The Emily Carr Centre will focus on Art and design based educational programs, applied research activities, as well as partnerships focussed on design innovation and secondary manufacturing with wood, and wood based products.
The WIDC building is one of the tallest contemporary wood buildings in North America .
The new partnership will bring new programs to be created in partnership with UNBC, in wood engineering programs.
The new classes will begin in the fall of 2016. As of yet, according to Emily Carr, they have not worked out the final details as to how many students will be using the facility along with UNBC. The number of instructors from both institutions is also not yet known.

Ok, who or what is Emily car? Is she paying the rent or the taxpayers? of PG.
Did we have a say in this? Absolutley not. I need some answers please. and ty.
Slow down, One Man. Emily Carr is a famous Canadian artist, which is now the name of the educational institution, Emily Carr Institute. Tuitions will be paying their rent.
Emily Carr has been dead for quite some time now so, despite the headline, she’s not coming here. However, the world famous school named after her is opening shop here. This is awesome news.
I am a bit surprised that anyone doesn’t know who Emily Carr is and what she contributed to the canadian art scene.
When you have politicians grabbing the limelight at every opportunity (why is Bond in every picture regardless of the story) these days, it is no wonder some people get antsy about it costing taxpayers something, why else are politicians here other than to dig deeper and deeper.
Huh, you know why bond is in so many photo ops? Because she does nothing else so has plenty of time to waste.
Gee, the Minister for Advanced Education comes to her own riding to announce that a world renowned Advanced Education program is coming to town and you people complain about it? Give your head a shake.
LOL, have to agree with you there axman!
A world renowned advanced education program..but they know nothing about it or how many students etc.. Lol world what..lol
Right on the money, axman.
Shirley is not the Minister of Advance Education. She’s the Minister of Jobs, tourism, and skills training. But I agree with axeman, she’s a local MP and this is actually a really big deal for PG. Makes sense she be present for the announcement. This isn’t the opening of a new toilet at the PG library.
No argument this a big deal for PG.
BUT CNC has had a fine arts program for some time that can feed students into Emily Carr. In this region where both UNBC and CNC are hungry for students it seems unfortunate for them to compete fracturing the possible pool of students.
Emily Carr has had a partnership in form or another with CNC for decades … Now it appears Minister Bond is recycling those program dollars to house a UNBC program at WIDC. Looks like someone built a Trojan horse and is now trying to fill it without spending any new dollars.
anotherside has it right.
What do we actually have in the WIDC?? Originally touted as a 10 story wood building. (highest in the world) $75 Million cost. Reduced to 6 Stories $25 Million.
1. Will be used for 16 days by the media for the Winter Games.
2. No other use mentioned to this point in time. So will the building sit empty??? What the hell is going on.
3. Classes will not start until the fall of 2016. That’s about two (2) years from now.
4. Have not worked out the details on how many students will use the building along with UNBC.
5. The number of instructors from both institutions is also unknown.
There are some other unknowns. This is (at this point in time) a Provincial Government Building. So I guess it wont pay any taxes, or very little. There was some talk of the Province signing this building over to the City. If so, then we will be stuck with the maintenance.
Seems to me that this is one hell of an expenditure for a few people to study the Arts and Design.
In any event we will have to sit back and see how this **fiasco** unfolds. Perhaps like the $33 Million Airport Runway, it will just sit in the sun, like an overweight tourist on a beach in Hawaii ,.
I did not know who Emily Carr was either.
To answer some of my questions I have found out the following.
1. Emily Carr will join the newly established Masters of Integrated Design program in UNBC’s engineering school as key tenants in the building.
2. It will be called the Emily Carr Centre for Design Innovation and Entrepreneurship, established in cooperation with UNBC.
3. The establishment of the Emily Carr Centre for Design Innovation and Entrepreneurship is an exceptional opportunity for our university to contribute to the creative and economic growth of North BC. Emily Carr president Ron Burnett said.
5. During the announcement, Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and MLA for PG-Valmount, said the Government will also move the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources offices into the WIDC.
Not sure where these offices are presently located.
I just find it funny that “pgjohn” is the name that brought up the new toilets at the library.
Carry on
Touche, interceptor… touche
Here is why you will not see Emily Carr here in PG until 2016…..Their lease runs out on Granville Island.
This is taken from the Vancouver Sun:
Daphne Bramham: Winds of change hit Granville Island
What will replace Emily Carr University? And, more importantly, who will pay?
BY DAPHNE BRAMHAM, VANCOUVER SUN COLUMNIST JUNE 20, 2014
Vancouver’s Granville Island not only needs to change after 35 years, it has to change because soon Emily Carr University of Arts + Design will be gone.
The question of what will fill the gaping hole left by the departure of the island’s single, biggest tenant in 2016 is the focus of a consultants’ report released today by the island’s overseer, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
So what concerns me now is:
1. Will there be enough classrooms? Will they be at the College or University?
2. Whose library will they be using?
3. What about a theater?
If Emily Carr is moving up here out of Granville Island could this possibly mean that something can be in the works that we do not know about in regards to a theater?…..
Speculations and wait and see………
Here is another tidbit from the article:
“5,000 — Students enrolled at Emily Carr University, which has outgrown the space on Granville Island. Its new building on Great Northern Way is expected to cost $134 million and will be completed in July 2016.”
For some reason I do not think we will be getting to many students up here for this program….time will tell.
Government funded partially – put the htpp etc in from of this: canadianart.ca/news/2013/01/24/ecuad-plans-move-off-of-granville-island/
Several years ago, Emily Carr and UNBC had an arrangement for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree but I believe that it was discontinued.
UNBC already has an under-used footprint downtown in the old BMO building on 3rd Avenue. That building has been renovated and re-renovated on several occasions at a cost of hundreds of thousands to the taxpayers of B.C.
I suspect that the provincial government will do anything to create interest in the WIDC building. And Yes, the taxpayer will be footing the bill for it all.
That’s interesting guesswhat, I didn’t realize that the entire operation was moving to PG, I thought that perhaps it was a second campus.
I’m also wondering how many students will make the trek to PG. It’s one thing to study the arts in the LML, with its cultural characteristics. PG? Not the same environment at all. Very interesting decision.
NMG -“That’s interesting guesswhat, I didn’t realize that the entire operation was moving to PG, I thought that perhaps it was a second campus.”
You need to read the articles NMG. The entire operation is not moving to PG. There is a larger new campus being built down south in the LML.
