Harper Not Coming To Winter Games

Friday, January 16, 2015 @ 11:14 AM

Ottawa- Prime Minister Harper will not be attending the Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

The Prime Minister had earlier expressed an interest in attending the games  , but the PM’s office now says he will not be attending.

The announcement came this morning from Anna Tomala, Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, who said the PM, will not be coming to Prince George for the games.

Lol..

I was looking forward to seeing him and his band play at the ceremony. lol

Lol I guess it’s not a big enough event to attend to by the big man himself but damn, the Canadian Junior Hockey champs was. If the winter games was held in an eastern community Harper would go no prob but pfft, it’s too far out west this time.

At least now you guys are safe from the Taliban or whatever it was.

Well little known information, the Vatican couldn’t lend Harper the Pope Mobile due to an issue with insurance and the fact it doesn’t have winter rated tires. So when you can’t blaze in like a “Diva” there is no real sense in going to the show…. Little levity is a good thing..

The haters win today, first they can blast Harper for coming, now they can blast him for not coming..lol

P Val: Not everyone is a “hater”, some of us just find stuff funny or amusing, doesn’t mean we “hate”. Need to go easy on the labeling folks just because of the comments they post.

Huh?
They just said he was coming.
As PM, he should .
But this riding is a lock for him. No need to please the electorate.
Debt- we’ve got it in spades, biggest ever
Deficit- said he’d never run one ….ahem
Military support- not for veterans
Small government- second biggest ever?
Senate reform- nah, let’s just stack it with a bunch of scamming Dbags
Muzzling scientist- science is bad
Closing down research and emptying libraries- knowledge is power.

This man is nowhere near a conservative.

Actually, I am quite happy he isn’t coming. Personally I would like to see politicians spend less time at these events and more time working on our economy, health care, etc.

Kind of ridiculous how many hours are put in by politicians attending these kinds of events.

Prof, you say’in bullet proof tires don’t work in snow? LOL

The “they” you refer to are the good folks at 250 News. They were acting on a non-so-accurate rumour.

However you want to call it, the money saved federally by him not coming should be considered. The security needed for him to do his visit to our little slice of northern heaven would be outrageous. Motorcade from the airport to town, security at the hotel, then security for his movements within town. By the time you add it up the RCMP bill would be mind blowing, and he’s just the Prime Minister, but still requiring the security any high level diplomat would require. So better he stay at home and watch it on T.V.

Hey Gizzly2, not if the city doesn’t stay on top of snow clearing…lol

Professional, I didn’t call everyone a hater.. I did say about the Harper haters having a hayday.

First Harper is going to attend so they complain about that.
Now he isn’t so they can complain about that..

It’s a 2’fer day. Hehehe

P Val, you hit the nail on the head in both articles.
Pro, when a person posts a comment, does it not represent what their opinion is or what that individual personally stands for? I think in doing so, the individual is labelling themselves….correct? When the individual’s comments are almost always negative, the perception of that individual becomes negative.
I don’t think there’s such a thing as a positive or neutral “negative comment”
……although everybody is entitled to there own opinion…lol

He couldn’t deal with shari’s crying eyes.

No worries P Val, just seen the “haters” tag tossed around too much here lately,to me it seems a bit harsh. I got the jest of the humour you applied it too, didn’t miss that….lol

Reading the blog is more entertaining then watching survivor.

DPJ it is even more entertaining when we stir the pot once in a while to see what churns to the surface!

Yikes, survivor is still on? And people openly admit to watching it..yikes ;)

It if weren’t so pathetic it would be funny. When the blog said he was coming the majority here whined. Now they’ve said he’s not they whine. You’ve just confirmed what I always thought, whiners don’t care what the PM does. They are perfectly happy to spit out negative bullet points just because he isn’t the PM they voted for.

So to summarize:

Harper’s coming to town. “Boo! Hiss!”

Harper’s not coming to town. “Boo! Hiss!”

And on it goes.

FYI, the CWG crew were saying just yesterday that he was coming so I wouldn’t call what 250 News reported on unsubstantiated.

The PMO probably changed its mind after they read this morning’s comments. :)

He’s practising for the flippingest floppingest budget in canadian history . He’s already flipped it from March to flopping it to April . By this time next year every province will be in the red and alberta will have provincial sales tax . Prentice being a harperite ,will likely blend it with ottawa for a big payday from harper .

When the bar gets set as low as “Survivor” it ain’t difficult.

At least Harper looks like a Prime Minister. Trudeau looks like a skate boarder, and Muclair looks like a cough drop salesman.

It is sad to see Mr Harper not come to our fine city considering the strong conservative support it has given for many of elections and the his winning success . Our city does not seem to be of any interest to our leader not even with a high profile event like our Canada winter games .
Too bad Mr Harper we are not of interest to you .

“At least Harper looks like a Prime Minister. Trudeau looks like a skate boarder, and Muclair looks like a cough drop salesman”

=============================

Yeah? Well I bet Trudeau could beat Harper up. Mulcair, I’m not so sure about. He has a bit of a crazy uncle look to him.

romualdo: “Our city does not seem to be of any interest to our leader not even with a high profile event like our Canada winter games . ”

Is that the official reason he didn’t come? Lack of interest? Or are you just jumping to that conclusion?

Harper couldn’t pick within 200 kilometres on a blank map the location of Prince george.

Ben, this and the other story saying he was coming have garnered 250 the most hilarious comments I’ve ever read.
Quick, do another one with the Pope.

See I told you Pal now what will you have to say
heers

harper’s reason for not attending, likely a security issue, not enough available closet space :)

cowardice is not a desirable or favourable ‘quality’ in a ‘leader’.

How would one know who others voted for?
How about some bullet points extolling the virtues of our fine PM, and what he has done to further enhance quality of life for our fellow Canadians?

Too bad but it is no longer the prerogative of country leaders to take a stand in the face of danger. They must be protected. This results in them taking action in protecting themselves as well. Its all laid out in their security details.
He had no choice in the matter. He has to follow protocol. He and all his colleagues are trained in what to do in case of emergency.

Just like his politically motivated $1Billion dollar pine beetle mitigation program announced prior to his getting elected to government… Then disappeared once we gave him our vote. What will he announce when Intercon is moth balled later this spring when the wood finer runs out?

Guaranteed ridings do not need to be won over. Period. The Winter Games will go on.

Much ado about nothing. Next!

Eagleone, you state “Then disappeared once we gave him our vote.”

We? Our??

You gave Prime Minister Harper your vote???

Man, I had you pegged all wrong! Glad that you have seen the light and have moved away from the Dark Side!

Its the winter games, not the Olympics or world stage event like World Junior Hockey. If he doesn’t wish to come and watch… I live here and don’t have tickets to events. If all of you do, enjoy!

Hey, if we take some heed to Professional’s comments, it follows that there are no rooms available for a Harper entourage. I know of people who have tried to get rooms in hotels/motels/rooming houses and none are available.
So what would the hotelier do? Cancel booked reservations?

I heard it was recommended that Harper stay away… apparently all that “hot air” he constantly emanates would have adversely affected snow levels and the local climate… not good for the Winter Games.

1. Harper was in Prince George a number of years ago as a member of the Reform Party.

2. If Harper does what Campbell always did, he would fly into Prince George in the AM and leave in the PM, thus not having to stay overnight.

3. The Harper Government implemented the export tax on lumber, thus avoiding the US duty on exported lumber. BC’s portion of the export tax amounted to approx $250 Million per year. This money was transferred to the Provincial Government and disappeared into general revenues. Total transferred since the implementation of the export tax would amount to or exceed $1 Billion dollars. Soooooo, if you wan to know where the $ 1 Billion in Pine Beetle money went, you better ask the Provincial Government.

Harper likely had full intentions to come until someone in the Conservative Party Association Headquarters reminded him he may be asked some very difficult questions about the recent nomination contest.

priorities, priorities we are not and never will be for king harper.

He and his entourage could stay at the jail. I bet they have room, and its secure and set up for accomodating groups.

Darn. My collection of rotten tomatoes will have to wait for another day.

You know that’s a cop out Palapu. Your ideological blinkers blind you sometimes. Harper bought the vote from this region by promising $1 Billion in beetle mitigation for infrastructure and economic sustainability investments through a Northern Trust type investment… he did not promise a tax that would be transferred to general revenue of the province. Would that be an admission that the Harper government had no ideas or solutions of their own for our most pressing economic issue? Is that what you are saying Palopu?

After elected as Prime Minister Harpers priorities changed and he quietly dropped the promised investments, because he wanted to create the conditions where Northern Gateway would pick up the slack, so all bets for government investment in this region were off. Our elected MP’s that reside in other far away cities laid low and tried to forget the promises were ever made in the first place, so as to keep favor with Harper. Harper has no MP’s from PG, so its just a prime example of the representation one has when they don’t have a local advocate with the way our system is.

If Harper can not show up with any commitments to this city that are not political and fluff for short term political optics in an election year, then its hard to overlook his past broken promises.

He could make concrete promises to upgrade the trans Canada highway through this region via a South Fraser Boundary Road crossing, or an Ospika overpass at Walmart, or some four lane improvements out to Vanderhoof… maybe even a commitment of federal dollars for sports and culture, parks status for the Pine Pass, trade designations for our airport… the list is long.

Obviously Harper realizes he can not simply show up for smiles and handshakes and empty promises in a long projected visit, especially considering his foreign policy induced security environment. He needs to rethink his position in an election year and maybe show up for a surprise ‘unplanned’ visit with something to offer to this region and our city if he shows up at all.

I guess the Nothern BC wild west was more than he could handle….
or maybe he read the comments and realized no one really wanted him here?

BC Racer. Seems you do not follow politics very closely. Lets look at the last Federal Election.

Pr George Peace River.

Conservatives 23,947
NDP 9,876
GRN 2,301
Liberal 2,008

Pr George Cariboo

Conservatives 24,443
NDP 13,135
GRN 2,702
Liberal 2,190
Other 1,038

Total votes for the Conservatives in the two ridings 48,390.

Sooooo. If Harper came to town I am sure that a few people would show up to see him.

Eagleone. Times change. What difference does it make if the Provincial Government gets a billion dollars for a Beetle program or they get a billion dollars from the Feds from an export tax. Money is money. The question is, where did the money go.??? Perhaps on the Sea to Sky Highway, or the new Port Mann Bridge, of the upgrades to the Freeway in Vancouver, or BC Transit. Who knows.

There is plenty of money transferred from the Feds to the Provinces, Billions in gas tax revenue for infrastructure etc; Prince George got $20 Million in Fed Money from the gas tax in the last 10 years. Where did that money go.???
