City Snow Clearing Continues Tonight

Sunday, January 18, 2015 @ 3:55 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Crews with the City of Prince George will be back on city streets tonight, clearing windrows from areas not completed last week.

Crews worked overnight Thursday night and into Friday morning clearing windrows on Highland St., South Kelly and West Austin Roads, and on routes downtown. Windrows not completed will be attended to during the night shift tonight.

Residents are reminded of parking restrictions during snow and ice-clearing operations.

does anyone know if the city uses the snowblower or if they even have it still. I do know it worked quite well. Just wondering.

I saw it last year during the night. I’m positive they still use it. That’s the only way they could remove the windrow down 5th ave between Tabor and Ospika. It was 8 feet wide and 6 feet tall. It would take all night with loaders. With the snowblower, 1 pass in an hour would do it.

Beautifully mild easy winter with minimum snow pack so far. Hopefully the city finds enough work to keep their employees busy.

I just hope there is enough snow for the games to be successful.

Not sure why the city doing their regular job warrants a headline. Unless to remind people to expect it so they can do right with their vehicles.

Maverick what where the employees doing before winter, nothing?

Not much point in mowing the lawns right now, is there?

I have seen a huge difference in our neighbourhood this year with the snow clearing and in a positive way. The grader operator even got out and moved my neighbour’s garbage can. Great job guys !!

It doesn’t matter what the city workers do people will complain, I could see them shovel Mavericks driveway by hand down to the gravel, asphalt , concrete and he would complain about them doing it wrong somehow.

We all know the games are coming and we want to make our city as presentable as we can. Not worth judging the snow removal till after the games are over. See how much money is left in the snow removal budget left. If you don’t have the money to run the equipement or the manpower to run the equipement it’s not the city workers fault, that’s when you look at management.

So snow removal and lawnmowing that’s it? Normally I would take the lawnmowing commentas being sarcastic but judging by a lot of comments on this site, not so sure.

Its going to snow all day. Give you guys plenty to snivel about tomorrow. Meanwhile….Go Packers Go !

Sorry P Val for you feeling I come off as a complainer. I really don’t have a problem with the snow removal if this is their maximum capabilities I guess that is what our money will allow. I do have a problem with planning and budget which effects safety of our residents. Salt is a commodity which is easily obtained and should be part of the plan and budget. I have not seen much salt being used this year, we have had several windows which could have been utilized to ensure maximized safety for our residents which in turn could save lives. YRB also needs to step up salt applications. I am sure if proper protocol had of been followed one life would have been saved on our highways recently.

I have no problem spending money if it saves lives. I do have problems saving money to justify wage increases.

Know what else saves lives? Driving to the conditions.

Use lots of salt then the complaints will start about rusty vehicles.

So are you saying that we shouldn’t do whatever is possible in order to make road conditions better in the winter?

Yeah but the car washes would love the increased business. Windshield shops may not like it though, LOL.

No need for salt, that’s old school. Lava rock is the best..

Maverick..you are sure salting the roads would have saved one life.. How can you be? Salt only works under certain temps.. You know that salt melts ice.. Then once it’s gone the water then freezes and makes conditions worse.

As mentioned before, driving for the conditions is the best way to be safe out there, if you drive to fast, or change lanes quickly etc it doesn’t matter how much salt is down..you will be in an accident unless very very lucky.

I have no argument with you P Val, you are absolutely right slowing down and driving to the conditions is the best alternative. Unfortunately there is a lot of drivers who lack the common sense to do just that.

As for salt, you are right after -6 or -7 salt is no longer effective, but the pitting makes it a lot easier to remove instead of revisiting an area 2 or 3 times it becomes manageable

Of course we may have to hire a consultant for confirmation because I am by no means a professional or a know it all like some.

mav: “So are you saying that we shouldn’t do whatever is possible in order to make road conditions better in the winter?”

The road conditions are ever changing and drivers must take responsibility and the appropriate precautions before heading out on the road. No amount of salt or snow plows will change that. Blaming the roads for poor driving is a cop out. The main cause of collisions and cars leaving the road is *driver error* and not driving to the conditions. Period. (Notice how I didn’t use the word ‘accident’).

Not sure about you J.B., but it sounds good run with it buddy!!Ha,ha

Consultant? Would that not be more city hall expense.

This is not a reflection on the city workers, but did some of you notice the serious potholes that appeared during the big melt last week? I just hope that while the Winter Games are on the temperature stays below freezing so that the visitors don’t get a nasty surprise.

Maverick 1965 … Well said

Johnnybelt, DRIVING TO THE CONDITIONS is great …. Do you have a magic spell that insures all the other drivers around you does the same ??????

Lol: “Johnnybelt, DRIVING TO THE CONDITIONS is great …. Do you have a magic spell that insures all the other drivers around you does the same ??????”

Yes. It is cast at the same time magical snowplows appear and clear every flake of snow as it hits the pavement. Until such time, drive to the conditions. Please.
