More Layoffs at Mt. Polley
Williams Lake, B.C. – Another 120 layoff notices have been handed out to workers at the Mt. Polley Mine. The members had been working on the clean up, repairs and remediation necessary in the wake of the tailing pond breach on August 4th of last year.
Steelworkers Local 1-425 President Paul French says there was just no more work for the employees, “The mine has expressed confidence a permit to resume mine operations will be issued, but there are no guarantees.”
A decision on that permit application is expected in June ( see previous story) and if given the green light, he expects mine operations to start again by mid-July.
Today’s layoffs follow another 50 in February and 36 more back in November.
French says all that’s left now at the mine “is a skeleton crew.”
