Ice oval opened Saturday -photo Douglas Waller
Prince George, B.C. – Well that didn’t last long.
The ice oval, on the west side of the CN and Kin Centres, officially opened on Saturday. The ice was in great shape what with that cold snap that sank the City into a deep freeze.
Well, the cold snap, snapped.
The warm temps yesterday have turned that glossy surface to mush, so the ice oval is closed for now. We will pass along the details when the oval reopens.

Are the winter games people ready to truck in snow?
or do they not have a back up plan?
it wouldn’t surprise me…..
maybe city hall will allow thenm , at out cost of course, to install refrigeration systems in the fine name of the Winter Geames…it seems that name has an endless unlimited budget!

As far as the Ice Oval is concerned, trucking in snow will not do anything. Cold temperatures are needed. There is a backup plan that has been well documented and is on the CWG website at

As far as refrigeration goes, it is a considerable expense – almost $2 million – that was not budgeted for. This is the reason for the contingency plan outlined in the link above.
Interestingly enough, the city of Halifax put in a ‘temporary’ refrigerated oval for the last CWG…the residents loved it and used it so much that it remains. Quite a legacy to the residents of that fine coastal city.
Thank you.

– They are going to the Ft St John indoor oval if no snow here. They have already cancelled the half pipe event at Tabor.. probably the biggest draw for the kids.
so the games are promoted as in PG and actually they aren’t…
FIGURES.
That’s what she said…
(Someone had to!)
