Soft Deadline to Volunteer for Winter Games Approaches

Tuesday, December 30, 2014 @ 3:55 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Today is the last day to sign up in person at the  Accreditation and Volunteer Centre for the Canada Winter Games, or at least this is the ‘soft’ deadline to sign up.

The office, which is suite 205 at 1302 – 7th Avenue, is open from noon until  8 p.m. today.  The office is closed tomorrow,  but you may be able to  sneak a registration in online by clicking here.
As Manager of the Games volunteer work force Christine Nicholls told 250News recently, the  December 31st  deadline was a ‘soft’ deadline,  that  they will continue to accept  volunteers as long as there are spots that need to be filled.

There are bonuses to becoming a volunteer, including a clothing package  that  will give the volunteer a  winter coat, toque, long sleeved t-shirt .

To qualify,  you have to be at least 15 years of age, commit to 36 hours of  service time,  and if you really want one of the plum postings,  have a criminal record check done.

Since  landing the Games, the Society has always said it wanted to  recruit  about 4500 volunteers.  That would  ensure there would be more than enough  to cover the necessary duties and give the Games organizers a bit of a cushion  in the event  some who had  already signed up  were not able to fulfill their duties.

What is a ‘soft deadline’? That’s kind of like no deadline. They say they will continue to accept volunteers for spots that need to be filled. What was the point of this story again?

The one question never asked, or answered, about volunteer services is this, should a person be injured while providing volunteer services, are they covered by any form of insurance? Sadly most organizations requiring volunteers rarely have any insurance to protect those who offer there assistance to these organizations.

We volunteer for so many things but we rarely ask if our butts are covered if something happens to us during our rendering of volunteer services. It needs to be answered and addressed, many folks out of the kindness of there hearts give time to so many groups. But if you get hurt and there is no coverage for an accident or occurrence you are out in more ways than just being hurt. In this day and age it’s a point that needs to be considered before lending a hand as a volunteer.

Just something to consider.

It’s quite simple, actually. When you agree to sign up, you agree to the organizations terms and conditions, namely that volunteers are expected to do so at their own risk.
