Jansen Harkins Named Denny’s WHL Player of the Week

Monday, March 2, 2015 @ 1:31 PM

The Prince George Cougars are pleased to announce that 1997-born forward Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, B.C.) has been named the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week. In two games last week down South, Harkins recorded a goal and six assists, including the overtime winner in Friday’s 5-4 Cougars victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds. The next night in Everett, Harkins paced the Cougars offense with three assists in a 5-1 victory over the US Division leading Everett Silvertips.

It has truly been a breakout season for the draft eligible forward. In 61 games this season, Harkins has registered 19 goals and 57 assists for a team high 76 points. Harkins also leads the team with 24 power play points and 20 multi-point games. Over his past eight games he’s scored two goals and added 14 assists for 16 points. He and his linemates Chase Witala (6G, 7A) and Zach Pochiro (7G, 8A) have combined for 44 points over the past eight games. The offensive contributions from Harkins and his linemates were a big contributor in helping the Cougars to a 6-2-1-1 record in February.

On February 16th in Edmonton, Harkins recorded his 100th career WHL point, making him the second fastest Prince George Cougar 17-year-old to ever reach that milestone (The fastest being Blair Betts). Harkins joins Betts, Nick Drazenovic and Troy Bourke as the only four Prince George Cougars to ever reach 100 points in their 17-year-old seasons. Heading into action this week, Harkins needs just two assists to surpass Quinn Hancock (58 assists) as the single-season assists leader in Prince George Cougars franchise history.

Last month, Harkins represented the Prince George Cougars at the 2015 BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game for Team Orr, and recently he was ranked as the 18th best North American Skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Mid-Term rankings list. During the summer he helped lead Canada to a Gold Medal at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament which took place in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Harkins and the Cougars have won five of their last six games, and will begin the month of March in third place in the B.C. Division standings. Up next for the Cougars is a three-game homestand which starts Wednesday night against Jake Virtanen and the Calgary Hitmen.

The Cougars only have five home regular season games remaining in 2014-15. Do not miss your chance to be a part of the action! Get your tickets from Ticketmaster at: 250-564-5585 or visit: http://www.ticketmaster.ca/Prince-George-Cougars-tickets/artist/833514 for more details.
