UPDATED-St Albert RCMP Officer Remains in Grave Condition

Sunday, January 18, 2015 @ 9:10 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The St. Albert RCMP officer critically injured in yesterday morning’s shooting at a casino remains in grave condition today.

42-year-old Constable David Wynn and 49-year-old Auxiliary Constable Derek Bond were shot around 3 a.m. MT Saturday as they investigated the discovery of a stolen automobile in the parking lot outside the casino. Constable Wynn suffered a head wound and has been on life support since yesterday morning. Auxiliary Constable Bond has since been released from hospital.

A massive manhunt was launched for the suspected gunman who fled the scene. Police set up numerous roadblocks in St. Albert, which is just northwest of Edmonton, and scoured the area by helicopter. They traced the suspect to an unoccupied house in a rural area east of St. Albert and found the suspect dead inside, apparently killed by his own hand. The suspect’s name has not been released.

The RCMP says police did not fire their weapons at the rural scene, nor did Constable Wynn fire his service weapon at the casino. As is normal practice, Auxiliary Constable Bond did not have a firearm.

As police had the rural house under their control, the suspect’s death is classified as an in-custody death and the investigation has been turned over to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team to conduct an independent probe into that death. The RCMP are conducting their own investigation into the shooting of the two officers at the Apex Casino.

An RCMP update on the condition of Constable Wynn which was to have taken place earlier this morning was delayed until a later time.

UPDATE:  The RCMP have now identified the suspect in the officer shootings and the man found deceased in the rural house east of St. Albert as 34-year-old Shawn Maxwell Rehn of the Edmonton area.  Police have previously stated that Rehn was known to them.  An autopsy on Rehn’s body is to be performed on Monday.

We continue to hope for the best for Cnst. David Wynn.
