the parents to offset the added cost of daycare while teachers were on strike.

By way of disclosure, I will be getting a cheque for this for my kids, even though I could afford the extra for the daycare. Many low income working families were not in the same position.
