Arrival of Cold Heats Up Gas Consumption

Tuesday, November 18, 2014 @ 3:50 AM

Prince George, B.C.- Everyone knows  the cold weather is  starting to settle in,  just like it does every October  or November  and Fortis Gas B.C. is  hoping you will take the time to have  your gas appliances serviced to make sure  they are as efficient as possible through  the  winter season.

“The last thing anyone wants to have happen  is  to have a hot water tank heater, or furnace break down in the middle of the holidays” says Michael Allison, a spokesperson for Fortis Gas.

Allison says much of the Province  has been  experiencing some of the coldest days of the month, ” and that is the highest demand we have seen this season, so essentially  demand (for natural gas) has nearly doubled  from what it was a few weeks ago, but  as we know,   as cold as it is now,  it will get colder.”

He says there are  things  you can do to help  keep  the  gas bills down,  by wearing a sweater instead of cranking the heat higher,  by installing electrical box  insulation on outside wall  plug ins and installing new weather stripping to  stop drafts.  “Home heating  accounts for 50% of a home’s energy  consumption ” says Allison, “The point we really  want to emphasize is that when people start cranking their furnaces,  they may want to  get a technician in to take a look  if they haven’t done that already, and they will want to get a contractor who is licensed with the BC Safety Authority because they want someone who is going to do quality work.”

To help you find that  certified contractor, Fortis has developed a special  web  tool to help  you find a certified  gas contractor in  your  community. The page can be accessed here .

With the increase in gas consumption comes the increase in costs. Its costs like this that make it so much more expensive to live in the North.

Transportation costs drive up the cost of food, etc; Longer nights, burn more electricity, warming up cold cars burns more gas, etc; etc;

People on fixed incomes feel the pinch, especially during the winter months.

This year with a little luck we could have a shorter winter, seeing as how November is almost over. Maybe we will get an early spring.

Don’t over run your furnace! I see people increase the temperature on the thermostat to a ridiculous setting like 80F and the house sits at 65F.. you do realize that you will over work the furnace trying to reach that 80F temp. First mistake a lot of people do. Such a waste.

Yes, in a lot of ways it is more expensive to live in the North and people complain about it costing lots to live in Van. Well, like Palopu just stated it sure costs a lot living here in the winter and summer for gas if you are living out of town and have to get in everyday.

Properly installed and maintained, a furnace will not “over work” It is designed to operate safely and near continuously at a given firing rate.
Your fuel and electric bills may “over run” however.
metalman.

Enjoy paying the carbon tax on that increased gas bill. How is that scam working out anyhow? I suppose the rent seeker scientist’s up at the uni are keeping their wallets stuffed promoting the scam.

Hey it’s chiily out. Guess it could be colder, ha ha.

Monday night all 50 states had below freezing temperatures. Early for that to happen. Now if the temperatures where all above normal the rentseekers would jumping up and down yelling the world is burning send more billions for studies. Warming is climate change, cooling is just, well, weather

Kinda, sorta, in a teeny tiny way miss seeing BeingHuman, aka Peeps constant rants about global warming! ;-)
