Council Starts New Year with Light Agenda
Prince George, B.C.- Prince George Mayor and Council will start the New Year with a light agenda, however, the issue of accessibility will be front and center
The Advisory Committee on Accessibility will be presenting several recommendations for Council’s consideration, including putting more capital funding into sidewalk repair and increasing snow removal from sidewalks. The Advisory committee says there are 68 sidewalk issues which need to be addressed.
The Advisory Committee would also like to see a review of all Civic facilities for their accessibility. In particular, the committee is calling for a review of public washrooms and stairways that need to be upgraded to help those with mobility challenges.
The two items would have an impact on the budget for this year.
Also on the agenda for this evening, a request from Branch 45 of the Royal Canadian Legion for support in their call to have the Veterans Affairs office in Prince George re-opened. The office in Prince George was closed in late 2013, another eight were shut down in early 2014 as part of a cost saving measure by the federal Government.
Council will be called upon to give final reading to a couple of bylaws, one which adds more cycling and pedestrian networks to the Official Community Plan, the other will put in place regulations for subdivision development and servicing.
There will be a call to rescind a bylaw that allowed for a piece of land dedicated for road development to be sold . Seems this particular piece of property, adjacent to land owned by the Northern Lights Winery on P.G. Pulpmill Road, needs to have the approval from the Ministry of Transportation because it’s adjacent to an arterial highway. The Ministry has no objection to the sale but a new bylaw, which reflects the Ministry’s approval of the sale, will be have to be approved.

Maybe they could address the snow removal issues? Or just ignore it and hope it goes away. :)
As much as I think veterans affairs should be supported, this is the wrong forum for that plea, unless you want Council to send a letter of support on your behalf. It’s not for municipal politicians to dictate how the feds spend money.
Axman,
Roads I traveled today were awesome. So each to their own i suppose.
roads I have travelled have been to too bad either…icy and slippery but that is to be expected after the rain we got…a little more sand would help for sure at major and of course a lot of minor intersections..so I just drive slower… sorry 4×4’s I don’t care if you are impatient…
I have noticed however that the city is sure wasting resourses on the way they are road clearing…
I made sugestions to them and pretty much all I got what a “HUMPH” over the phone… i think that, loosy translated, means tell someone who cares…
but as long as it gets done and doesn’t stop as soon as the Winter Games is over, (could what we are seeing now be dress rehearsal for the real thing?) and I think it just might, I’ll be happy…
Have and awesome snow filled day all….
bcracer: I’m curious to know what suggestions you made?

2nd Avenue between Queensway and Victoria was well plowed this morning. Too bad nobody uses it. 1st avenue -a well used feeder road- was not well plowed. That pile of snow that the 2 loaders were moving around at Queensway and Patricia was well maintained. Hemlock Street beside the school (spitting distance from where the 2 loaders were playing) is still not plowed even though it’s a school zone.
I’m sure the city hall parking lot was well plowed though.
Hey it looks like the City has a change of mode. Where is Pal give us some input.
Cheers
I expect council to assist Branch 45 of the Royal Canadian Legion by supporting their call to have the Veterans Affairs office in Prince George re-opened. Harper can save money elsewhere, like cutting back a couple of percent on his tens of millions of dollars of gifts to other countries.
that is easy Give more..
one of them was to double up the graders, put down the side blade, and cut back to one front end loader, they can do the whole double lane in one swipe not 4….
I know they are using minimum 3 graders and 3 front end loaders to go down Tabor Blvd. and I have seen them do a minimum of 4 passes to get two lanes done…when one pass with two graders should do it…
but hey I am just a tax payer what do it know?
Axman,
I drive 1st ave and 2nd ave daily.
In regards to 1st Ave – there was nothing wrong with the condition of this road this morning. Anyone with mediocre driving abilities could manage well.
As for 2nd Ave between Queensway and Victoria – Not only is this a bus routem but it is also a road that is travelled by many vehicles daily. Anyone who drives this stretch or spends any time downtown would be aware fo this.

City Council can make the call and offer moral support if they want, but as Sine points out, this is a Federal matter and probably not the right venue for this issue.

Unfortunately, we have way to many people with sub-mediocre driving abilities. 1st Ave is nothing but ruts and snow berms. 2nd Ave -which, again, doesn’t get near the volume that 1st Ave does, was pristine. I guess it’s easy to plow when there’s no traffic around.
Now if only they would ticket and tow that truck that is always illegally parked at 2nd and Victoria.
City council has endorsed many issues that were either global, federal or provincial in scope. Sine has a right to his opinion. Other opinions may be just as valid if the past is taken as a precedent. In any case, Harper has already fired Fantino and giving his replacement the message is as important as ever.
BTW, I recently was reminded that we actually have a Conservative MP by the name of Zimmer. Perhaps Branch 45 should let us know how he has responded to this issue, if at all!

Now you’re on the right track. He is the guy the Legion should be in contact with, at least to start.
The City can endorse the colour of the sky if they want, but like the Veteran’s affairs office, they have about as much power to change it.
This closing of the Veteran’s Affairs offices is a serious matter.
EVERY effort must be made to undo what was done by a poor decision. An
endorsement by the city council will have an added impact. Failing all else a federal election is due this year.
The closing of the VA office was not a poor decision. From what I understand they only received 2 or 3 calls a week. Why would we pay someone to sit there for 40 hours a week?
Axman, first avenue from the bridge to Victoria street is YRB responsibility.

Now now, duffer. Thinking like that is not appreciated around here! ;-)

That’s true, but the rest of the street seems to have been forgotten by everyone.
2 or 3 calls a week translate into 104 to 156 calls per year, depending on the complexity of the issues it could represent quite a work load for a person. Many cases may require investigation and continuous follow up.
so we can cut hours and pay someone part time wages to do the job. Done deal.
Mayor and council just voted unanimously to send a letter to Ottawa to suggest a re-opening of the Veteran’s Affairs Office in Prince George and work with the other northern communities to find a temporary solution fore the needs in the meantime.
