Gasoline Prices Are Up

Sunday, February 1, 2015 @ 1:11 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Not to be a distraction from the Super Bowl pre-game hype, but you may have noticed gasoline prices in Prince George, and in fact across the country, are on their way up.

Following a provincial and national trend of rising prices, gas in the city is also headed in that direction. Costco is now selling a litre of regular at 88.9 cents after being at 85.9 for over a week. Four other local outlets, Superstore, Canadian Tire and the Super Save stations on Victoria Street and Continental Way, are charging 89.9. The rest of the stations in town are charging a dime more per litre, 99.9.

The B.C. average price per litre of regular is currently 100.89 cents while the Canadian average is 92.88 cents. The reason for the price increase is not clear. Crude oil is currently set at $45.19US/barrel.

By the way, grab another Lombardi Trophy Seahawks!

The reason for the increase is clear, it’s about greed and profits.

I heard the local refinery here in town called in some contractors and wanted them to reduce their rates by 25% to make up for the shortfall in the price of crude oil.

Northern life, this refinery is the worlds smallest. It could shut down and would have no impact on prices. As for reducing rates the operators can do that anytime they want.

I knew it wouldn’t take long to go up, it never does…. we could be back at $1.509 before Easter

And not only that price. Used to be mid grade gas was 10c. Litre more. Now it’s 20c..

This just proves that price gouging was true all along. Gas companies charge whatever they damn well feel like because they can and people will pay it as we really don’t have much choice. Pay or find other ways, that’s how I see the gas folk.

We will have to see how it goes across the Country. My guess is that locally they are gearing up for the Winter Games, and intend to stick it to us for the next month, and then try and keep the prices high.

Unfortunately when the price goes up, the Government makes more money, so we will not get any help from them.

In any event it will be interesting to see what happens. Costco stands to lose money during the winter games because a lot of their out of town customers cannot get accommodation in Prince George. Maybe they will try to make a buck on gas.,

If I can theorize conspiracies about this for a minute, I’d say perhaps the Provincial and Federal governments have gone to the gas companies and said “Look we’re losing revenue here, up yer prices” would I be far off?

All at the same time and the same price, collusion? Can’t be.

Everything which is based on the US dollar, such as oil, always goes up when our dollar goes down.

Hahaha there is that old $1.50 number again. People have been saying “it will be $1.50 a liter by next spring/summer/fall” for about a decade now. I guess if you keep repeating it then your prediction will be right eventually?

Schools in District 57 are closed for the two weeks of the summer games, so we will have less teachers and assistants, and students driving to and from schools,. We have 2100 teachers and assistants, and 14,239 students in school district 57, so will be a lot of people hanging around the games. Everyone driving to and fro should burn up a lot of gas.

Nobody seems to bat an eye when the price of milk or bread (or most other consumer goods) goes up, but if gas goes up, look out! Everybody comes out of the woodwork with their theories.

It’s true, the government has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue because of the price of oil and loss of taxes collected on gas. If you don’t think that has an effect on us all in one way or another you’re dreaming.

Yes JB you are the envy of all with your wisdom. Wow so enformed.

What’s the matter, 8? Are you upset that there’s far more truth to JB’s comment than you are willing to admit??

Amazing isn’t it. Oil drops in price and the Cdn dollar tanks yet the USA the world’s largest oil producer has their dollar flying high.
Gasoline in the Phoenix area is as low as $1.71 a US gallon. This even during super bowl weekend. The $1.71 a US gallon works out to 57 cents a liter using an exchange rate of 1.25. Wonder why the gasoline price here in Phx is less than 1/2 of that a year ago, yet in PG the gouging continues. If not for Costco the price would probably not of dropped at all.

I heard from someone who now’s someone that the moon landings where faked.

Nobody seems to bat an eye when the price of milk or bread (or most other consumer goods) goes up, but if gas goes up, look out! Everybody comes out of the woodwork with their theories.

Yes JB but if I buy a 100 loaves of bread at twenty cents a loaf more it will take me a long time to use up that bread but if I buy a 100 liters of fuel at twenty cents a liter more it won’t take me long to use up that 100 liters of fuel.

They can just jack up the income tax JB!

So why did the price of gas go up?

Why don’t people stop worrying about the price of gas and just buy oil stocks when the price goes up. It all evens out.

Resident: “Gasoline in the Phoenix area is as low as $1.71 a US gallon. This even during super bowl weekend. The $1.71 a US gallon works out to 57 cents a liter using an exchange rate of 1.25.”

You left out the fact that our gasoline is heavily taxed. Not so in the US.

There’s a simple solution for those who think the price of gas is too high… simply use less. or buy a more efficient vehicle.

But no matter what the price is, high or low, people will complain about it. It’s like a favourite local pastime.

One of the main factors in the high cost of consumer goods is the cost of transportation. The price of gas/diesel is the main villain.

So high costs of gas/diesel=high transportation costs=equal high consumer goods cost (loaf of bread)

Problem is when the cost of fuel goes down, usually the transportation costs, and consumer goods costs remain the same. So we don’t get the benefit of lower costs of consumer goods, or transportation because of the lower price of fuel.

So we are getting **ripped** seven ways from sundown.

Welcome to Gouger City.

Those are good points, Palopu, but remember that Prince George isn’t the centre of the universe. You see this same pattern no matter where you go.

I have no idea why it went up so fast, but I will dare saying we can count on it going up a lot faster than it went down…
how long until we are at $1.509 a liter…. Easter?
