Busiest Day in YXS History
Prince George, B.C. – Thousands of athletes, coaches and visitors will pass through the gates at YXS today.
It’s transition day for the Canada Winter Games and CEO Stu Ballantyne says it will be the busiest in the airports’ history.
“There’s 71 flights that are going to land and take-off (including apron V). There’s approximately 1,200 athletes each week. It’s a few less athletes in week 2 and they come with around 500 coaches each week so there’s 3,400 people. We have to do that exchange today.”
The Prince George Airport Authority says it will result in an increase of over 325% on their regular daily traffic.
“It requires lots of work for the airport. They’ve done an amazing job for us,” says Ballantyne.
He says there will also be a major transition going on to ensure the proper accommodations are in place.
“All of the beds in all the hotels where the athletes and coaches stay all have to be transitioned. The rooms get set and there’s gifting and things like that for each athlete. A lot of work in a short period of time.”

The 71 Flights will take place over three days during the games.
1. Feb. 12th when the first bunch arrive.
2. Feb. 21st (Transition Day) when the first bunch leaves and the second bunch arrives, and
3. Mar. 1st when the last group leaves.
The busiest day of course is Feb. 21st which is transition day. So roughly 28 flights on transition day.
The info is on the YXS website.
Hi Palopu….I appreciate you pointing out the discrepancy. I was told at YXS that there were in fact 71 flights coming and going from the terminal and apron V today…I was also told on a typical Saturday that number is about 20. Regardless I will follow up on this…thanks….Greg Fry.
