City Pleased with Snow Clearing Efforts

Prince George, B.C. – So far so good.

That seems to be how the City of Prince George feels about its snow clearing efforts this week.

“Yes, we’ve had a decent snowfall and it’s sort of been a multiple snowfall. We are on track for completing the snow removal in the five day time frame,” says associate director of public works Gina Layte Liston.

She attributes the improvement over last year’s efforts to having more equipment available.

“This year we have seven city graders and three more contracted under retainer. So that enables us to get the work done that we need. We didn’t have those on retainer last year so they are a definite benefit to us because they are ready and waiting for us when we need them.”

Layte Liston says that’s not to say this year hasn’t been without some complaints from the public.

“There’s no question that people have concerns when it comes to icy intersections so we have calls for service in for icy intersections which we appreciate so we can go and get those fixed.”

She says trouble spots are classified under priority one and priority two service routes.

“Those have come about from years of these operators going into those areas and getting the feedback from the residents on what needs to be done in those areas. Intersections, priority hills, and school zones receive higher priority.”

For residents curious about the status of the city’s snow clearing efforts Layte Liston recommends people go to the city’s website and sign up for their eNotify service so they can receive regular updates.

“We are on track for completing the snow removal in the five day time frame” .. gotta call BS on this one. We still haven’t seen a snow removal crew from the FIRST dump, let alone the second, and today is suppose to be garbage day.

So just watch, as soon as everyone puts out their garbage cans, the crews will show up and have to avoid them all or get our and move them.

Just went and looked at the city plowing map. Why is PG Pulp Mill Rd and Northwood Pulp Mill Rds considered priority one? Once again taxpayers paying so corporations can get preferential treatment.

Love how the whiners and complainers are still bitching about the roads if they are plowed they aren’t sanded if they complain about the slippery roads if their street isn’t plowed after a day they cry too then if it’s sanded it’s either not enough sand or too much sand

Maybe if they learned to improve their driving skills and learned to slow down they wouldn’t have so much to complain about but then that would be way too easy these people would rather blame everyone else but themselves but then it’s like talking to a brick wall with them

Its true… Garbage day and none of the road around Ft George Park was cleared.

As far as signing up to get progress of plowing…wouldn’t it just be cheaper/less time comsuming to put on website rather than sending individual notices to those who sign up???

Icy sections are classified in priority??/ May I ask what they are??? One accident, two accident, pile ups ??? intersections on both sides should be priorities

Pulp mill roads kind of busy, one with a serious hill or do you consider pulp industry third class?

50 million dollars a year in salaries for city employees. Given the state of this city, we have the right to complain.

And I have to call BS on the “school zones receive higher priority” statement. Go and try to take a walk around Sacred Heart, esp, the Hemlock side where people drop off and pick up their kids.

Have to agree with you on this one, Dearth, some people just can’t be appeased no matter what you do. I think that has more to do with who they are than with what’s actually going on in the real world. They have no conception of what it takes to clear 700 lane km of roadway. I have been seriously impressed with the snow removal efforts this year and am more concerned about the costs than anything.

Slow down, drive defensively and grow the hell up. If you expect better snow clearing than what we’re getting right now, either pay for it personally or move to Hawaii.

“if their street isn’t plowed after a day they cry too” .. I don’t consider not seeing a plow since the first big dump ONLY a day. They have had almost a week to get up here. Chief Lake Rd is busy too, but they don’t give that priority one, yet Inglewood onto Kluane is priority one? No doubt someone at the city who does the planning lives in those areas.

Here’s one for you: Phone call from a major delivery service yesterday informing me I have a parcel for pick up at the depot. When I questioned
why no delivery was attempted I was told that “residential deliveries were not being done as the streets haven’t been plowed”
Really? the garbage and recycle people have managed to come and go. We’ve managed to go back and forth to work the last 3 days.
Went to the “live chat” on website and the one response received was “that the tractor trailer might get stuck if the streets weren’t plowed” Tractor trailer??? to make residential deliveries???for a box that weighs 1 kg. This person didn’t have a clue. When asked is there anything else I can help you with, asked for the email address of head office customer service. Surprise!! they don’t have one.
Well I’m off in my mid-sized sedan to go pick up my parcel, hope I make it!

Street plowed this morning much sooner than expected..

Dearth, well said!

I have to question the timing of some snow clearing operations. Why would there be 2 graders plowing the street in front of Harwin Elementary right at the same time parents are dropping their kids off. Surely the City workers/mgmt can look at the school schedules and coordinate the snow clearing to be down before or after drop-off and pick-up times at school. Is it really that hard to coordinate this kind of thing?

Don’t pat yourself on the back to hard….someone just died today from hiway conditions.

PG Girl..the Hart Highway is not maintained by the city, that is YRB.

” Surely the City workers/mgmt can look at the school schedules and coordinate the snow clearing to be down before or after drop-off and pick-up times at school. Is it really that hard to coordinate this kind of thing?”

It’s a bureaucracy, there are many jobs to justify so yes, it is extremely difficult to coordinate.

The graders will probably slow down some drivers in that school zone.

Surprise, surprise, they plowed our street this morning. I figured it would be at least a week! Or two or three like usual.

You would think after a century of plowing the streets of Prince George that this would be a total non issue!!
All these stupid articles and comments are exactly that. Going over all the ratings and other BS associated with this years plowing makes it look like it’s the city’s first year performing the daunting task….
I hope we see as many articles about the city grass cutters this summer…..,because it would make just as much sense as this does.
