Child Poverty Having an Effect in the Classroom says Union Boss
Prince George, B.C. – Child poverty is having a major impact in northern classrooms.
That was a concern raised by Prince George & District Teachers Association president Tina Cousins at tonight’s school board meeting.
She was reacting to a report card issued yesterday by the First Call Coalition which indicated 1 in 5 BC children are living in poverty.
“I hear stories about kids screaming in the classroom. Of equipment being thrown. These are just some of the effects of child poverty.”
She says more counsellors and teacher assistants will be necessary to deal with the issue because of the stress it places on teachers.
“When we have vulnerable students in class it’s a burden on the teacher. The concerns these students create are scary. Screaming creates anxiety.”
Moving forward Cousins said she’s hopeful the board will work with teachers to address the issue and ensure safety in all classrooms.

Didn’t the libs promise to do something about child poverty once upon a time? Oh thats right, it was an election promise.
Perhaps if we were to stop spending so much money on our over bloated, over paid and under worked publicly funded “work” force, we would have enough money to address these social issues.
We could start with major cuts to our local governments (50 million in salaries for the city of Prince George alone!) and work our way up to other top heavy bureaucracies such as Northern Health. There’s lots of public cash out there, they just spend on vote buying rather then on making the province a better place.
Yes ! It was Chrispie Clark who was all about famlies , did she indeed mean “let them starve ” .BC will pay for the lack of jobs , crime , and the government rip off called taxes . Food prices are out of reach , rent is way to high , if you are on a low income $10. an hour , OSA or disability you don’t stand a chance .
Newsflash!! Tina Cousins announces water is too wet and the sky is blue, and it would make things easier for her lemmings to teach if parents would just keep their brats at home.
