Prep for The Polar Dip

Sunday, December 28, 2014 @ 5:06 AM

Prince George, B.C. – There are only a few days left to  collect pledges and  put together a costume that is  just right for the annual polar dip at the Ness Lake Bible camp.polardip14

The annual event is a fundraiser for the Ness Lake Camper Sponsorship program.

Having a great costume could mean  winning a prize as local  businesses have  contributed prizes for the top fundraiser and the best costume.

The event  gets underway  for  participants  around 2, when they  are  asked to meet in the gym for  pre-dip ceremonies . Costume judging is set  to start at 2:30.

Depending on ice thickness,   either a hole will be cut into  the ice,  or  cleared  from the shoreline to allow for  dippers to ‘wade’ in.

Emergency personnel will be on scene to ensure everyone has a safe dip.

Afterwards,  everyone, dippers and spectators alike, are welcome to sip a hot chocolate and enjoy a cinnamon bun.

Pledge forms are available here.

In my opinion, this is a very foolish tradition. Just waiting for the day some poor schmuck has a heart attack doing this.

Well sine, hunting is seen by some as a foolish tradition and more people die from it a year than jumping in a frozen lake but people still hunt ;)

Actually driving to the event is more dangerous. So people better just stay at home and get fat

pval where did these stats come from or just rhetoric/ hearsay?

Yup, Sine’s got it right. One day, this will go the way of Sandblast for kind of the same reason.

Did this years ago, always a fun event, and no, doesn’t give you heart attacks, it’s called living good! Lotsa people on the coast do this every day, summer or winter, it’s a healthy shock.

What would make it better is to have a large sauna at the edge of the lake

Don’t forget the hot tub!

Poor diet, lack of exercise, stress and other life style choices are more likely to contribute to the conditions for a heart attack … Why do we always point to a single event (snow shoveling for example) as the cause? … and yet no name and JB are right, some one will have one at the event some day (severe cold does stress the heart) and that will be the end of another tradition.

Sine.. The off gassing of the plastic bubble wrap you have wrapped yourself in is more hazardous than a bunch of kids diving in sub zero water..
