What a Show!
Prince George, B.C. The opening ceremony for the 2015 Canada Winter Games was built on the theme “Journey With Us”, one of the slogans for the 2015 Games.
( at right team BC enters CN Centre)From the message from Prince George Lyn Hall, reminding all in attendance that all roads lead to Prince George, rivers, railways, highways, Prince George is the ‘hub’ of the north of B.C. “If ever there was a year to be our guest, 2015 is it” said Mayor Hall, as he told the capacity crowd about the Games, the City’s centennial, and UNBC’s 25th anniversary, all celebrations happening in Prince George in 2015.
To reinforce the journey with us theme, and celebrating the different journeys athletes have taken to get to the Games, competitors were seated in sections surrounded by floor paintings of railways, roads and rivers.
While each team was led by a flag bearer, there were also lantern carriers.
The Official Games torch, the Roly McLenahan Torch, was used to light railway lanterns that were then sent to each province where the lights visited numerous communities.
The lanterns returned to Prince George, as each athletic team had a flag bearer, and a lantern carrier.

The Prince George Cougars’ Andy Beesley had the honour of singing the national anthem in both official languages and the Lheidli T’enneh Children’s choir sang it in Carrier..
Audience members were invited to Illuminate the North by switching on their ‘Illuminate the North’ app on their smart phones. The glow of the green shimmering aurora borealis could be seen throughout the CN Centre.
Premier Clark praised the athletes in her welcome, “Today in our midst we have future Olympians who will stand on the world stage and give us more reason to cheer.”
She then invited the Canada Games Flag to enter the CN Centre.
The flag bearers were Eric Bedard, Bo Hedges, Joy Ward-Fera, Susan Auch, Kelsey Serwa and Cathy Priestner all Canada Games Alumni, and Olympians.
Host Society Chair, Anthony Everett had the moment of the night, when he called on the athletes to stand so he could take a ‘selfie’ with in the background.
It was Lou Passaglia who carried the Rory McLenahan torch into the CN Centre, where he passed it to Anthony Everett, who carried it to Trent Seymour who held it for a moment, then Everett carried it to athlete Morgan Aucoin who along with Everett, lit the Canada Games Flame Cauldron
With the flame aglow, the Games were declared “Officially Open”
Editor’s note:
Correction has been made to reflect the correct name of Morgan Aucoin.

A very good show! Nicely done Prince George!!
Great job by the organizers & volunteers!! Couldn’t be prouder of my home town. Good luck to all the athletes, have fun.
well done Prince George! The show was great.
I have to admit the commercials show casing northern BC were excellent.
It really portrayed Prince George as a real cool place to visit, live and be part of.
I’ve never felt so proud to be a part of Prince George.
Would have been better if our local TV station carried live feed of the ceremonies.. After all the millions spent on the games, they couldn’t afford to do that???
I really don’t have any interest in these games. It bothers me that I am ending up having to help pay for a festival that I have zero interest in through my property taxes. Wish I could get city taxpayers to subsidize my entertainment choices.
The opening ceremony was great, I thought Mayor Hall’s welcoming speech was fantastic. I really liked the way the organizing committee showed that you don’t need to spend huge amounts of money for big name talent to showcase an entertaining event. Loved the young children singing the national anthem in Carrier(?) language. Very impressed.
Missed the show and unfortunately will not to get to take part in a lot of events due to work commitments. However I definitly feel a sense of community that I haven’t felt here before. Now is the time for PG to shine..!
Stillsmokin, local TV stations often seem to have blackouts for local events, hockey games etc.
Not at all unusual, in case you haven’t noticed. Would be hard to sell tickets if we could all sit in our living rooms watching on our big screen TV’s!
I don’t think that the Cougars, Spruce Kings, Vancouver Canucks, etc. could survive if all local games were broadcast live into the local market!
Unfortunately like tonight I will end up missing the lions share of the games due to my work schedule and by all accounts from what I’ve heard from the athletes so far has been nothing but positive about PG good to hear
Will be coming back to PG to volunteer for the second week and looking forward to it. Wonder if there is somewhere on the web where I can watch the openning ceremonies.
TSN2 is carrying the games and opening ceremonies
For DPJ and others…..
Canada Winter Games events are available live or archived for later viewing on the internet at the following web address:
http://www.sportscanada.tv/canadagames
There is a daily live broadcast schedule on the site.
As of a few minutes ago , there are 2 archived events available to view:
(1) the original torch ceremony that took place in 2014 in Ottawa
(2) the opening ceremonies that took place at CN Centre on Feb. 13 in PG.
Go directly to the posted site or find it by searching information which is found on the 2015 canada winter games site.
DPJ they are live streaming the Games on CanadaGamesTV on the web. I think there is a link from the Games website. I’m not sure if there are archived broadcasts or not. TSN is the national media partner so they’ve got exclusive TV rights… Hence no live local broadcaat. Last night was amazing! Prince George is a wonderful community and we showcased ourselves well at the Opening Ceremony. Can’t wait for the downtown festival to start today!

well some of them anyways
We watched it on live streaming from a website and the opening ceremonies are archived already:
http://www.sportscanada.tv/canadagames/index.php/week1/opening-ceremony/52
It is the entire TSN feed including commercials.
TSN2 is a paid subscription channel and we didn’t want to order it, and found this website instead.
I don’t imagine there’s ever been that much French spoken in public in PG. :)
Beesley was great singing the anthem!
I must say it was wonderful to see the young children singing on stage. The cauldron was much nicer looking than the stove pipes they have in Vancouver.
Where can I find out who is playing who ?
Eg: Women’s Hockey or Ringette ??
Can you see the blue box on the screen that says “2015 Canada Winter Games Events Calendar” ? Click on it.
Okay. Sorry, it doesn’t list the competitors.
This is Awesome. Best wishes to our local athletes, keep the gold here?
BUT it is how you play the game, winning IS icing on the cake!

Thanks anyway.
