Help The City Make Tracks In Spring Clean Up

Sunday, March 22, 2015 @ 6:06 AM

IMG_9618Prince George, BC – The receding snowdrifts at roadsides mean City crews are turning their attention from snow removal to removing a winter’s worth of traction materials from streets and city lots…

Associate Director of Public Works, Gina Layte-Liston, is asking city residents to avoid parking on neighbourhood streets during spring sweeping, to ensure the fastest possible cleanup.

“If sweepers have to maneuver around parked cars, this slows sweeping and leaves a sandy and dusty area once the vehicle moves.”

Preventing that grit from making it into our airshed is a key concern.  “Removing traction material is important to reduce the dust that contributes to poor air quality,” says Manager of Sustainable Community Development, Tiina Watt, “But the manner in which the material is removed is equally important.”

To that end, the City’s Clean Air Bylaw outlines a number of requirements when it comes to dust, including the use of dust control procedures and suppression liquids, like air filters and water at all times.  (This requirement applies to leaf blowers, brooms, and vacuum sweepers.)  No sweeping activities are allowed during an air quality advisory.

Winter parking restrictions remain in place until the middle of April.  (For more information, click here)

Be nice to know where and when they plan on sweeping.

As usual BYLAWS are talking tough…
they only seem to pick on people who can’t protect themselves.
Heaven forbid bylaws officers have their feelings hurt.

considering that the street i live (juniper) has consistently been cleaned every year by two machines that go back and forth 9 times in one day and then never to be seen again for the rest of the season this is not a big deal; but what about the people who do not have a driveway and are forced to park on the street? if the city is only going to sweep the street once then it is really not fair to bar them from parking on the street – just put up a sign designating the one and only day they will be sweeping then people don’t have to stress out every day trying to figure out where to park

People don’t pay attention to important signs like stop, yield, merge or please don’t litter …do you really think they would pay attention to a “possible street sweeping tomorrow” sign ?

Ever seen a air filter on a leaf blower or broom? If you use water a leaf blower is useless as is a broom, just smears the dirt rather than moving it.

The traction material does not dust up the airshed, it is the sand/dust under it. When they wet it and sweep they pick up the pea size traction material but leave behind the sand/dust smeared over a wider area and as soon as it starts to dry and people drive over it you get dust billowing in the air. Dust is actually worse a day or two AFTER sweeping. If they didn’t wet it and just used vacuum dust control they would pick up more of the sand/dust and it wouldn’t spread over the entire width of the pickup broom, probably save some money as they would not need to send a water truck ahead of the sweepers. Filters would cost a bit but they are washable, I have used mine for over three years now in my big machine and have never replaced the ones in my smaller machine (just cleaned them) – mind you I do not do the same volume.
