Power Restored at YXS

Prince George, B.C. – Officials at the Prince George airport say power has now been restored at the facility.
The wet, heavy snowfall yesterday had caused a power outage last night and, while back-up power was available in the terminal, the back-up generator for the airfield did not kick in resulting in unsafe conditions for landings and take-offs.
Communications spokesperson Lindsay Cotter says airport electricians and B.C. Hydro personnel managed to restore power late last night. She says passengers flying out of YXS this morning should contact their airline for the latest information about their travel details.

Back up generator did not kick in.??
Oh, that’s comforting to know. Palopu
a good example of why to drive?
You would think things like backup generators would be turned on and made sure they were in working operation on a regular basis. Couldn’t they just turn it on manually? Either the wording is wrong or their generator system is so “smart” they don’t have a manual startup.
It is a good thing that this happened now rather than during the Winter Games! Backup generators must be checked regularly. If they are not actually run every so often neither manual nor automatic starting will do anything if their actual readiness to start up and run hasn’t been verified. Old fuel, frozen water in the fuel lines, batteries discharged, relay contacts corroded, stuff like that. Imagine a plane is landing at night and all the lights go off and stay off!
you would think nothing breaks down. I have been at work when our back up genie didn’t work and wouldn’t start manually. Was a mechanical problem. They happen.
If a plane couldn’t land andsince they have enough fuel to get to a secondary airport they would fly there.
I agree with Prince George. Not having your back up generator work when its needed, (its only real purpose) and turning back flights, doesn’t exactly give YSX a **Pass**.
Not a good way to attract new air business to the region.
I guess all you experts never had a car break down, a stove , washer dryer etc just stop working. To bad, then you would understand mechanical things fail.
P Val. When you start to compare a back up generator to light up the runway for an Airport, to a washer dryer, stove, or a car, you have obviously missed the point of the whole situation. They are not comparable.
I suspect someone will be getting their walking papers over this one.
A mechanical breakdown is comparable.. When it happens it doesn’t work until repaired.
“If a plane couldn’t land and since they have enough fuel to get to a secondary airport they would fly there.”
Or crash land in the tulies!
Too many “ifs”! Why not just maintain the backup generators in proper working order?! Hospitals have backup generators too! What would you say if all the power went off and stayed of while you are in the middle of having a life saving major operation?

Good thing Jazz is no longer flying than, I heard most of their aircraft were flying on fumes.

What is the back-up plan if this situation occurred and a jet had no other option but to land?
All Air Carriers are required to carry enough fuel to get them to a secondary Airport, For the Jets I would say that would be Vancouver. Smaller planes probably Quesnel, Williams Lake, Smithers.
That’s correct, Palopu. The assertion that planes are flying with barely enough fuel to get to their destination is just plain wrong.

Good to know!
JohnnyBelt & Palopu: That very issue occurred a few weeks back with a Sun Wings flight doing and emergency landing in Abbotsford due to low fuel. They could not divert, they had nothing to make it to Vancouver (where they were intended to land). This is why PG is only an “emergency field” and not much of one at that with back-up generators not working when needed.
See these things happen when you have people in airport admin that know nothing about airport operations.
A few weeks ago a Sun Wing 737 coming from Mexico had to land in Abbotsford because they did not have enough fuel to even make the primary destination of Vancouver. Would have been in a heap of trouble if Abbotsford was socked in.
Or maybe the Costco there put in an av-gas pump that was way cheaper than Richmond.
stepped on your post prof
It is up to the flight crew not airport admin to ensure that there is enough fuel on the aircraft to get to destination plus required cushion.
Doesn’t Jazz still fly for Air Canada under the Air Canada Express name? the Express part makes me laugh considering its slow planes (but thats another conversation piece).
That’s great, but pointing out isolated cases doesn’t matter. The fact of the matter is that the requirement is for planes to be carrying enough fuel.
Some inside informaton guys! Planes have been landing here
Lately on fumes, because fuel for the airlines as been cheaper
To buy here!
Sparrow: It’s airport admin’s job to make sure the airport is running correctly for any and all situations (including power loss events). Has nothing to do with air crews forgetting to fuel up correctly before take-off (which is a rule but who checks with rules??).

Can you look into this matter J.B. I know how you dis-like the word accident so I will use, “incident waiting to happen” make sure to inform us of your finding. Thanks.
Gotta love rumour and innuendo. Hey, a friend of a friend told me this, so it has to be true!
Mav: “Can you look into this matter J.B. I know how you dis-like the word accident so I will use, “incident waiting to happen” make sure to inform us of your finding. Thanks.”
Wait Mav, weren’t you the one who initially made the unfounded statement that Air Canada was flying around ‘on fumes’? And you want me to confirm that? What planet are you from?
JohnnyBelt spin doctor! ha,ha. You should be in politics! or are you?
I just want to know who is covering my cost for an extra night in Vancouver, should it be WestJet that lied to us telling us it was weather or should it be YXS for their lack of preparedness. Maybe someone should introduced YXS to a thing called batteries should a genset suddenly not start or fail during an outage. I know people that run their cars on batteries.
You should quit while you’re behind, Mav. You’re just embarrassing yourself now.
Alright thanks J.B. Hey if you every need a carpenter to widen your door jams give me a call. Yours ears are probably getting a little raw with that swollen head.
Now if you could just harness all the political BS that our local politicians put out we could power the whole city of Vancouver.
Supposed to tested once a month like all emergency systems. Maybe someone should ask to see their logs!
Not sure why jet fuel would be cheaper in Prince George when you consider it has to be trucked here from Edmonton. Perhaps jonnypg could give us some facts.

That’s an interesting question. Since WestJet was not at fault they shouldn’t be on the hook but why on earth would they tell you a lie? I guess it’s probably easier just to say weather then to go into the details.
I think YXS should cover your costs. Take them to small claims if they refuse.
