Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George’s “Food for Fare” food drive was a success this year bringing in 500 pounds of food, about the same as last year.

The program allowed transit users in the city the option of donating non-perishable food items rather than paying bus fare.

Mayor Lyn Hall, city councillor Jillian Merrick, and transit manager Dave Bradshaw dropped the donations off at the Salvation Army this morning.

“It feels good to give this time of year,” says Mayor Hall.

“But we also need to remember that the Salvation Army and other organizations that provide these kind of services to the community need donations year round. It’s just this time of year people are really in the giving mood. But yes, it was good to come by today.”

Councillor Merrick agrees adding “as a regular bus user it was really nice and exciting to get up in the morning and bring something out of my pantry to share as my bus fare.”

Captain Neil Wilkinson says he’s thankful for the donations as the need from the community continues to grow each year.

“We’re recognizing consistently year after year between a 12% to 15% increase in food bank usage. 1,200 families each and every month access our services and unfortunately hunger knows no season.”
