FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL – Jan. 2, 2015
Thursday, January 1, 2015 @ 11:59 PM
Here it is, the first Friday of a New Year.
While it may be a new year, there is something that hasn’t changed, your weekly opportunity to speak up on issues that matter to you.
It is time for the Friday Free For All.
You pick the topic, but please, let’s start the new year off right and work extra hard to obey the three simple rules:
Keep it clean
Keep it legal
NO BULLYING
Comments
Happy New Year everyone!
Don’t drink and drive.. Have a safe and enjoyable 2015
I’d like to know others thoughts on a neighbour that snow blows all his snow in my front yard. He rarely blows any snow on his own grass. The rest of us have to move our snow from one side of the driveway to the other to put it on our own grass. I have never lived next to someone who does this. Is this acceptable in Prince George?
I was on foothills yesterday during the height of the freezing rain and I was doing way under the prescribed speed limit and so many vehicles were passing me at higher than posted speed limits and several of them ended up in the ditch. I pulled over at 3 of the accidents to see if everyone was alright everybody was ok but 2 of the three drivers were adamant that it was the cities and highways departments fault for not keeping the roads clear and were quite angry about it. I mentioned to one driver that he was going very fast for road conditions and he said what the hell has that got to do with it.
Too many drivers still feel that they have the right to drive and a sense of entitlement and this driver was one of them and when he asked me to pull him out of the ditch I asked him if he had a cell phone which he said yes I told him to use it and call a tow truck. He had several unkind words for me as I was leaving he definitely felt he was not at fault for going in the ditch.
Good one Dearth, I’m still laughing.
I was driving Foothills yesterday and some selfish driver was going way under the speed limit to deliberately cause accidents. Slow drivers are a menace and, if they can’t handle the roads, they should stay off the road.
Dearth is right. I sure hope Whirly Girl is joking.
To add a detail, if you’ve got studs, make sure to have enough weight over the rear axle to push them down into the ice.
Disrupting the natural traffic flow is more of an issue than speed alone. On Foothills between 1st Ave. and Chief Lake RD the traffic flows ~90kph if left alone by law enforcement and old curmudgeons making a self righteous statement. Remember, nobody moves nobody get hurts!
Under normal circumstances Whirly Girl is bang on.
Apparently it even flows at 90 in freezing rain. The body shops must love it though.
Whirly Girl – I was walking my dog last night, and I sure couldn’t go the usual pace. Does that make me “selfish” or just some one who doesn’t want to fall and break any bones?
What has happened to tolerance and respect in our society?
Anybody on here make any positive resolutions for the New Year? Are we going to have people constantly bitching about people’s driving habits for another year, or do you think we can find something more positive to say or do that would be more constructive?
My positive comment is that I thoroughly enjoyed attending Cirque de Soleil last night! Amazing talent and a very affordable performance. I plan to take advantage of more of these kind of events, and am also looking forward to hearing more at the Canada Winter Games.
Whirly Girl – go as fast as you want. Enjoy the accidents which were not “your fault” but ICBC somehow decides they are your fault. (I really think you are joking to so am I) I remember when I took Young Drivers training and there was a line that has stuck in my mind for over 30 years:
How many times is it acceptable to have and accident out of 15,000 possible accident situations? (not an exact quote, it was over 30 years ago) The answer shocked me – but I live by it. The answer was 0.
During all these years every time I have come close to having an accident, I can track it back to something I could have done differently. I am not saying something can’t crazy can’t happen because it does, but there is a lot we can do to prevent an accidents.
Ha, ha, Dearth was carefully driving along and a bunch that were in a hurry to get somewhere passed him. Well, THEY ended up in the ditch, thus losing a lot of time and getting nowhere near their intended destinations. Dearth probably made it home safely and in good time, so what does that tell you?
If they banged up their vehicles well, too bad. Just think if they had hit someone else? They might have been injured or worse or someone else may have been.
The road maintenance people can’t be everywhere for everyone at the same time and sometimes weather conditions can overwhelm the best efforts of everyone,
Especially in heavy snowfalls or in freezing rain which can cover any sand that was on the road. Think a little bit!
We are not told to drive according to weather conditions for nothing.
PG Whirly Girl: If you think slower drivers are trying to deliberately cause accidents, I guess your ‘whirly’ acronym is pretty applicable.
They are driving slower so they DON’T have an accident or can prevent getting into one.
If you’ll notice, it isn’t the slower ones who are losing control and sliding into the ditches or into other vehicles.
No wonder scientists are working on making autonomous (self-driving) cars a reality! How frustrating that will be for all the wannabe Michelle and Michael Schumachers at there!
No such things as accidents, they are crashes and crashes are preventable. Have a happy new year everyone.
Prince gearge what happens when the equipment fails? Notice the millions of recalls each year?
I saw cirque last night too. It’s way better than on TV. That trampoline act they do is mind blowing. It’s like the laws of gravity don’t even apply in that place.
Sarcasm alert
I also went skiing at otway and when I was going down the hill some new skier got in my way so I pushed her into the snow bank to get by. I don’t think she got hurt but it’ll teach her to get in the way of us really fast skiers. She should go learn somewhere else. That ski area is just for us good skiers.
2015….Hmmm….as for that fella who when into the ditch….on FH and tried to blame……everyone but himself,ArperH you 2x….Awipe!!
This will be a good year when ArperH no more…time for the Lie’n,thieving, cheating,Illegal gOV.has to go..No suprises in this prov.gave that jerkoff Scambell..A.K.A. bob’s yer drunkel, even after pic of DRUNK…voted this dirtbag back again…No Respect……
I am still having a problem with the BC Liberals plans to give the guide outfitters more of the LEH tags allocated to hunters in this region. Are you aware they plan on raising the guides allocation to 25% of the bull moose tags for this region? Some of us apply for years and years to get drawn, and some people have never been drawn…and they want to give more to the guides so they can sell them to wealthy trophy hunters?? The guides figure it’s OK because we can always hunt spike fork moose [wonder bulls] or go to another area to hunt bull moose that has a general open season.
On top of that I really wonder why the guides even get an allocation on some species like Roosevelt elk on Vancouver Island, or Bison up north, when many thousands of British Columbia hunters never get a chance to hunt these game animals?
If your like me, and think these hunting opportunities should be preserved for some of the 102,000 British Columbia hunters, rather than approximately 3500 clients of the guide outfitters, then go to the BCWF website and sign the petition to try and stop the BC Liberals from taking us more towards a european system where the rich hunt and the poor eat cake!
Speed limits and no smoking signs are meant for stupid people that aren’t capable of figuring it out themselves.
If you are annoyed by speed limits and no smoking signs – congratulations – you are one of those stupid people.
I find it interesting that many commenters on this site are forever criticising the fiberals but when I mention the carbon tax scam they brought in, silence.
We also thoroughly enjoyed the Circe performance last night. Great to see such great shows here in PG. Getting to the venue was another matter, however, as the planning by the organizer (CN Centre) left a lot to desire. There was no traffic control for those trying to get into the limited entry points to the parking lot (some entrances were blocked off), the parking lot was like a skating rink and the walkways were even worse. Once inside the CN Centre, the vending machines were mostly empty and the lines to the concession stands were even longer than usual as a result. When the CN Centre management was asked about these issues, the response was well, it is January 1. IMO that was no surprise to anyone, except perhaps the centre management. This type of poor management will certainly leave a negative impression on those attending with regard to the ability of those in charge to host such an event.
To all those who hate reading about people b–ching about driving, it’s probably best not to click on the Friday Free for All every week and hope for something different.
Happy New Year everyone.
Happy New year to all my friends in PG. It’s a balmy 1c in Abby this am and the kids are all waiting for the snow to start falling.
I have to agree with mytwobits this site seems to have drifted into whiners about different driving habits.
On another topics I enjoyed the story on “Reducing Personal Debt.” seems that’s not just a personal problem it runs through all of our governments as well but when will it stop.
The Federal Government spent 18 billion on the Afghanistan affair and after 12 years the Afghans are back to where they were before the UN entered Afghanistan. The Russians were there for ten years and had to leave after accomplishing nothing.
Maybe in the future we will be able to write cheques and the government would cover them.
Well anyway it’s a new year and I’m struggling for some good ideas so please help me lets find another topic rather then bad drivers there is an abundance of them where ever you go and remember nothing is perfect.
Cheers
1 out of 10 dentists agree that there has been an alarming increase in number of cavities in children since the city of Prince George quit adding wood presevative to the municipal water supply.
I see that matty is seriously off his meds today.
10 out of 10 anti-fluoridationists can’t disseminate information posted on anti-flouride activist sites and blogs vs. peer reviewed scientific evidence quoted from the source.
Johnnybelt I think you missed the point on the fluoridation thing it was kind of about consent to being medicated! the more you point to scientific evidence, you are actually enforcing that it is a valid medication. so as a human in a free and democratic society I should not be forced to take medication for my “teeth?”, and to have it in the water so their is no choice! I am pretty sure fluoride is for teeth not for cooking pasta or washing my feet.
happy new year
“Prince gearge what happens when the equipment fails? Notice the millions of recalls each year?”
Well, if you take the time to check it out you will discover that Google has had a self-driving vehicle on highways and in heavy city traffic for tens of thousands of miles without any malfunction or causing any accidents. The only mishap was a fender bender when a distracted driver ran into it!
WOW, I DECIDED TO RISK MY LIFE AND VENTURE OUT TODAY ……. THE ROADS ARE OUTRIGHT DANGEROUS …. FYI TO THIS CITY, SALT MELTS ICE …… SAND ON TOP OF ICE DOES LITTLE …… CANT WE AFFORD SALT ?
Boudicca: “Johnnybelt I think you missed the point on the fluoridation thing it was kind of about consent to being medicated! the more you point to scientific evidence, you are actually enforcing that it is a valid medication.”
Um, no. But I am not surprised you missed the point.
75% of statistics are made up on the spot..lol
Okay, what’s with people parking their shopping carts in the middle of the isle? To hard to move it over so others can get by? Or just ignorant ? Happens all the time.
PG, if you haven’t seen a cirque show, then get out to CN Centre and check it out. They really are amazing!
Tomorrow we’re supposed to have a low of -13 with 10-15cm of snow, followed by freezing rain and temps up near +10 on Sunday and then a low of -20 on Monday. How’s that for a nice weather swing? LOL.
Saw a lot of careful drivers out there this morning. Good to see.
Dearth, thanks for the laugh.
You probably would have put yourself in danger pulling the guy out anyway.
I’ve seen a dozen static Cirque shows tonight I get to see my first traveling show be interesting to see the differences between the static and traveling shows
Lol-Lol;
I swear SALT is a swear word on this site. Unfortunately another 24 hr window has come and gone. If only the city would have taken advantage, life would be so much easier. I guess they like grading and re-grading the same old roads day in day out.
I see my property valve went up again..Does this mean I have to pay more in land taxes at year end??? Everything is on an up word trend. I wonder what could have caused that???
Very true maverick 1965. Whenever a snowfall is forecasted out here, they pre-salt all the major routes. If I’m not mistaken, they also have some sort of system where the salt is mixed in with some form of liquid to make it adhere to the road surface. Long story short, snow doesn’t build up on the roads that have been pre-salted unless it’s a major dump. It’s a huge part of the road maintenance plan and it makes the clearing a much easier task to manage.
There is a point where it will get too cold for the salt to work, but then the crews switch over to sand and adjust their plan accordingly.
So Prince George you are saying that the Google machine is perfect then, no malfunctions? Are you privy to their testing? Wonder how it would handle these roads?
seamut: Ha, ha, ha. Probably it would park itself!
Jim13136, you couldn’t be more right. Our wildlife and heritage as hunters to provide our families with the best organic protein available has been sold down the river to the highest bidder, namely the GOABC, in backroom deals. There is room for G/Os in this province but their quotas should be in line with Alta. Sask. and a number of NW States at around 5-10% 0f the annual allowable harvest. IMO the species who’s sustainability must rely on LEH draws in certain areas should only be available to resident hunters in those areas. You may not think this matter concerns you but if game animals can be sold to the highest bidder what comes next? Sports fishing, maybe wilderness trecking, or how about just camping. Sign the 2 petitions and help return the province to it’s residents.
NOT YOUR FIGHT?? REMEMBER THESE WORDS
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Hey this is great not to many driver complains.
Cheers

And if that doesn’t work, why not just blow it all back to his place?
Then pistols at 20 paces.
One couldn’t take the chance with a draw, go to a meat cutting place , get some nice big white moose bones ,,, throw them in the snow in the offenders driveway and walla…spends the day fixing instead of snowblowing ,,, should figure it out quickly :)
Hey come on its your neighbour. My neighbour always blew his and shoveled it onto our lawn. what’s the big deal.
What about the Cityn that shoves snow onto your lawn and the road gravel with it.
Cheers
Retired 02 – for once I agree with you ;)
Retired 02, I didn’t get an answer from you yesterday. What’s up with that??
