Thursday, October 30, 2014 @ 11:59 PM

It may be Halloween, but there  should be no tricks or treats  in  today’s offering.

It is  your day to  speak up on the issues that matter to you.  It is time for the Friday Free for All.

You pick the topic, but please, be respectful of the  opinions of others.  This is meant to be a forum for discussion, not  a  venue  to bash each other.  You may not agree with their opinion, but personal attacks  are not acceptable.

The rules are simple:

Keep it clean

Keep it legal

No bullying of others

Boo!

Had a call from a Lyn Hall volunteer this evening asking if I would be supporting Lyn for mayor. Reminded me of three years ago when Sheri’s campaign did the same thing. I guess Lyn has the same backers (and presumably the same $$) as she did last election.

Happy Hollows every one….keep it safe,,I finally have a day off. Will not be giving out candy. Will shut the lights out and sleep through it..as my co worker says $%#@ the kids….lol thats not me, but shift work requires rest and SLEEP. One day off in 18 requires rest. Have a great Halloween everyone…dont drink and drive/text.

Isn’t it nice having Costco Gas ???? At 110… probably some cooter will awake and find fault with that…hehehe

Can’t wait for elections to be over so those unsightly signs can be taken down. The ugly stands take away from the signs and seems like overkill at some intersections

Please, if you’re driving tonight, be very careful of the trick or treaters out on the streets. Not all will be paying attention to safety in their excitement over collecting goodies.
Have a safe weekend everyone.

to the guy who took out all the signs down Demano, 2 thumbs up buddy, that was just a complete eye sore. Just so people are aware of now a days young people vote on who has little to no signs up they are deffinatley gettinig my vote.

Yesterday I finally ventured into the downtown area to see what the big to do was with the 4th avenue remake, and I found out!

For the most part it is a two way one lane road now.
Slower, more inconvenient but acceptable for the most part..

However, the engineers and the city people involved should be fired for the dangerous mess they have created where 5th avenue becomes 4th avenue…
No warning signs about a change off traffic paatern…
so as you are driving along all of a sudden the left lane has to turn left… yes there is a painted island indicating you got to go left but that will be pretty useless once the snow falls.
There is absolutely no indicating of this until you are on it….
I wonder how many accidents, injuries or deaths it will take before appropriate signage will be installed.

All I can say is I am glad I did this when ther was little or no traffic.

You know, I really like the new fourth avenue, gives an interesting perspective. Especially when you get to Victoria street heading westward, as you glance to the left you get a good view of our new police station, very impressive indeed, especially at night as you see the glow of those blue lights.

The new 4th Avenue is ridiculous. Air quality is bad enough in this town without all the added 4 way stops. Yeah, let’s reduce the flow of traffic to a near standstill then make them idle at every intersection. Nicely done.

Please report to the non-emergency RCMP line any and all incidents of vehicle(s) driving on lawns and yards of properties in the Hart Highlands, Valleyview and other areas of the Hart Highway. Let’s ask for more patrol cars and put a stop this vandalism for the safety of all the children, pets and residents. (250) 561-3300.

How about the parking down in that area now? I was blown away as to how long it took me to find parking between 2nd and 4th Ave. Not only is Bacon Palace a waste of space in the downtown, but the parking too. About 1/3 of the designated police parking was empty.

Spooky morning to all! Have fun out there little ghouls.

Re: New traffic patterns in downtown, not just 4th ave. Very confusing… Line painting budget will have to go UP to maintain the increase in line footage and left turn lanes. It will be very interesting driving in the winter. I guess our traffic dept. forgot that roads are covered with snow half the year. This will be a real Cluster F—. Note to traffic dept. Keep It simple.

I drove down the new 4th avenue twice this week. Its a bit slow but seriously if it confuses you please turn in your license.

Pretty much same as Massey as it gets to the underpass at Parkwood and the new one lane on the hospital side from Parkwood and must turn right lane on the other side? If I had not traveled it yesterday how the heck is one to know that traffic pattern has changed once snow is on the streets? Some people will be trying to drive the old way (me included if I hadn’t ventured that direction) and some the new way. Let’s see how they pain the lines next spring. Probably been that way for a while but rarely travel it anymore since the kids no longer go to Duchess. Love the new lights on OGrady, well worth the money Mr city hall

Driving down 4th Ave these days is hilarious. At every intersection where two or more cars meet, we all sit there looking at each other wondering who has the right of way. Not all are 4 way stops, but people stop anyway just in case. I’d say it’s a disaster, and worked just fine before.

Interceptor……Was that you on the MOPED ??

Can somebody explain how with all of the dangerous uncontrolled intersections in town that the City decided that it was a priority to put up traffic lights behind Canadian Tire?

City Administration for all intents and purposes is dysfunctional. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what they do.

They have all their departments with huge budgets, and scuttle around finding places to spend money.

We need an audit of City spending for the past ten years, to get things into perspective, and then we need to clean house.

We would be better off having John Cleesh in charge, at least then we could pretend that the operation of City Hall was a comedy.

I think they changed the 4th avenue pattern because people were complaining about how ugly the police station was. Looks good when you drive toward central Not so good when you drive toward Queensway. The argument to change it to 2 way goes back to 1970 I can still hear my mom complaining about it being all one way downtown.

To the Lyn comment, I have become a Lyn fan because he is inclusive and listens when you have an issue, no matter who you are. I like Don he is a good person and a good business man and I will not say anything against him. There is enough of that going around PG right now about both Lyn and Don.

Should read John Cleese from Monty Pythons Flying Circus. He would correctly depict the shenanigans at City Hall.

Zurowski would be much closer to the Green supporters than Hall.

Hall will bring some stability to City Hall, which in my opinion is long over due.

I think they changed the 4th avenue pattern because people were complaining about how ugly the police station was

——

I’m pretty sure they changed it so that the police didn’t have to deal with a one way street right beside their new palace. ie, it’s easier to get to and from the station now.

I was joking about the change on 4th, but the police station, does look better heading toward central than towards Queensway.

I find it interesting that on one hand city hall and in particular city council is pilloried as being useless, disfunctional etc, and then in the same breath advocate for Lyn Hall who is one of the prime architects of the cluster F₩¥£ that is our city council.

Just drove the same curve down 5th to 4th and what a joke as you come around the corner…

Sound like a lot of people who drive in P.G should revoke their drivers license. Hopefully they don’t venture outside the bubble!

Palopu obviously had his coffee this morning. Love everything he stated so far.

Agree with you NyteHawwk. I also find it strange that the unions are raising money for Lyn. How do you spell wage increase. I was going to support Lyn Hall but have decided that Don has my vote. Now to try and figure out who to vote on council.

If you want more homeless coming to P.G. just vote for Krause.

Have you sat and talked with Lyn or gone down to his office? Have you talked to the councilors? There are 3 people on council that I know disagree with me my assessment, one is the Mayor. I admit I did not talk to her but she is not running, so next. If not then go and talk to them.

Also talk to people in the school board and parents who had schools closed. Everyone who I talked to said he was available for them. Please don’t take my word for it. Go and talk to people. This is an important decision, I will respect your decision and make sure you vote.

Finally we do not know what Don would have done in the same situation. He was not there, not a slight against Don, it is a fact. But again, talk to Don and you can ask what he would have done.

duffer ..I had one this morning ,flush. Now leave Krause alone, what have you done lately? Still yet why is your name not on the ballot, see what ya can do? Hmmm maybe a study?
How bout a referendum for our own Municipal Police force?? these federallies are needed in the North Isles to watch for Russians, isis and suicide bomber Eskimos!!
Zoorowski is the better choice, lesser of 2 evils!

New update duffer … the homeless had never left town; however, the discussion about homelessness is just recently starting to come out of the closet. Be careful of the opening door.

I am aware that I am getting older and times have changed however there are some traditions I wish we could keep. While waiting for a memorial service to begin the pastor of the church walked in and was wearing jeans. When I was younger, it seemed out of respect we wore our best clothes for weddings and funerals. In our family we even dressed for Christmas dinner. Ahhh, the good old days. ….

PGNFC is building a fairly large mens shelter on Quebec St. which will have significant overhead and it will have lots of paid staff?? more info please.

Lyn, for all intents and purposes, seems like he has potential to be a decent mayor. My concern is that he had an opportunity to emerge as a leader when there clearly wasn’t a good one during his current term as councilor.

Don is a proven leader. You might not always agree with him, but he studies the information he has and makes decisions. He has a pretty clear vision for our city, whereas Lyn sounds like he just wants to engage and consult with the community. I’m sorry, but we can’t afford to have a mayor that spends half his term formulating a plan based on his consultation with the community. Hasn’t he had years to do that already?

We need strong leadership NOW. I don’t know how anybody can hack on current council and in the same breath be a Lyn Hall support. It makes no sense. You don’t have to be the mayor to be a leader in the council chamber. The leadership experience he says he brings to the table wasn’t evident.

bitter

Most likely a prisoner transition group home.
Would be an interesting topic for IPG to investigate hey!

bcracer, I had that exact thought this morning when driving across 5th Avenue where it meets Winnipeg. I wondered too how long it will be before someone driving up 5th Avenue towards that intersection drives right through and around the corner going the wrong way on that one way street. Stupid, stupid planning on behalf of the City department in charge of that.

Interesting how the trees on an acreage can be cut down leaving an ugly blight for a who knows when development. On the corner of the poorly maintained Marleau and frontage road just up from Whallies..

Maverick and bitter … a suggestion, the two of you should get together, go down to PGNFC and ask your questions. Then you might collectively develop an informed opinion and then share your findings.

Get to know both men before making a decision. Funny to hear how Zuroskis a leader….where has he been for the past six years? Three terms on council before that and he was a puppet to Kinsley just as Stoltz is to Green. I haven’t seen any leadership qualities emerge from that guy….ever! Not saying Halls the best candidate, but he’s clearly the best candidate running.

When talking about City Hall, lets keep in mind that that is where the City Manager, and all other Managers work. That’s where the dysfunction is at the moment.

When talking about the Mayor and Council then we look at the first few years where in fact it was run by Green, and was dysfunctional. It was only when Everitt, Hall, Frizzell, Krause, and Skakun, started to vote against the Mayor, and her crew that things started to change.

Zurowski had 9 years on Council, much more time that some of the councilors mentioned above, and for all intents and purposes he did nothing. So he’s probably not better or worse than the rest.

Hall has plenty of experience on the School Board, plus his time as a Councilor, and would make a good Mayor. What we need is just some basic people to run City Hall, and to end this era of BS.

Much easier and affordable to ask the 250 news professionals, were you always get the information your looking for. Lighten up “anotherside” It’s Friday!

Socredible thought you might find this an interesting read.

Quantitative easing bleeds the poor and feeds the rich

zyblx whatever, you must be one of the homeless that wants a handout every day.

Will those folks driving today kindly turn on yer darn headlights, taillights and quit acting like Ospika and Foothills is another raceway in this fog and SLOW the heck down?!
Other than that rant, Hope everyone is safe and enjoy the evening.

Why didn’t we vote for former Canadian Tire business owner Tom Steadman years ago when he ran for mayor instead of the same old?

Also, I remember way back when all incumbents were re-elected (except Cliff Dezell who retired) despite the outspoken cries of disapproval by vocal voters who believe in decisive decision making.

Therefore, my prediction for the upcoming election is, yes, the same old. We’ll have Zurowski as mayor (mostly because he went underground for a few years) and nearly all of the incumbents will be re-elected.

PG won’t attract first class politicians because of the shoulder patting antics the current clueless politicians are walloping in, because of voters who cannot differentiate between snowplowing issues and Krause propaganda and administration’s sense entitlement.

Time to lower diesel fuel price dont you think.

That traffic light at Ferry and Lansdowne is sure awesome. It stops 30 vehicles in each direction to allow one vehicle on Lansdowne to turn either left or right onto Ferry. Why would the light stop traffic to allow someone to turn right off of Lansdowne?

Once again our planners at city hall are showing their intelligence.

Initiatives Prince George kind of a like C.I.A. a contradiction in term. Initiative is great but you need follow through to make anything work and well frankly “follow through” is greatly lacking in this city. I can only hope that with the pending election we can get some forward thinking and motivated people in council under some intelligent leadership. Need folks to call shenanigans when it smells bad, no more political correctness, shoot from the hip and cut to the quick. Make a decision based on actually research and if it’s good move on it.

November 15th remember this as you go to the poles “Prince George First”.

We need intelligent action cause we are all done with the political lip service.

Cannot argue that a change is needed in some of the faces around the council table but to toss them all out is pushing it a bit too far. If all of the incumbents were crossed off the list I could not pick 8 people to fill the ballot out of those remaining.

Green is gone which is a positive, if Ssstoltz and Wilbur follow her that alone will be a move in the right direction. With Hall taking a run at the big chair that would mean three new faces and hopefully a more productive group that plays well together.

As for the mayor’s spot am leaning towards Zurowski. I think Hall had his eye on top spot when he ran for council and has had three years to prove himself and stand head and shoulders above the rest, something IMO he has not done.

Yes… should have made Lansdow turn right only, instead of putting in a light. Like it is coming out of T reasure Cove. Light at Can Tire??/ hmmmm maybe there is a subdivision of spirits living in that unseemingly empty area that we can’t see but City Hall does

Anotherside; If I went down to the PGNFS I would not have a clue where to go in the HUGE old government building. No offence to anyone but I would suggest they move Native Health into the building and use the top floor for Native housing. That would save a lot of money and the money saved could go toward PAC that everyone could enjoy, maybe on Quebec St.

bitter… maybe it’s time you visited the NFC. It is open to the general public, you know. When you walk in, there is a receptionist to your left who will give you directions. And maybe you could give them your suggestions while there

That’s sad… the way WorkSafe is giving the injured employees of Lakeland the runaround.. Yeahhh those guys don’t care bout anyone long as they are still sitting in their posh office still collecting a paycheque. Worksafe needs a good shake up and change their policies

was driving from 1st to 15th along victoria when i came to 4th avenue – the sign above the traffic lights showed a one-way arrow down 4th – if i had not have known better i would have turned left right into a vehicle going up 4th – sure hope they took that sign down

Stillsmokin: Why do you think they changed their name to Worksafe from Worker’s Compensation Board?
I guess they don’t consider themselves a compensation board any more. I just wonder why it took them so long to realise that?
Its no wonder, what with the run around they give inured workers. Pretty frustrating to try to deal with them at all.
Now all they want to do is tell people what they’re doing wrong.

What was happening in Houston today??? There were police cars and ghost cars and a swat truck blocking off the road across from the 7-11. Was this just a training exercise? There were guys with guns all around the white house there. Any info???

That was a police incident involving a distraught woman. It all ended without injury.

The city needs fresh folks at the wheel to tell city administration what to do, not the other way around.
I want Lynn Hall as Mayor, I want Jeff Cunin as a fresh mind, Brian Skakun, Everitt, don’t want Stolz anywhere near my tax dollars, Munoz can find something else to occupy her time. I do like Koehlers ideas and will vote for him as well.
As far as school trustee, I do not want any teacher or retired teacher anywhere near it.

Doubl flusher duffer…..

Give: “Its no wonder, what with the run around they give inured workers. Pretty frustrating to try to deal with them at all. ”

I know someone who works there. They spend a lot of time separating the legitimate cases from those who want to sit at home for the rest of their lives and collect a cheque, and there’s quite a few of those.

Sparrow. I agree with most of what you say, however I think that Hall is the man for the Mayors chair. Zurowski has had ample time (9 years) to make a mark, and he failed to do so. In fact if memory serves me right he considered leaving Prince George, after he lost to Rodgers by a whopping 2700 votes when he ran for Mayor in 2008.

I think that its time for Koehler to move on. He doesn’t live in the City and I doubt if he has our best interests at heart.

Not sure who we should elect in their place, however we are running out of time, and will have to make the decision soon.

Dragonmaster ;

The traffic light at Lansdowne & Ferry .

Is not only controlled by traffic from Lansdowne.

But also pedestrian controlled , which I believe is longer.

Also the city buses trying to get on Ferry.

Ferry is just another raceway.

That’s the thing that bugs me about Zurowski, can’t think of a thing he’s done for the working man or woman taxpayers who build this city. At least you can sit down and talk to Hall.

One scenario if Stolz, Wilbur, Koehler were to leave, would be to replace them with Terri McConnachie, Jillian Merrick, Bryan Mix, and Trent Derrick.

I think that this would give us a balanced working Council. Merrick is kind of young, however she can and does represent a lot of younger people, Mix has experience at the School Board, and is a qualified accountant, and would probably do well on the Finance Committee. Derrick, has a local business, and seems to have a good grasp of whats happening in the City, McConnachie is full of enthusiasm and will bring some life to Council. She also has done a lot of volunteer work, and seems to be serious about the job.

In any event that’s one scenario, of course there are others, because of all the people running. We need to be sure this time around that we get the right people.

This is our last chance to get it right. Four years to the next election. We need stability at City Hall, people who can represent all the people of Prince George, and not just vested interests.

I just heard the conservative nomination was call and no one got notice. Way to go Shari and Cameron. Not sure I want someone in government who play unfair. If you are a conservative you should speak up.

Burke who killed the three cops gets 75 years before parole. A very good law reform from Harper. Never see that from the libs or NDP. Good for the families as they will not have to endear hearings.

Where have all the children gone? Every year there are fewer trick or treaters. So far only 9 kids, including one 6′ 14 year old. Isn’t there an age limit on begging for candy?

Huh? Try living in my area 70 plus kids so far. I am to the point of just leaving the front door open to save on the wear of the hinges

Dean Del Mastro, Harpers fomer aide, and Conservative MP convicted and possibly going to prison. This is just the start. Just wait for the sentencing in the Robocall case. Chickens coming home to roost for the Conservatives!

Had over 175 kids this evening before running out of candy and turning out the lights. Lots of kids still coming! Sorry, kids, no candy left :-( !!

Hmmm, wonder where all the “lefties” are today?

Figured they would be here in droves complaining about the CBC canning poor lil’ Jian Ghomeshi!!

Here’s one for you…lets all go downtown and drive up and down 4th ave while having a timmes, and lets all of us be texting going 20 over the speed limit…the odd guy could be making out with his gf, or rolling a big fatty…..this happens every day here.but if 200 ppl did it it would grab attention…flash mob fouth….I say

Halloween. Blech.

Get off my lawn!!!

—————-

I read that as “caining” at first. Bad me.

Here is part of the judges decision in finding Del Masro, Conservative MP for Peterborough, guilty. Could read as a general indictment of Harpers Government

““The defence evidence does not raise a reasonable doubt about the allegations; further, the evidence I accept does prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Ontario Court Justice Lisa Cameron, as the accused sat stone faced, his hands in his lap.

“There are a number of inconsistencies and improbabilities,” she said of his testimony.

“At times, the way in which he testified led me to believe that he is avoiding the truth. . . . On a number of occasions, Del Mastro did not answer the questions put to him in cross-examination. He frequently obfuscated the evidence.”

Del Mastro faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine on each charge. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 21.

very clever axman!! ;-)

They are going to have to have a lot of paid staff, who the heck else would run the place? Certainly not the ‘clients’
Something like 16 private bedrooms on the second floor, each equipped with a full bathroom and a kitchenette. Theres about 8 or 9 private bedrooms on the main floor, those clients have to go down the hall for a bathroom break. A serious laundry room in the basement, a commercial kitchen with a dining hall, two elevators, offices, meeting rooms, 24 hour staffing, maintenance ( I hope!! )Yeah, I’d say that more than a few jobs will be created.
metalman.

There are so many opinions and responses regarding Hall, Zurowski and incumbent councillors that are sheer speculation. That’s said as few say, I’ve listened carefully or studied issues. Instead of complaining, they say never speak of a problem without thinking of a solution you could pass on. Is Hall strongly supported by Union? I’d say so if every time you see them, the USW union coats are in full force. If we want a mind set that we should get whatever we want without regard for economy, or our children’s future, or we pay for more studies…. If you want someone who always backs up a problem with the solution and has business background to support it and works hard, then Zurowski. We should judge any candidate on what they bring to the table for the better and future of “our” city. Don’t judge a book by its cover…judge on material content.

Agreed Zena – what so we prefer for a mayor – a career politician who the union is pushing for or a successful business man?
Zurowski is the obvious choice

Grizzly2 you made a comment couldn’t think of a thing Zurowski did but can talk to Hall. Of course Hall will listen. He is a polite man. Does he have any business sense of what to then do? Seems he was part of the council that decides to buy an expensive review, implement some things, oops, change your mind, study it again. School Board record, well, get a set figure from government, follow it, close many schools. What has Zurowski done…. If you were at the library debate, how about save $8million dollars on the Cameron Street bridge but doing his own homework and recommending use of structure already in place. If off on exact engineering terms, well, I didn’t miss the 8 million dollar figure.

From the Huffington Post

“Former parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page slammed Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a speech in Halifax on Thursday, comparing him to Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.

Page, asked to speak about accountability in Ottawa, said he thinks Canada has changed so much in recent years, it needs a long, drawn-out American-style election to air all the important questions.

“I think what we’ve got in Ottawa right now is Putinesque. It’s control from the top down,” Page said at an annual fundraiser for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.”
