You Will Guide the Future Of Prince George

Monday, November 10, 2014 @ 3:45 AM

With less than one week to go there remains no clear winner in the Mayor’s race and no particular person that has moved ahead of the pack in the race for councillor. If we do experience a small turn out, that favours the incumbents and for those that have complained about the manner in which city hall has been run , those that fail to vote will have no room to be critical of the council or mayor.

The fact that a federal nomination for the riding of Cariboo-Prince George has been called, for all intents and purpose, in the middle of the civic election, suggests  the feds have little interest in seeing that the civic election  is over before they stake their claim to the riding. It was the national body that called the nomination closing and set the date for the nomination meeting , not the local newly minted  directors however, it is not known just what influence the local directors may have had in arranging the dates.

But  in the municipal race, there is only one  sure fire winner  for a seat on council,  and that is Brian Skakun , who, in all likelihood will top the polls. As for the remaining incumbents, your guess is as good as mine. Are we going to see any new faces on council?  We are guaranteed at least one, and it will be interesting to see if there  will be a general back lash over the past year of  workings at City Hall.

Trust, Transparency, open information, a number of words are being used to describe what the voters now see as their main issue. It boils down to a community that wants to be much more in touch with its city council and also voters who want to have some say in what takes place in the city over the next four years.

Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper has been to China three times over his years in office.  Prince George’s outgoing Mayor, Shari Green , made two trips in less than a year, and that is an example of what the taxpayers are saying when they suggest they want more accountability during the term of office, not just when an election rolls around.

Saturday is an important date in Prince George.  It is the date that you will decide on who you want at the helm to guide this city over the next four years. Choose  wisely.

I’m Meisner ands that’s one man’s opinion.

Thanks Ben, very well said. It’s time for the voting citizens of Prince George to take an interest and get out and vote. There are many countries in the world, where it’s citizens do not get this opportunity. My fellow Prince Georgians of voting age and ability both old and young, seize the opportunity to help mold the future of our city by taking time to vote this coming Saturday November 15 :)

Culture is huge in China and building a relationship is very important to them. It is not like north America where you meet today and we have a deal tomorrow and if you can go sepreate ways relatively easily.
In China it takes a long time to build a relationship but once established it is much stronger. No matter who is in the chair in the future they need to keep the relationship or we start all over again.
It is no longer a north America controls everything world and if we do not recognize this we will always be just a resourse provider to the rest of the world a when the resourses are gone, what do you propose we sell?

Remember who greens friends are and make sure that they get no votes.
Let’s make sure tthat the green era is just s bad memory a year from now.
Don’t let it linger like a bad odour.

Except we have no resourses.
Just resources.
It’s hard to take you seriously when you can’t spell.

I’ll take the contrary position. People should only vote if they’re informed and have an IQ over 100. That rules out a lot of the PG population but prevents people from voting for candidates because someone told them to or they saw the signs or…

Oh my lildigger are you another one of those perfect people?

We go out we vote we bitch! Repeat.

Lol. Sure, those that spell change the world, I noticed that. Have a chat with Edison and Ford neither changed the world, but occasionally they may have misspelled a word or two.
Seriously, you are correct, I am not very intelligent. Now you don’t need to prove how much smarter you are than I and you can dismiss what I wrote. After all what is a “c” and an “s” between friends.

Axman- You may consider not voting.

IQ is a number meant to measure people cognitive abilities (intelligence) in relation to their age group. An I.Q between 90 and 110 is considered average; over 120, superior.

Roughly 68% of the population has an IQ between 85 and 115. The average range between 70 and 130, and represents about 95% of the population. A score below 70 may indicate problems in understanding the iQ questions or soem type or retardation, and a score above 130 may indicate intellectual giftedness.

1% of the population has an IQ of 136 or higher. However, an individual scoring 100 within one population can score above or below that value within another population, for example, the Japanese are supposed to have the highest average IQ in the world (115), but this 115 can only be an average of 100 within their own population.

And why would I want to do that? Unlike the sheep I’m not going to vote for Skakun.

axman- To post a comment such as yours would put your IQ below 70. You sad it not anyone else. LOL

who is there to vote for ? Same olds for mayors , one who lost his vote the last time , same old for council , no thank you .

That’s a rather bizarre conclusion. I guess in my world you wouldn’t get to vote?

I liked what axman said, “prevents people from voting for candidates because someone told them to or they saw the signs or…”

It is really funny. I can’t imagine anyone trying to sway votes here or anywhere else with just a sign. Everyone must read about all the candidates. ;)

I wonder if people who “speak the loudest” actually have read their candidates platforms. I suspect many have not, but only they will ever know.

Signs, flyers, and websites don’t encourage me to vote. Listening to candidates live is the better way but I can always tell when someone is talking BS from their mouth. So far I have one mayor and two candidates I like, the rest, blah no thanks. Oh and the whole fluoride thing is not getting a checkmark from me. I could care less either way and I say good luck on that.

Wow – why is everyone so cranky this morning? Must be Monday.

This election is about voting in a Council and Mayor who will use common sense, and be inclusive of all the citizens of Prince George.

Whether we like them or not. Skakun, Krause, Frizzell, and Everitt, are a mix of long term, and short term, Councillors. We need to keep some of the experienced people on board. Not a good idea to have a completely new Council, of newbies.

Hall has plently of experience and would make a good Mayor and keep the City on track for the next four years. Zurowski had his kick at the cat when he was a Councilor for 9 years, and then his failed attempt when he ran for Mayor in 2008. He has had his day in the sun, and its time for us to move on.

There are plenty of newbies running and its any ones guess as to who might win, however we need to vote strategically or we will end up with the same Council as before with one newbie.

PS. Should have read **kick at the can** don’t want to upset the animal lovers.

It really doesn’t matter whom you vote for the point is to get out and vote. If your going to have a 27% turn out it means that those who have a vested interest in city affairs will get the attention of mayor and council and the rest of you can keep on whining about poor government.

We live in a democracy and it mean you have to participate. If you don’t you get what’s left over.
Cheers

In the past three years, taxes and user fees have increased substantially. In order to pass those increases you need 5 votes. If we go with Palopu’s voting suggestions then we know that Green, Wilber, Kohler and Stoltz are evil. My question for you is who was the fifth vote?

That is absolute nonsense. The point of voting is to elect people to represent us; the point is not “to get out and vote”. People who don’t take the time and effort to inform themselves about the candidates and the issues shouldn’t be voting.

“It really doesn’t matter whom you vote for the point is to get out and vote.”

They used to have big signs along the highways telling people something similar to the above! I always thought of it as being kind of dismissive and arrogant, as if they were unintentionally (?) telling us that they just need voters to do some kind of voting (and give the election process legitimacy) and that the result did not matter much because we were getting the same old same old no matter what!

is absolute nonsense. The point of voting is to elect people to represent us

======================================================================

You didn’t message the message did you. With a 27% turn out at election time how do you suppose you would get a council that would represent the needs of ALL the taxpayers. Green had a $80,000.00 election fund so who would she represent? And it doesn’t matter how well informed those are that voted.

Every one of the candidates that are running for office have a good
“I Q”. I f you have a low turn out they will do what’s the easiest route for them because they have no guidance. They will be looking at how the taxpayer responded at election time when the going gets tough.

So you do your research axman and if you don’t see what you like don’t bother to vote just keep on whining about the poor governance that you have

…So you do your research axman…

———-

I’ve done my research. What the hell does this even mean, “You didn’t message the message did you.”

I always voted for Fetterley he looked like the guy that would ask a lot of questions. Not a great oritatore like Zurouski. The big brains in the executives office don’t like questions. They want you to be on their level and the hell with the Taxpayer.

Why does Skakun top the poles every year?. I’ll bet he dosent have an IQ of 130 but he’s in tune with the taxpayer and gets his guidance from them. I always liked Brian, I know him personally, you could talk to him and get a reasonable answer.

Everyone of the councilors and mayor candidates that Meisner intervened were reasonable intelligent people. Well I guess Zurouski is a bit questionable with his “growth” ideas. And some don’t like Hall but I bet he’s a listener. Its all you intelligent people that don’t like whos on the ballot and don’t bother to vote got Green that you deserve/

We don’t have form like 250 here in Abbotsford where Meisener does it all. So you read and choose but I will probably vote for the first eight guys on the ballot.
Cheers

02, I could have guessed you voted for Fetterly…you obviously messaged his message and he must have been a good enough oritatore as far as you were concerned. Do you know anything about politics in good old Abby? If not, you have a 5 days to educate yourself, start paying attention so you can make an informed decision.

Oneup482. Very good question. There were a number of votes on these tax increases, and road, and snow increases, plus utility increases, where all Councillors voted for them, or at least enough to get them passed. On some I expect that the only opposing vote was Skakun. (Whats new)

In any event in the last year, things started to change, and Hall, Skakun, Frizell, Everitt, and Krause voted against a number of motions, that were near and dear to Ms. Green’s and Mr. Stolz’s heart, and they did not have the votes to pass them.

That’s when things changed at City Hall. Green and Stolz no longer controlled Council and basically threw in the towel.

Those Councillors who were Green supporters now want to get elected with a new Mayor, and at least one additional supporter so that they can go back to controlling City Council. That’s why it is necessary to throw them out. We need to take a break from vested interest politics, and basically look after the business of the City.

If you feel that Stolz, Wilbur, Koehler, Zurowski, and one additional Zurowski supporter will look after your interests, by all means vote for them. Somehow I don’t think that looking after the actual needs of this City are upper most in their minds.

There is a candi-dating night coming up. You have two minutes to spend with a councilor to discuss issues that are important to you.

Not being extremely politically minded myself, would it be “correct” to ask councilors “Who is backing you financially? Is that a question that would be politically correct?

Just asking because I heard a rumor “the same group that backed green is backing Zurowski”. One of those people include Susan Scott’s husband. So if Zurowski was voted in as mayor and Susan Scott was voted in as a councilor she would have her nose up his b–t? Similar to Stoltz and green? Is that generally how it works?

I am really trying to make some informed choices, listening to interviews and watching news etc.

I feel that working as part of a team is a very important issue for council. Candidates can say what they want while they are campaigning but the reality is they will be a part of a large team. Teamwork consists of serious discussions and compromises and includes good listening skills. Listening to other counselors as well as to the public.

One of the posters was kind enough to remind us of an issue behind Skakun and Munoz. Have they truly worked it out and put it behind them or will council have problems with the two of them? Are they professional enough to leave it out of chambers?

Susan Scott has nice signs….and that’s about it.

I hope we get some new younger faces on council, I wonder what some of the older people will look like in 4 years.

4seasns why not get out and learn a few things about people before shooting off your mouth. Yeah you probably voted for that great Ms Green and how happy are you now.
Cheers
