Grewal Officially Out of the Race

Wednesday, November 19, 2014 @ 11:37 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Prince George businessman, T.J. Grewal is now, officially, out of the race for the  conservative  candidate nomination for the riding of  Cariboo-Prince George.grewalsmall

“I am very disappointed that this has happened” says Grewal, who  was considered not eligible to run because, according to the  rules,  a candidate must have been a member for  6 months  in order to be  eligible to run.  With the nomination  period closing on the 13th  of November,  Grewal’s membership fell  short by about a week.

Grewal  launched an appeal , asking the Party to waive  that condition because he had been a member  previously, and had served  on the  executive  of the  riding association in the past.  The ruling from the Party came back “denied”.

Grewal  says the   rule (3, a, iii of the Conservative Party’s Candidate Nomination Rules and Procedures)  has been waived in the past and points to the recent  case  where  Pat Perkins, the former Mayor of Whitby Ontario  was  allowed to  seek the candidacy  despite  the short term of her membership.  The rule states: The Applicant must have been a member of the Party for at least six (6) months prior to filing his or her application. A waiver will not be required if the applicant has held a membership in the party within the past six (6) months and has renewed their membership prior to submitting their application

Perkins told the CBC   her membership was not a new one that it had simply lapsed, and she renewed it within the acceptable time limit to make herself eligible.  Perkins would go on to win the riding for the Conservatives in a by-election this week.

As for Grewal, his attempt to  launch an appeal of the Party’s ruling  was  also denied,  as the  Party advised there was no avenue for  appealing a decision.

While it is the Party which sets the dates for nomination periods, Grewal questions if  there may have been local influence in that decision  “It’s just a one  week difference, and knowing the 20th  tomorrow  would be my 6 months,  did the application get moved back one week?”  He says the local riding association would have access to the membership list, and would know who and when people signed up.

Grewal may not be on the nomination ballot, but still wields a lot of power.   With an estimated 1500 memberships  to submit,  he  could very well have the power to  say who does, or doesn’t  get the nomination by advising his supporters on where they should take their  vote “I will have the ability to help send the right candidate to Ottawa.”

“I will be speaking with my supporters who have helped me along the way, this weekend,  and  let them know what’s  happened,  and then we will be deciding on who we will be supporting.”

The nomination meeting is expected to take place in Prince George in mid December.

The official  removal of T.J. Grewal  from the nomination  ballot  will leave just three candidates on the ballot,  Todd Doherty, Nick Fedorkiw and Shari Green.

Don’t support green.. Doherty is the best choice..

They way green and friends have bullied their way onto the ballot is disgusting.

And then there were three…
I’m another vote for Doherty.

I was leaning for Fedorkiw. I specifically joined however to vote against Green.

Personally I would support Green to ensure that this riding does not elect a Conservative candidate….

All three of the remaining candidates creep me out.

Rayban, I see your point. I’m definitely not a conservative. But I don’t have enough faith that our region won’t blindly vote in a conservative. Dick Harris was allowed to sit in office for 21 years without doing anything. I took out a membership to vote against Green. I will not be a vote for the conservatives come election day.

History can be instructive. For years, Alberta MLAs have been selected at the PC nomination meetings as it was a guaranteed route to being elected to the provincial legislature with the continued domination by the PC party at the provincial election level. The provincial executive learned the hard way that the general membership figured this out quickly and therefore the nomination meetings became a power struggle between the left leaning (Red Tories) and the right leaning (Reformer types). The party power brokers learned to control the nomination meeting otherwise they might find themselves swept out by a shift in the membership.

Jump ahead 20-40 years. Prime Minister Harper (a Alberta based Reformer right leaning demigod) is loosing his grip on his power base and therefore using the lessons learned all those years ago to control his remaining power base.

Ergo, out with Grewal as he would be more open minded to change and in with Green as she is a proven puppet.

NO ON GREEN
ANYBODY BUT GREEN
A RAT IS BETTER THEN GREEN

Someone that will do what she is told to do by her supporters, not her constituency. So…Bob Zimmer south.

I find it hard to believe the conservatives would shoot themselves in the foot by supporting Green’s run.

Shari green is a puppet.. She was as mayor.. She will sell her soul to the devil and sell us out as well.

The nomination has been rigged from the beginning. They want Green and they don’t care who our riding wants. I would guess that they will allow one token candidate to run against her to make it appear as if it is a fair fight. No matter who wins the nomination it will be Green at the end. Todd or Nick will be offered something to go quietly away. Dirty politics at its best.

I’m very sorry to hear that Mr. Grewal was not accepted. I’ve met him on a number of occasions and was very impressed with his business skill and commitment to the community.
As I’ve stated before many times, Green and her friends need to run and hide from the reign of terror they have inflicted on many over the last 6 years. Disgusting! I would be simply horrified if she won this nomination. Our new Mayor and council deserve better partners at the table as well, so we can all move in a more positive direction. My vote and my wife’s vote will go to Todd Doherty, he’s smart, charismatic and a hard worker with a heart of gold! We all deserve better people representing us on all levels of government.

Who is heading Todd’s campaign for nomination? Haven’t heard much while Nick has been very active. Should Green be the one left standing, suggest Liberals or NDP can find almost anyone to run that will win. Many conservatives simply won’t vote for Green regardless of her representing that party

I hope Grewel issues a public statement and endorsement of another candidate.

How soon we forget…..some of the BID buddies were involved in the Haldi Road treatment centre fiasco. All dirty politics with deep pockets !

I wonder how long that post made at 1:41pm will remain? Lol!

    The post has been removed.

If people are convinced that this nomination process is somehow compromised, would you still support the party that the eventual nominee will represent? Where do you draw the line between a compromised local process and a compromised local process that has the support of the national body?

I’m not writing this to turn into a political discussion, I’m legitimately interested in what people think on that point.

The way I see it is the same as the Mayor race. Lyn was about the people and he got in. Shari is about Shari, Nick will once he gets in be gone and we will never see him again. Todd has always been about our region and he be here after the election.

So I vote for the person that most of us will be able to talk to at some point. Todd Doherty. Unfortunately, Nick is a good guy but he has no reason to come back and be part of our region. He seems to have only come back to PG to get voted in to the party. Todd has a reason to stay here a business, friends, family and not just parents. Sorry Nick but it is true. Unfortunately Nick will likely split the vote and Shari will likely get in.

Best of luck Todd.

the 1:41 post is the truth. Never been a conservative before but signed up and I didn’t do it to support Green. I am sure that Mr. Smith is in the background somewhere.

Mr.T.J.Grewal if you have ever met Mr. Nick Fedorkiw and I’m sure you have or his late father and his mother and brother and sister and checked his background all through his school and education up to and university and work history after graduating you would find that you and your supporters would find him to be the best choice of the candidates that are able to run and do the same type of job that you would if given the opportunity.
Do this and you will see he is the best person that can run at this time and represent us going forward. No big dollars behind him just the support of the common folk.
Thanks for listening

Yes, oneup482 my best guess is… that foul odour in the air is no longer the pulp mills, its most likely Marshall Smith back in PG to run Shari Greens nomination campaign.

Grewal never had the support of the Sikh Community. His ego is way too big. he never gave to the community. he only took from his community

LOL. ego that’s to funny Green has an ego that would black out the sun. Mr Grewal has given a lot to the city, try little research

I might not be a Grewal supporter but there is no need to call him down. From what I hear he is very active in his community.

Does anyone support Shari? Just asking. If so why?

Mr Grewal has generously supported sports in PG and not sure what other type organizations. Whether or not he has support of the Sikh community, he must have support somewhere if he has 1500 signatures?

Rumor has it that Green believes she has the majority support. Her handlers must be keeping her out of the city or away from any media.

Best of luck to Nick and Todd. I’ll be naïve and hope no one is making deals with the Green team.

You are absolutely right (on both points) steph100. Only time will tell if TJ can deliver his votes to one candidate in opposition to Green. Don’t be surprised if the national executive overrides the vote if it goes against Green and appoint her anyhow.

Green gets appointed there will be many voting a Liberal or NDP candidate for the first time ever. Those parties would be wise to get a candidate ready as there is sure to be strong voter interest in the anyone but Green campaign.

Vote NDP or Liberal Problem solved.
Cheers

If it is true that Grewal does not have the support of the Sikh community, is that necessarily a strike against him? Perhaps he has focussed on things other than his own ethnic group, or is not considered a suitable leader since he is not khalsa?

My vote is for Nick Fedorkiw. He is very well educated. He has experience and contacts with the federal government. He loves this town. He comes from a wonderful family. Did I mention he loves this town. He supports mining and economic growth. It’s a no brainer. Vote for Nick!

A word of caution or a question. what if all the Libs. & NDP take out a cooserv. membership $ vote Green in, that would give 1 of them a garauntee to get in on the next election. Or am I out to lunch. Just asking.

PGGUY. It seems pretty obvious that the only interest that Nick has in this nomination process is to split the vote, so that Green can get the nomination. (See Stalking Horse)

No one really wants to see Green get the nod, however unless you join the party and vote against her, she has a good chance.

If someone decides to run as an Independent, they would certainly get my vote.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

How interesting is this? Please note the names on the local PC executive list below. Who didn’t want Grewal to make his 6 months? Some odor coming from this for sure! IF Grewal was a threat, then lets just move the meeting back a week and remove him from the race. Just sayin.

From the lead story above;
“While it is the Party which sets the dates for nomination periods, Grewal questions if there may have been local influence in that decision “It’s just a one week difference, and knowing the 20th tomorrow would be my 6 months, did the application get moved back one week?” He says the local riding association would have access to the membership list, and would know who and when people signed up”.

From the PG Free Press May 29, 2014;

Green is now on the executive, as is Cameron Stolz, who is her muscle at the city council table and who is the new constituency association president. Stolz, one might remember, sought the Prince George-Peace River Conservative nomination that Bob Zimmer eventually won.

The Conservative riding association executive contains several people who staunchly supported Green in her bid for mayor three years ago. Not surprisingly, her husband Chuck Walls is now on the executive. As is Craig Wood, who, along with Wood Wheaton, owns the property that the Northern Supportive Recovery Centre is slated to be built on … Haldi Road. Tom Sentes, also of Wood Wheaton, is on the executive.

Some other notable names now on the Conservative executive include Janine North, of Northern Development Initiative Trust; Carla Johnston of the Downtown Business Improvement Association and who worked with Green when the mayor was a member of the downtown group; Denise McLeod, whose husband, Rod, is one of the principals in developing the new Delta Hotel downtown; and Ken Sands, who was Green’s official campaign manager when she ran for mayor.

A little stinky or what?

@palopu Nick is in it to win it, 100%. He would never be in it to split the vote with Shari.

@pgguyy
Check your facts – Nick moved back to Prince George BEFORE Todd did, so you can’t say Nick moved back just for the race. A reason to stay in PG? I cringed when I read your note on family; you can’t assume other peoples’ values are the same as yours.

I’ve spoken with both Todd & Nick. I’ve checked my facts.

Stinky, indeed.

Rare sense..great post.. And we wonder why we don’t trust the politicians anymore.. Green is the definition of Slime
