Prince George, B.C. – The UNBC Timberwolves are proud to recognize 15 Academic All-Canadians for the 2013-2014 year. These students have found a way to balance life and athletics allowing them to achieve both in sport and the classroom.
A reception was held to recognize the academic efforts of 15 UNBC student-athletes on Wednesday, November 5. To be recognized as an Academic All-Canadian a student must have used a year of eligibility, meaning they were an active member of a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) team, and have accomplished an average of 80 percent or higher during that same year. At UNBC student-athletes must achieve a GPA of 3.67 during that year. In 2013-2014, a record total of 2,861 students from CIS schools across Canada achieved the prestigious status, eclipsing the previous mark of 2,695 set a year ago.
With just over 70 student-athletes at UNBC, the Athletics and Recreation department is happy to see over one fifth of its student-athletes being recognized not only for their athletic efforts but for their academic work as well. For the first time all four of the varsity programs are represented. Men’s soccer registered the greatest number of UNBC’s Academic All-Canadians with a total of six, women’s soccer and women’s basketball each added four, and Devin McMurtry was the sole award recipient from men’s basketball. Of the 15 recipients seven are receiving the award for the second year in a row and nine are current members of a varsity program.
