Your Distracted Driving Could Impact Your Job

Tuesday, November 25, 2014 @ 1:52 PM

Prince George, B.C.-Ever text or  talk on  your cell while driving  your company’s vehicle?

That is something  you  might want to think twice about  as the Prince George RCMP Community Policing Unit is  teaming  up with  WorkSafeBC to  prevent road related  injuries linked to speeding or  distracted driving.

Community Policing will be  providing  vehicle information  to WorkSafeBC on  vehicles  in which Community Policing  volunteers have spotted a driver violating the BC Motor Vehicle Act.  A  warning letter will be sent to the manager  or owner of the business, and  WorkSafe BC will get a  copy of that letter, advising them of the infraction as well.

It will then be up to WorkSafe to decide if further action would be taken.

In the month of October, Citizens on Patrol observed drivers of 62 vehicles committing motor vehicle act infractions during speed and distracted driving operations. So far during the month of November, 135 infractions have been observed.

Let me get this straight. “Community policing”, ie people who aren’t the actual police, can now contact your employer if they don’t like how you drive? This thing has lawsuit written all over it.

Just drive within the law and you don’t have to worry about it.

Now we need a Citizens on Patrol to observed the Citizens on Patrol who more than likely also break the law.

What’s next? Volunteers following people at their jobs documenting every second of their workday.. People watching doctors operations looking for errors.. Etc.. Slippery slope

Must some very lonely people out there with too much time on their hands in order to come up with such loony ideas, this is reminisce to the Nazi SS , soon no one is going to trust anyone.

you guys might want to find out just what Citizen’s on Patrol is and really does before hanging them all….

no I am not one, nor do I have one in the family.
I do know who and what they are….

These folks are your neighbor, friend, and they’re volunteering in community policing, what a great bunch of people! Giving their time to help keep us safe and maybe lowering some insurance rates.
If you haven’t already, go visit the community policing office, find out what else they do, before dumping on them.
I see some fool in a company vehicle texting or talking on a cell phone, I don’t use that company.
If these folks can deter drivers from screwing up, great, I’m all for it.
Don’t see any lawsuits in this at all.

Why the big deal? It is illegal to be using a phone while driving. Good on them for being proactive and starting this.

You people who agree with this, should re-read the above story there is far, far, more being planed here ,cell phones use is only a small part of what is going to be reported, and as stated these are your neighbours and friends who are taking on the role of big brother here.

WorkSafe should focus their attention on the cases they already have and reach some conclusion with them rather than taking on more projects

We need these people to follow around our politicians and report what they do on a daily basis… They waste so much time and money its criminal.

I agree that WorkSafe BC has lots to do without getting into this fiasco.

As a matter of interest, is it possible that the Police, or Community Policing could give us some indication of how many business drivers, have been caught driving while distracted. Can the Police not send a letter to the business owner when they write a ticket to an individual who is driving distracted with a Company vehicle.??

Are we to believe that a report from some Cops on Patrol, would be accepted verbatim by his employer???

Where is the basic presumption of innocence until proven guilty? Have these people been deputized??

It is within the realm of possibility that other citizens will start to follow and watch the Community Police, or COP’S, and report them if they find them driving while distracted, or impaired, or speeding, etc;

Do we really want a group of civilians spying on citizens??

I believe that the Community Police should come under the Fire Department. The Firemen can be deputized, or made into auxiliary police, and they can patrol and report as part of their job, while they are waiting for a fire. Much better them, than a bunch of volunteers.

So will one get to appeal? How would this citizen reporting a citizen stand up in court?

Truckers have to constantly be having to use their 2 way radios to communicate with one another and others, is the league of big brothers going to inadvertently turn in these people who are only safely carrying out their jobs. This whole thing is a bad idea.

For those of you supporting this action, what if there is an error? This could get ugly if involving ones employer and worksafe. Wonder what a citizen on patrol thinks of going to court?

When I saw other company drivers doing really stupid things, I reported them to the company. Let them deal with it first.

How many companies think it is okay or actually require their employees to do this?

So you haven’t heard of making a Citizens arrest Axman? Actually it isn’t recommended but reporting law breakers to police is. So good luck with any lawsuit and just maybe these citizens will take a photo of these morons so there will be no doubt that they are breaking the law. It is really easy taking pictures of these idiots because they are so blind to their surroundings they don’t know what is actually happening. So snap away but get your passenger to do it or stand at any given intersection or fast food drive thru to catch them in the act. If you are questioned just say you are making a citizens arrest and then call police!

Bottom line, stop yakking on your cell phone while driving. You are not that important that it’s ok to endanger others.

Some brain dead did not give this much thought.

If you are driving a clearly marked company vehicle then you’d better be on your best behaviour. You represent the company or business while you are in public. That means obeying the rules of the road as well as not being an idiot out of the vehicle.

WorkSafeBC is inept!

What makes WorkSafeBC think that someones employer will give a rats behind what their employee is doing while driving? More likely than not, the employer is doing the same thing.

“So you haven’t heard of making a Citizens arrest Axman?”

There is no arrest being made here. All you have here is some old busybody with far to much time on his hands writing letters to employers stating that he allegedly saw an employee breaking a law.

I’ll think of this article and some of the stupid comments next time (only once so far )I’m stuck at a native blockade on a public road. I phoned the cops all right and you all know they didn’t, and won’t clear the road.

Regardless of some of the ridiculous comments written above, at least this will hopefully bring about more public awareness that it’s against the law to be holding a cell phone while driving. I can’t believe how many drivers I have seen lately disregarding this.

lbear said in part, I can’t believe how many drivers I have seen lately disregarding this.
Question for you lbear ,the drivers you mention were they in private vehicles or commercial vehicles? You imply that some of the previous comments are ridiculous in your view, but I suspect that you have may have have made a off the wall comment, as it’s very clear that the story line says “Prince George, B.C.-Ever text or talk on your cell while driving your company’s vehicle?”

Why try to get people fired?? Shouldn’t the police just give them a ticket and make them pay the fines?

I think this is going a little too far, amateurs accusing drivers of an offence and putting their employment in jeopardy.

Is this our first step on a slippery slope towards this type of society— (The Gestapo, or secret state police played a key role in the terror and control of German citizens. With the ability to rely on a network of informers and enjoying the power to arrest and imprison without trial, the Gestapo had a significant influence on the Nazi state.)
Keep in mind how our draconian gun laws got started and to where they are now.
