Council To Hear Results of CWG Survey

Monday, April 27, 2015 @ 3:45 AM

Prince George, B.C.- Did the Canada Winter Games  make a difference  for Prince George?  That is the question a group of students from UNBC tried to answer, and tonight, they will present their results to the regular meeting of Prince George City Council.According to their survey 64% of those surveyed either agree or strongly agree that the Games increased Civic Pride  in Prince George, while 82% strongly agree P.G. should host similar events in the future.

The survey collected information from 393 people.  When  asked if  they thought  the Games were a good investment for the City, 5d1% said they agreed or strongly agreed  that  it was, and 60%  agree the Games improved the City’s image nationally.

But results were nearly  even   when asked if they believed the Games helped revitalized downtown.  34% agreed or strongly agreed it had,  31% disagreed or strongly disagreed,  and 29% said they were neutral on that  question.

Council will also  hold a public hearing on a change to the Official Community Plan to allow the development of a truck centre for Inland Kenworth.  The site is located at the junction of Boundary Road and Highway 97 South.

Council will also be asked to give final reading to the  local area service bylaw  to allow construction of  a sanitary sewer line  along Ridgeview in the Hart Highlands area.

I think the leveraging of federal dollars for a lot of the operating costs helped to make it a worth while investment for the payoff of community spirit and can do attitude that it helped to give PG.It helped us reflect on the good that PG has, which often gets overlooked.

As for the downtown even if PG grew substantially the downtown will lag behind in part because its to spread out with too many dumpy landlords in between, partly because it doesn’t have a local population other than those using government services… but mostly because large investments will always be hindered by close proximity to the industry that hangs pollution in the air-shed at times and also because of past path of the river essentially ran through the downtown down George, past the Library and Parkwood and into the slough that emptied into the Fraser at Fort Goerge Park (this was only 200-years ago). Which is why I was always surprised at the Hotel development next to the library with a parkaide to boot.

I think with the three big new hotels coming to PG over the next couple of years it will enhance PG’s future prospects greatly. It will change the sky line especially in the area of 16 West and will add something like 600 plus quality hotel rooms to the city. This is very much needed if we have all the resource projects coming on line, especially in he early years… later next phase we will need to retain the construction trades workers for more local rental accommodations so we can entice some of these workers to stay and buy a home.

I spent a year in the mid 80’s in Tumbler Ridge when it went from living in an RV in the Bush, to RV camps housing over 5000 people living in RV’s, and then eventually a town was built around these massive sprawling RV sites, and then some moved from the RV camps to real houses and apartment condo’s staying for the long term. During these booms we need to maximize the potential to convert transient workers into our future citizens and that is where our sustainable growth will come from… and I look to see politicians planning to accommodate for growth so it can be controlled if and when it happens.

The hotel rooms will be great, but with that many new hotels rooms, PG needs to work harder to become a destination, and a few new night clubs would go a long way for those kinds of workers IMO. I hope to see announcements in this regard that are not just taking advantage of depressed realestate, but actually looking to enhance the nightlife of PG through building a viable entertainment district.

As the last Winter Games plane left Prince George, and the Winter Games Committee for the Red Deer Games had their first meeting for the 2019 Winter Games, Prince George, like Grande Prairie, Whitehorse, and other Winter Games Cities faded into the background.

they only surveyed 393 people? how can one expect a true picture of the citizens feelings toward these games?
