Winter Games Asset Sales Continue
Prince George, B.C.- The sale of 2015 Games assets continues and not everyone is happy with the way the sale is being handled.
Last week, the doors of the Canada Winter Games warehouse were opened to staff, City of Prince George employees and host society members. They got the first crack at buying up items that were purchased for use during the Games. The list of items includes everything from coffee pots to tables and chairs, sheets, and a multitude of hand tools.
When asked why the doors weren’t open to the general public when it was the taxpayers of Prince George who put up the cash in the first place, Games spokesperson Mike Davis says the size of the sale is what was considered prohibitive “It is a big process to allow everyone access at the same time. This sale is very logistically challenging.”
So, instead, the sale of assets has been broken down into three groupings. The first sale has already happened, the second will take place on the 19th and 21st from noon to 7 p.m. and will be open to just the volunteers “The volunteers put in intense hours during the Games” says Davis.
The doors will be opened to the general public for the final round of sales on March 28th and the 30th. “We are trying to make sure everyone has a chance” says Davis.
The warehouse is located in the old City Yard, at 504 -4th Avenue.
All proceeds from the sale will be channeled into the Games Legacy fund.

City employees are getting first crack at purchasing the items? That’s a joke, right? It’s not as though they haven’t sucked enough out of the taxpayers already.
I really doubt there will be a huge rush. “It is a big process to allow everyone access at the same time. This sale is very logistically challenging.” Doesn’t even make sense to me. You couldn’t pay me to go down there.
I believe we will get the privilege of paying for the short fall..
and only a very few and their FRIENDS will make anything out of this extravaganza.
It is a little insulting that city employees get first shot. Volunteers should have been first, then the public….. Or just the public right out of the gate!
The response from Mike Davis on why the sale is not open to the general public is what is called politically correct. Amazing how gov’t employees can produce a statement that means absolutely nothing and in general is nothing more than a cover thy ass statement.
How can the Winter Games Committee, organize the games, the volunteers, etc; which is a huge task, that requires all sorts of logistics, etc;, and then in the next breath state.
**It is a big process to allow everyone access at the same time. This sale is very logistically challenging.**
The sale is being handled the way it is, because that is want they wanted to do.
So, the City Staff, and Volunteers, get the elevator, and the tax paying citizens get the shaft.
If they truly wanted to ensure that everyone had a chance, they should have had the public at large go first, then what was left could be purchased by the volunteers, or City Staff. City Staff, and Volunteers could have been considered at the public at large if they wanted.
This situation actually stinks when you think about it. A slap in the face to those who paid for the games, and supported them.
Volunteers first, everyone else second and at the same time. City of PG staff??? WHY exactly do they get in before a VOLUNTEER or any other City of PG Taxpayer??? Also, paid games staff are in first? I think not. This was very poorly thought out.
Who is involved in this decision.. Its not rocket science to open it up to everyone, that’s just a pathetic excuse to give city employees all the gravey.. Wonder how many where shopping during working hours?
I am just waiting for the reason to keep the games tax.. Let me guess, to,pay for all the losses of sales of winter games goods.. If you want winter games stuff I am sure kijijiji is now loaded with it as our lovely city employees sell it off for profit..
Yeah nothing wrong with how you handled this Davies.
City of P.G. staff getting first crack?? The Items should have been auctioned off that would have saved the tax payers money and everyone would have had a fair chance to buy the items. I think our council should look into how this was handled. If we hadn’t read this site we wouldn’t even have know about it.
Ebay and/or Kijiji are hard.
I have a feeling that Ben wouldn’t let me post what I would like to post about this!! So, instead I will say that I find it interesting, suspect, pathetic, etc that we now hear about this, AFTER the first sale has already happened!
The FIRST SALE, the one where Games staff, City of Prince George employees and host society members had first kick at the can!
This is just another slap in the face to taxpayers! You’d think that we would be getting used to that by now!
By the way, I’ve tried and have been unsuccessful in finding out what kind of salaries were paid to Winter Games Staff. Sure would be nice to know what was paid and to whom over the course of the Games! How much do you want to bet that the salaries were pretty darn good?
Did you complainers think for a minute that you got off your lazy butts and actually did something in the community the community might give back. Since when did you become so entitled? All you people do is just sit infront of your computers and wait for the news and then complain. Get out more, enjoy life. There is more happening out there than 250 news.

What does giving back have to do with city employees getting first crack at the CWG assets? Absolutely nothing. When did they become so entitled?
Not politically correct, more like conflict of interest
This just reeks of greed for an elite clique
First, try to steal the jacket off the backs of the volunteers after they were done with the volunteers, then hoard all the legacy to one group.
mos, in your infinite wisdom, please tell us what exactly our lazy, over compensated and self entitled city employees have done to justify getting first crack at Winter Games assets!!
Let me guess, you or your spouse work for the City??
….so, next time there’s a surplus in one of the budgets, don’t reallocate it to something that would benefit the taxpayers with their tax dollars, rather just divvy it up amongst the PG staff instead. Similarities yes?
Mos, what did the volunteers get for their contribution? Yes, of course they received some praise to their face. Then a slap in the face when their legacy “jacket” was suggested to be taken back.
Total disgusting- These item’s should have been veiwed and then auctioned off.
This is so retarded, the tools should at least be repurposed. They were bought originally at full price, then they’ll be sold at half price to a PG employee, then when the same item on one of the maintenance crews breaks or is worn out, there’ll be another purchase at full price. You’d think that a lot of these items could be repurposed or reused somewhere in the city system, rather than liquidating.
“Proceeds to go to the legacy fund”, more like proceeds of crime.
Not sure if it is true or not but a friend told me beds, blankets, sheets etc that were bought were taken to the dump? If this is true, with so many in need why did they not donate?
I have to agree with many of the posters here. City employees should not be given 1st dibs.
Any amount raised from these items should help pay off the debt.

Who the dickens are you? There are lot of people who have posted who have given back to the community more than you will ever know! Get a life and stop judging posters. You would be amazed at who some of these people are!
I am sure you are aware that people can post from anywhere?
Get a life.
What’s this about volunteers being asked to give their jackets back? Is that true?
I can definitely see giving volunteers first crack at it. Do not understand the city employee thing at all.
Ummm, guessewhat, the community pretty much takes and takes. The taxpayer
pretty much pays and pays. you must be a city employee.

I just about fell out of my chair laughing at your comment onemansthoughts. lol
Do not know where you get the idea I would be a city employee. Far from it. lol You should slow down on your reading…..:)
Mos; If it was not for 250 news we would not know what is happening in this City so thanks Ben and Elaine. Who knew about this Garage Sale for certain people, who set it up? This is tax payers dollars. I would like to know who bought what and for how much? The volunteers did a great job but this is a whole different issue and our Council should be looking into it. Are you a city employee that got lucky ?
Not sure we will ever get all the facts attached to these Winter Games.
There were a number of problems that were not actually advertised such as a shortage of bunk beds for the athletes and a large number of beds had to be purchased at the last minute from Ikea, in Calgary/Edmonton. This would mean a huge cash outlay, plus the transportation costs, etc; Apparently the plan to use the beds from the Olympics held in storage in Vancouver, went awry, when they discovered that there were not as many bunk beds in Vancouver as they thought.
Now of course the question is. Where did these bunk beds go?? Where did the thousands of sleeping bags go??? Some bags are being sold through charity organizations, however they don’t account for them all,.
As far as the jackets go, some volunteers couldn’t get rid of theirs fast enough. By the end of the games they were somewhat tired of volunteering. Rumour has it that there was a hell of a lot less than 4500 volunteers and a lot of people were working extra shifts.
This fiasco with giving City employee’s and volunteers first pick at the spoils was a bad decision, and should be looked into.
All in all the games seemed to come off pretty well, all things considered, however we should NEVER forget that it was paid for by taxpayers money, so we too are entitled to as much as anyone else when it comes to selling off whats left.
PS”: Mos doesn’t know what he/she is talking about. Seems like another follower of the Rah, Rah’s.
Canada winter games legacy fund ? Tough trying to research them and their money trail . Do greed and jelousy go together ? Seems there is enough of that to go around . Maybe it’s better in abbots ford across the river from the abbots mission in mission .
I have been a huge games supporter from the start with not a bad word to say about the games – until now! City employees getting first dibs is complete BS. Another point I haven’t heard mentioned is WHO priced this stuff? Tax payers buy it and then society members and or city employees set the pricing to but it back themselves? That sounds a little like a conflict of interest, no?
hey fellas I heard that the city employees got the great sale price and when it gets to be your turn retail + 10%…………just kidding.
. My spouse is a stay at home mom. I am self employed. In my infinite wisdom I think that you people still having nothing better to do than whine about a coat and some coffee makers. Get out more.
what a joke ,, televisions bunk beds ,, lots of good stuff for the city employees to hoard first , who came up with this idea ???,,, name please.
Mike Davis ,,, tell whoever told you that this was the way to go is wrong, PG citizens first
I agree with the general sentiments expressed here;
The process stinks.
At the very very least, all of the Games volunteers should have had first crack at the bargains, then the public, incl. CPG employees.
The dispersement of surplus items from the ‘Games should have been auctioned publicly. Cronyism has reared its’ ugly head.
metalman.
I would think this is a crime. Is it even legal to allow the government employees that bought the stuff, set the price for the sale, and then got the monopoly on buying the ‘surplus’ items. This has got to be illegal through some sort of conflict of interest law for government employees? At minimum this is corruption in its purest form.
I also have a sour taste watching the ‘post games’ job application TV ads by Anthony the CEO… its like a tax payer paid political ad with a politician looking to buy his next position of influence. When does this guy get to stop spending our tax dollars.
