Flouridation No More in 2015

Monday, December 15, 2014 @ 6:59 PM

fluoridePrince George, B.C.- When 2014 comes to a close,  so will the practice of adding fluoride to the  water supply in the City of Prince George.

Council for the City of Prince George has voted unanimously  in favour  of  ending the practice ,  honouring the results  of the referendum that was  part of the most recent  municipal election.

“Whether I agree with  it  or not,   this is a democracy and  I will stick with my  promise to honour the results.” says Councillor Brian Skakun.

Councillor Garth Frizzell  read a detailed  statement about why  he would support the recommendation, the bottom line being,  he  doesn’t like the outcome of the referendum, but will vote to enact it.

Susan Scott, pointing to  Councillor Garth Frizzell said  “Sort of what he said but a little less words.”

Councillor Murry Krause, “I too will support the will of the electorate.”  He says while he knows the dental and medical community will be disappointed  he would  support the recommendation to  end the practice of fluoridating water by  the end of this year.

Councillor Jillian Merrick says she supports the  removal of fluoride,  because she supports the  public’s right to  consent to what  they do or don’t put in their bodies.

Councillor Koehler and  McConnachie also supported the  enforcement of the  referendum.

Councillor Koehler  wanted to pass a motion to have the  storage tanks and equipment removed ,  but  Director of Public Works Bill Gaal says that would happen  anyway so there would be no  need for a motion.

Sad. It says something about our city that we will take the word of conspiracy theorists and YouTubers over that of medical researchers and health care professionals. Particularly with the results coming out of Calgary as a result of their experiment with pseudoscience. Embarrassing.

I still struggle when the rights of one group can override the rights of others. In this case, force me to ingest fluoride against my will.

Those who want fluoride can still add it to their water and it won’t affect me at all. That is how I see it.

I am pleased that all those folks elected are honouring the outcome of the referendum whether they agreed or not.

Good start with a new council.

Finally! Good to see the politicians are listening to the electorate.

xha44a: The study in Calgary was not definitive. There only ‘seems’ to be a correlation or an indication of a seeming correlation. Nothing definite at all.
The same thing is true with all the other studies, nothing definitely for or against it.

BYOB. You might want to see what chemicals (radiation) etc; are put on the vegetables that you eat. Ie Banana’s, Potatoes, Tomatoes, Apples etc: Also you might want to check what goes in the making of the cans, and the linings for canned goods, and of course soft drinks, and alcohol. Not to mention the pollution you ingest every day from yours and other peoples vehicles. All these chemicals are being put into your body without your knowledge, and presumably against your will.

Your argument against being forced to ingest fluoride is weak to say the least.

I believe that now that the referendum is over, those who were in favour of keeping fluoride in water will let the issue rest. I will guarantee you that had those that were against fluoridation lost, we would still be subjected to their constant barrage of garbage about the evils of fluoridation. It is well worth losing the referendum, just to kill the discussion.

You might now want to start a discussion and eventually get a referendum on the evils of marijuana and the damage it does to your brain, body, etc:.

If the dentists are sad to see fluoride go, does that imply that fluoride was good for business?

So, what happens to the workers who were tasked with keeping the fluoride flowing? Do we just keep them on the payroll because we’ve got deep pockets?

they are now in charge of how much salt is mixed in with the sand. What am I going to do now that my car is going to rust and fall apart ?

Sorry, they should have read They.

Palopu

Ever consider becoming a comedian..

GO swing from the trees

I would have to see you do it first ice, lighten up:)

Palupo says “It is well worth losing the referendum, just to kill the discussion.”

I couldn’t agree more.
Although comparing it to marijuana might create hours of entertainment while the dope smokers try to justify that habit lol!

I think Palopu is not a good loser.

I want to find a tin mine. Gonna make millions.

come on people, we all had a chance to vote for or against… and a majority voted “NO” so our council are giving the majority the nod,
isn’t that what our country is all about?

So city council is in trouble because they listen, and people have been whining that council doesn’t listen and now they do, people are whining…

make up your minds.

We don’t have to like it, but that is the way… had there not been a referendum, I could see the complaints.

You guys do realize this is all just grandstanding and showboating on the new council’s part? Do you honestly think they’re going to follow the people’s wishes when it comes to the big issues? We don’t want our taxes raised any more, please and thank you; we want fiscal responsibility. Do you think that’s going to happen? Not bloody likely with the union shills that got elected.

axman. It had better happen. Hopefully they will find savings in other area’s to fund increases for wages and benefits, for a few years, and then freeze increases.

I’m all for giving this council a chance at their jobs. OK so we got burned many times before and I’m not saying it won’t happen again but for god sakes give these people a chance.. it hasn’t even been a month yet since council took over and the complainers are already starting. Taxes are going to be raised whether YOU or I like it or not. That’s a given fact of city living and if you’re not used to it by now well that’s your issue.

@sunnyday sure glad to get that bleach taste out of the water hey? @bcracer there is your informed choice at work in PGi

@ axeman sorry but machines did the work, city workers didn’t do anything except fill it and let it do it’s work which takes all of about an hour. Our fluoride system was down for a couple years in the 2000s and no one noticed except northern health, go figure

” Taxes are going to be raised whether YOU or I like it or not. That’s a given fact of city living and if you’re not used to it by now well that’s your issue.”

Fiscal irresponsibility and an over bloated and under worked civil service are a given fact as well, but, there is absolutely no reason for us to just roll over and get “used to it”. The City is currently spending 50 million dollars a year on salaries; that is absolutely astounding.

We can look back on it as taking the advice of Dave Fuller of Ave Maria over people like Dr. Osei and the rest of the medical community.

What an embarrassment.

The people who voted to remove fluoride should volunteer to pay the extra dental costs that are coming down the road as well.

What are the chances of that happening, I asked innocently?

The people have spoken. Mercury, arsenic. lead and fluoride are developmental neurotoxins, according to 21st century science. Nobody in their right mind would advocate adding either mercury, arsenic or lead to drinking water, so how can adding the neurotoxin fluoride to tap water be justified?

JB, give it a rest and stop being a sore loser.

Ok yes I agree the wages are ridiculous but what city doesn’t pay out a fortune to its employees? I think tides would turn if many of us worked for the city. Let’s compare Kamloops to PG since the two cities are similar in size. In 2012 Kamloops spent $52.7 million on salaries. On par with what PG dishes out to its staff. We live in a money paced world and everyone and I mean everyone wants to make money. Really this isn’t new and has been around since oh 2009. So I say get used to it because honestly it’s not going to change anytime soon.

If Northern Health does their job tooth decay should go down. It’s about education now not force feeding us non human grade fluoride.

A bigger cost on our Heath JB is smoking maybe go bark up that tree! ;)

PG: “JB, give it a rest and stop being a sore loser.”

The removal of fluoridation won’t affect me. I have access to good dental care. Not everyone can say the same thing. They will be the biggest losers in this short sighted decision.

Was there ever a study done comparing areas of PG and communities around PG without fluoridation with those that do? Interesting that only 3% of BC population have fluoride in the drinking water.

Princegeorge lots of arsenic in some types of rice.

What you won’t hear from those who constantly trot out that 97% figure is that many BC communities have natural levels of fluoride in their water, so they don’t need to add any.

JB you have to do what agrees with your own truth and understanding. We are all right or wrong.

It just appears that this time the majority is with the majority of the world. I to lean towards the views of Europe where usage is low and dropping. The US & Australia are big pushers.

Lets be fair the truth is not clear, all information has a bias. The floride debate is very polarized and that spells higher bias. The entrenched absolute views that appear here scream bias. The decision is black or white but the information provided by all is not. When a decision is not clear I tend to proceed with caution.

Garth really broke out the sad violins for his performance. He sould do less of that.

monkey: “JB you have to do what agrees with your own truth and understanding.”

My understanding simply aligns with the world’s medical organizations and the decades of study of the benefits. The fluoride debate is about a growing segment of the population that seems to have a general distrust of the medical profession based on their own biases. This is why there’s a growing anti-vaccine movement and other such things… we are going to end up being our own worst enemy as long eliminated diseases and conditions make a comeback. It’s too bad.

If we can trust the worlds medical professionals on this issue, then it stands to reason that we can trust the worlds scientific community when it comes to the causes and impacts of climate change ;)

Exactly, NMG.

I guess that is why I make up my own mind regaurdless of who it is comming from. I have been reliant on the medical community and companies for decades because of a medical condition to keep me alive and it is clear that my health is not the only thing they have in mind. If you believe the medical community is an all knowing unbiased entity, you are a fool. If it was the case we would be decades ahead in the way we treat or cure many conditions.

Thanks monkey, you proved my point exactly.

Sweeping generalizations and biased opinions aside, I would like to applaud Councillor Frizzell on his well thought out comments at the meeting last night. I think it showed a great level of respect to the referendum process and the will of the majority of those who voted, but also to the people who elected him into the position knowing his stance on the issue.

I would like to remind those who are already being critical of this council that they were voted in, just as this referendum was voted in. To praise one and immediately be critical of the other is counterproductive. While they should be help accountable I do believe that in our election, the will of the people has been expressed and that they should do their job as they best see fit. Constant referendums and consultations do not make for an efficient government and will not allow our elected leaders to perform their duties to the city as best as they can.

Im just not partial to sad violins. I like Garth ;-). I can honestly say I like all of the new council.
