Victoria Hopes to Curb “Left-Lane Hogs”
Prince George, B.C. – Watch out left-lane hogs, the provincial government has you in their sights.
Transportation Minister Todd Stone confirmed as much while in Prince George recently.
He says they plan to deal with the issue in a couple of ways.
“First get law enforcement to have better tools in the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), to actually issue tickets and know that those tickets are going to stand up in court,” he said.
“Currently it is against the law to be in the left-lane unless you’re passing but very infrequently tickets are written because the language in the MVA is not as clear as it needs to be.”
Stone confirmed driver education will also be beefed up.
“So we’re going to work with our safety partners ICBC and law enforcement on a coordinated campaign, much like we do with the counter attack and shift into winter campaigns.”
He said changes are needed because left-lane drivers are “actually a menace to yourself and a menace to other people potentially, and is one of the leading causes of driver frustration.”
Stone said British Columbians can expect the changes to come this spring in time for the summer driving season.

What about those that drive super slow (well below the speed limit) in single lane, but as soon they reach a passing lane they’re travelling well over 100 and not allowing anyone to pass? Too many times I came across this last summer and saw quite a few really close calls from people who were obviously frustrated and passed when they really shouldn’t have.
About time!
I noticed the hart hiway has “keep right except to pass” signs but no signs on hiway 16 west. Whats up with that?
I went with the flow yesterday on the Hart (70kph limit) and the speed in the slow lane was 100. Vehicles were going faster than this in the speeding lane. And it was good until there was a car in the speeding lane probably doing the speed limit. (He ended up turning left just after one of those signs urging him to keep right.) Anyway this led to some dangerously quick lane changes by the speeders cutting in front of the vehicles in the slow lane. So it seems there needs to be more left turn lanes off the Hart so the people turning left don’t impede the speeding lane. (:
seems the government was going to curb, impaired drivers, speeding, and texting too..
my question to them
how is it working out for you?
yes, not so good…
To peegee;
I think that the only way some people have control, maybe the only control part of there lives. Brain dead mental meeks. The same ones that merge at the Pine Center yield ramp and yield at the Highway 16 west merge entrance lane, just down the road.
Ya do 90 in the 60 zone at the bottom of the hart hill and still get past.
This better not apply to highways that run through a community. If there is a sign that states it fine but otherwise if I’m going up Peden Hill in the left lane too bad for you. The Hart has a sign that states that law so I stay in the right lane unless I’m passing or about to be turning onto a side road like Austin Road.
I have to agree with pookerjams. Highways that run through a community should not be included since there will be left turns and there are also many people turning onto the highway from the right. I come in from the west and there is Vanway, Bonvoyage, Westgate, and then the side road before Walmart. Many people assume that they can just pull out onto traffic even though it is a yield. I will change into the left land when I am able in order to allow them to pull out but many times it is not possible so I will drive in the left lane to avoid this. It all comes down to common sense people. Drive the speed limit, and use that blinking thingie that lets others know what you are doing :)
Wonder if this will apply to logging trucks running through PG loaded in the left lane racing empty chip trucks in the right lane from light to light?
“Currently it is against the law to be in the left-lane unless you’re passing but very infrequently tickets are written because the language in the MVA is not as clear as it needs to be.”
Well, Minister Stone, you have overlooked the fact that many 4 lane highways have exit lanes which can only be entered by vehicles which are in the left hand lane! You better make allowances for drivers to be NOT breaking the law when doing just that from the left hand lane!
You are bravely stating that the ONLY justification for being in the left lane is for PASSING! That eliminates the reason for being in the left lane ahead of a left exit – a bummer because no one who is pasing in the left hand lane will let one into the lane from the right hand lane! I tried it many times and inspite of the left turn signal being on for a kilometer or more they will not back off a bit and let you change lanes!
My suggestion to you: Back to the drawing board, Sir!
Everyone used to stay in the right lane years ago except to pass, it worked awesome. Then these left lane hogs started showing up for some reason. It sure makes the roads a lot more dangerous with this type of driving behavior. I am sure glad they are bring in this law that I thought already existed. Some of the logging trucks have to get in the left lane early to set up a left turn…because of all the rude drivers now a days.
littlebird, never give up your right of way. Not only does it cause confusion but the confusion can cause an accident. Driving in the left lane to “help” drivers pulling on to the highway will cause those behind you to pass on the right and possibly collide with the vehicles who now think you gave them the right of way to turn onto the highway. This is a classic case where the vehicle in the left lane should get a ticket and a percentage of the collision onto their insurance. You can only hope they have a dash cam to get your particulars as I have no doubt you will flee the scene. Or even better the car you gave up the right of way to hits the car passing you causing it to get pushed into your lane and vehicle.
Politicians need to be seen doing, but not actually doing anything at all. Not sure who said that – maybe it was me. Okay, how does this day in traffic court go. “I was doing 72 km in a 70 zone, and the police officer gave me a ticket because I was restricting the flow of traffic, but I was planning on making a left turn ahead.”
The cop would have to follow the lane hog and watch him miss at least two intersections without turning, to negate the I was planning on turning argument.
And I’m sure many of you have seen RCMP cruisers drive up the Hart in the left lane, with their cruise control pegged at 70 km an hour, pretty much daring anyone to pass them on the right – so clearly they don’t think that rule applies to someone doing the speed limit. It’s a goofy law they’re going to write, because really, it can only apply to someone doing under the speed limit, in the left lane. If you’re doing the speed limit, the judge will rightly ask, then why were people trying to pass you? BCracer has it right. Talk talk talk talk, but never any enforcement of the current rules. Any given morning in the 60 k section off the Hart, people are doing 90 – ever see radar?. And speaking of left lane hogs, routinely cars stop in the left lane to turn into the Husky to get their morning coffee – is that even legal?
So, as I understand the logic, those who wish to drive at whatever speed they choose, ignoring the posted speed limits, have the green light to do so. Those who choose to obey the law or perhaps drive 5 – 10 km over the limit will be ticketed if they happen to be driving in the left lane. Sure sounds like progress to me. On the other hand, while the police are there to ticket the “slow” drivers perhaps that will also give them an opportunity to ticket the drivers who feel that it is their God given right to drive at whatever speed they choose and everyone else should get the &^%$# out of the way. One last thought, the signs say slower traffic keep to the right which begs the question, slower than what? the posted speed set by highway designers or the speed which some believe they can do because they are such great drivers?
They are now putting off ramps from the freeway in Vancouver on the left side of the highway.(Underpass) So if you plan on leaving the freeway you need to be in the left lane, and in all probability you will slow down to make the exit. How do the laws apply to this scenario.
If the speeders in the left lane would just slow down. They are usually 20k above the speed limit, we wouldn’t have a problem.
Seems some peoples lives are so boring the only excitement they get is speeding to work, or Tim Hortons.
If the speeders in the left lane would just slow down. They are usually 20k above the speed limit, we wouldn’t have a problem.
——
The problem is the inordinate number of pathetic little people who seem to think it’s their god given right to drive in the left lane.
Traffic would flow so much better if everyone stuck to the right lane except for those times when they need to pass someone who is going slower then they are or they need to make a left turn in the next couple of hundred meters.
But, unless common courtesy and common sense make a remarkable comeback, we are stuck the government having to force these laws on us.
This is going to cause mayhem.
They need to clearly define where this applies. Urban versus highway / freeway.
I can see the aggressive morons that think any four lane road including urban roads should keep the left lane clear for them to speed free of the encumbrances of those annoying fellow humans that need to turn left. So they will self-righteously bumper nudge them to speed or get out of the way.
Or we’ll have the law abiders staying in the right lanes until the very last second then yank their cars into left lanes to turn left, causing the aggressive speeding jerks to spike their brakes and be righteously angry. Or the very same law abiders will start missing their turns because no one would let them turn into the left lane.
The province better pay for left turn lanes at every left turn off a four laner in every city in this province. Because I see a massive increase in rear end pile-ups cause by people trying to turn left off four lanes roads in urban centers, piled on by morons who start screaming down left lane roads thinking they are on a freeway and self indulgently clinging to their righteous belief in their interpretation of this new law.
I pity anyone trying to turn left onto one of these roads where both inside lanes will become dangerously fast. If you don’t drive a muscle car that goes 0 to 60 in 1.2 seconds, you will face a t-bone crash or an azz full of bumpers.
Axman nailed it. To those people that think they have this “right” to be in the leftane, take a look in your mirror. If there are 3,4 or ten cars behind you then YOU are the problem. YOU are the danger. YOU are causing tempers to flare. You can justify it all you want with speed limits and telling people to calm down etc etc but at the end of the day YOU are screwing up the traffic flow.
Don’t like speeders? Fine – Get in the right lane and let em go, call it in, lobby for more radar, there is a lot you can do besides creating a dangerous situation with your pompous self rightousness.
Moving frome the right Lane to the left to make a turn at Domano on Peden Hill going West is not that easy most times, the self absorbed won’t let you change Lanes, so my Answer now is , going across Cowart Road up College Heights Sub. Give in and be Happy.
Why the Rush in this Little City? Have any of you taken a Defencive Driving Course at Work latley ? Makes you aware of stupid things we do!

I’m not convinced that they are in a rush; I think it has more to do with their egos then anything else. A lot of people seem to take it as a personal insult went someone tries to get in front of them. I’ve lost count of the number of drivers who accelerate to close a 4 car gap in front of them simply to prevent someone else from getting in there.
It absolutely boggles to mind to think about this stuff. Is this REALLY a major issue? Have they REALLY thought about whether this will ever be successfully enforced? Have they REALLY looked at the current laws to see if the cases that could be addressed with this new law, could not have been addressed by existing laws? If the RCMP aren’t handing out tickets to people doing 20 KM/H over the limit heading up the Hart, do you REALLY think they are going to hand out tickets to people doing 10 KM/H over? I’d love to sit in traffic court to hear these cases when they come up.
IMHO, this is simply a case of a government running out of useful things to focus their time and efforts on.
I usually drive in the right lane, however if it is really slow I will go to the left and drive about 10 over the speed limit. Anyone in the left lane that wants to go faster than that and get a ticket will have to find a way around me.
As said on many previous occasions, these laws do not necessarily apply within City Limits, so you are pushing the envelope when you are 10 over on the Hart Highway, 97 South, and 16 West within City Limits.
If the Police would clamp down on speeding within the City and assess the necessary fines, especially on those roads named above, the problem would disappear. These people speed because they get away with it, and not for any other reason.
So instead of passing more **stupid** laws enforce the one’s we have on the books.
If they make it really clear this is for highways and freeways, NOT 4 lane roads within city limits, including highway through lanes, then all the above posts are moot.
The speeders in the left lane will only slow down when enforcement of the speed limit occurs. And the insurance companies are on their way to doing that. It will soon be a requirement to have a GPS/speed tracker in your vehicle to qualify for discounts on insurance premiums. If the tracker reports in that speeding has been logged, the insurance discount evaporates. Speed often and premiums will be added to the annual renewal bill. Works for me.
This is not me saying that “left lane hogs” are in the right. Highway traffic definitely flows better when passing lanes are used properly. But I’m getting a little tired of this idea that dangerous driving is caused by the hogs. If a slow car in front of you causes you so much distress that you are no longer able to make safe driving choices, YOU have your own issues that need working out. That’s pretty much the adult equivalent of a temper tantrum. I’m not directing that at people who are legitimately cut off or confused by a slow driver doing weird things. But you know the type – come speeding up behind you, can’t handle that you are only going ten over. You can feel the tension radiating off the vehicle. My 5 year old has more control over her emotions than some of these people do.
Just by the number of comments, clearly driving is an issue that’s important to all of us. Now, there are no comments on the stories where one person was shot and killed, and a house with children at home was shot at – at least not as I type this. Well, the two issues are related.
RCMP officers have told me that usually there’s usually 8 vehicles on general duty, but as soon as there is a major incident, the bulk of them get retasked to assist major crimes with the investigation.
So, when they are busy dealing with what is more than likely drug related killings and shootings, they are not patrolling and making the roads safer for the rest of us. So, if you’re one of those people who likes do a little pot, a little crack, coke etc., you are on the revenue side of the drug trade, and whenever the drug dealers decide to start shooting at each other, all of us are put in harms way, strangely enough, not by a drive by shooting, but by just bad drivers period.
It would be nice of the government would end this madness by legalizing it, but it would also be nice if people just quick buying the stuff and stick to the tried and true legal drug of choice – alcohol – so that the police could spend time making the roads safer, and of course, arresting those who drink and drive.
by slinky- “”I have no doubt you will flee the scene. Or even better the car you gave up the right of way to hits the car passing you”
Wow slinky. really? What an assumption. My point I am trying to make is the car pulling out on me because they didn’t yield but merge instead are the ones that are putting us in danger. It isn’t always that simple to drive in the right lane at all times is my point.
Never had anyone not yield at those four entrances to hwy 16 on me, maybe westgate on a heavy rush but never really an issue as the traffic is bumper to bumper anyway. Must be your vehicle or your actions causing them to think you are giving them the right of way.
