Clark Says Ministry of Mining to Get Cash Boost

Monday, January 26, 2015 @ 9:33 AM

Vancouver, B.C. – Premier Christy Clark  has announced  a boost  in the funding for the Ministry of Mining.

She says Budget 2015 will  see the Ministry of Mining’s budget boosted by $6 million dollars a year to top the $20 million dollar mark.

In her address to the delegates of the Association of Mining Exploration in B.C. ‘RoundUp’ event  underway in Vancouver, Clark says the  extra dollars will be used in three ways:

1. Contingency  funding for more mine inspections,  so the turn around time will be faster

2. Establish a major permitting office.  Its role will be to improve coordination across the Government so the ministries aren’t  “tripping over one another and putting  each others deadlines at risk”

3.  Increase resources to  have  more boots on the ground ,  doing more inspections  making sure “that in light of Mount Polley we  recognize our greater responsibility of working together and making sure that mining is done safely and done in a way that  maintains public confidence and public trust.” .

Clark says there is a potential  for ten  new mines in B.C.   She reiterated  a promise made during the  Natural Resource Forum in Prince George last week , that the Province   is committed to doing a better job of  sharing decision making and  benefits of resource extraction with First Nations,  and pointed to the Tsilqhot’in decision  as the guideline to  the path  to be followed.

No acknowledgment that the Liberal government’s plan to let self regulation didn’t work. Think of all of the expertise they removed during their previous cuts to the ministry. Oh what would I expect. Christy and her cabinet and caucus got caught and now they are trying to make it look like they are so proactive. Shame on them.

The mining industry in Canada is amongst the most heavily and most stringently regulated in the world. If we’ve learned anything, employing armies of government bureaucrats and paper pushers does not equate to safety nor is it a guarantee that nothing will ever happen.

be nice to know where this 6 million came from..

It came out of our pockets pval . It would be bright on their part to send the mines minister to Iceland instead of constantly going to India and China . If they were to go there . They would find an intelegent way to produce unlimited energy for ever without burning or polluting anything . And jobs for engineers , electricians , builders , drilling rigs , etc.etc.etc. and you don’t have to reinvent the wheel . All one needs is leadership that isn’t owned and operated by the fossils . Somebody tell cc its 2015 .

I know it comes from us, but did she take more money from ICBC, bc hydro, cut more to seniors, education etc.

Since she dropped the ball on LNG she is trying to change the focus.

How did she drop the ball on LNG? Do you have a crystal ball?

Iceland?

Yes Iceland . Look up geothermal energy . Icelanders say they are blessed to not have oil . Don’t feel bad though . As stupid goes Hawaiians are in the running with us , as they sit on volcanic islands out in the wind and sun . They get most of their energy from burning oil . But don’t worry their utility’s are fighting solar tooth and nail so they can continue to burn more and more oil .

Seamut I get the feeling that you really like to burn oil . If I’m right .you would love watching others that share that interest . Youtube has some Great stuff for you . Just look up ” rolling coal ” if you like oil ,you’ll love it .

Seamut, how many companies did she say where pursuing LNG in bc and due to this windfall bc would be debt free and in better shape financially. Now how many are still pursuingLNG interests ? Read the news to find out.

Ataloss, I’m a bit at a loss as to your points on burning oil & using coal for energy in BC. You mention geothermal power & allude to solar & wind power, how do you propose we set up the infrastructure for said means of producing energy? You need to mine to find the ore to produce steel & iron. You need coal to help in the refining process of making metal(s) from raw ore. Pumps, drilling rigs, vehicles & all of the other equipment needed are not made from hemp, you actually need material that is in part produced from…mining. That is just the start, now how do you propose we transfer this energy & convert it to a useable product? Copper (or any other metal) does not just float to the surface in a user ready form. It has to be extracted & refined, that requires energy in large quantities. Yes, as a whole we need to find better & more intelligent ways to produce energy for our species, but we also still need the raw materials that come from mining & oil to help in finding alternate solutions.

Ataloss please do some googling. There has been geothermo research in BC for decades but nothing economically viable yet. Besides heat water volumes are needed and those have not been found yet. Meager creek has been researched for decades and if it was economically viable I am sure there would have development.

For ataloss

Pval do you have a crystal ball? The market changed rapidly, some companies in, some out then throw in issues with natives and the green blob, kind of puts a damper on investments. You should read something besides the Tyee and Georgia Straight.

seamut no crystal ball needed…..or maybe there was one and it was being used by Qatar, Malaysia, Australia, Nigeria, Indonesia, etc … when they all started exporting LNG

No, I have seen how Clark works before..

DT44 we are more or less on the same page. It’s a brick on brick thing . We need all of the above . Ten new mines ? When ? As for how do we set up the infrastructure nessesary ? That’s the easiest part of all . All that has to be done is to put the smallest contributor on the same level playing field as the run of the river crowd and the wind farms. Let everyone participate and get out of the way . But cc will not do this as she controls the bchydro monopoly . Net metering is anti prosumer . The smart meters are in but they are still being unused for their intended use .

It gets worse seamut . They are tearing out old unused dams and when you get old enough , your gone too.

Name calling, guess I am winning the discussion.

Unlisted, Australia is taking 30 billion dollor hit from falling prices, do try to keep up. The other countries affected also.
