A Separate Inquest for Burns Lake?

Tuesday, January 20, 2015 @ 11:46 AM

Prince George, B.C. – 250News has learned B.C.’s Chief coroner Lisa Lapointe is considering a separate coroner’s inquest for the Burns Lake mill explosion.

That from Maureen Luggi, widow of Robert Luggi Junior, one of two men killed in the Babine Forest Products mill explosion three years ago today.

“Well we did request from the coroner to have it moved to Burns Lake and she (Lisa Lapointe) did attend a meeting in Burns Lake with the leadership,” said Luggi this morning.

“She met with the mayor and some of the representatives from the First Nations in Burns Lake and I understand that she is giving it serious consideration and a this point I understand a decision hasn’t been made yet.”

She says the meeting took place December 7th, 2014.

This after the Coroner’s Service announced last August it would be holding a single public inquest into the deaths of four workers who died in two sawmill explosions (Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills) in 2012.

The inquest is scheduled to begin March 2 in Prince George.

The BC Coroners Office told 250News this morning that Lapointe is unable to provide comment on this story as she is the presiding coroner in the case.

Yes it costs a lot of our taxpayers dollars to have two inquests.
But, this one should be held in Burns Lake.
Justice must be seen to be done, still holds true.

The Village of Burns Lake needs this for 2 reasons: the truth needs to be brought forward for all to see, and the people of that community need closure. The unfortunate part of a Coroner’s inquest is that no charges may stem from their findings, but it is more likely that they truth of the matter will become known.
Anyone who has followed the previous investigations into the PG mill explosion and the Burns Lake explosion know that Worksafe BC dropped the ball on their investigations. Justice may never be served in this case, hopefully knowing and broadcasting the real truth will bring some measure of peace to the community and families.
