Prince George, B.C. – Cottonwood Island Park is down to one trail.

Warming temperatures combined with the melting mountain snowpack has resulted in increased water levels on the Fraser and Nechako Rivers this spring.

As 250 News reported earlier this week, bank erosion has become more evident and rising waters have already washed away a number of Cottonwood trees (see story here).

Despite the rising waters, it didn’t deter this chickadee from seeking out its morning feed.

Every year the river gets wider and shallower at the mouth of the Nechako and eventually we will have another ice jam as a result that could cause emense disruption and damage. Where are the politicians that should be calling for a dredge go the mouth channel in this river or some rip rap along the shore channel to save the park trails and force the river to dredge itself.

To me this is a provincial issue, or would be if it was in the lower mainland. River mitigation is a provincial and federal issue, so why are we not represented properly?

Don’t feed wild animals. You aren’t doing them any favours. Quite the reverse actually.
