Prince George, B.C. – A fire in downtown Prince George destroyed two buildings last night.

The blaze broke out just before 10pm in the 1200 block of 3rd Avenue. Crews from all four halls arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the structure.

“Firefighting was hampered by the close proximity of neighbouring buildings and the intensity of the blaze,” says assistant Fire Chief John Law. “The fire quickly spread to an adjoining building while crews battled to bring the fire under control.”

He adds crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings noting customers in the adjoining restaurant (Nancy O’s) were evacuated without incident.

Law says it took two hours to douse the blaze and says there were no injuries.

Damages are extensive to both the building which housed Homework, and  the building which was, most recently, ‘Flipside’.  A  dollar amount has not been determined.

The cause is under investigation.

seriously… another fire. These downtown fires are getting ridiculous.

These fires are typically in old buildings built under building codes we no longer consider safe, housing businesses that don’t pull enough profit to invest in repairs.

Not unexpected, if you think of it.

After what happened next door to the Copper Pig a couple of years ago, glad that Nancy O’s came out relatively unscathed.

LOLcaust in the case of the Homeworks business they had just bought and reno’ed that building and the other one was being reno’ed for Nancy O’s to expand into. These businesses were both doing well.

Kind of sucks because those were two businesses that brought the right kind of people down town, the kind of people that actually contribute to “revitalization” or whatever City Hall is calling it these days! Not like pawn shops and pay day loan outfits! Here’s hoping they can get back on their feet asap!

I figure we will find out that it was some form of negligence that caused the fire. Innocent people always wear the brunt of others stupidity. Lets face it, it’s Prince George’s method for urban renewal. My heart goes out to the folks at Home Works, they did spend a lot of time and money in renovating that location not to mention the blood sweat and tears in making it happen. Pity

Yah Homeworks was great, I was in there the other day upstairs and the salesperson was telling a couple about the history of the building and how it was a super market and a n illegal gentlemans club upstairs. Very cool, sad to see it go

Detective is right. Fixing out downtown is rooted in great businesses like Homework, Nancy O’s, the Copper Pig, and others. I wish them all the success in the world and hope the rebuild goes well. I think it could be amazing if we could even get to the point where we have one nice block in the downtown with restaurants, shopping, and so on, it would be great!

Very sad for the great owner’s of these unique and impactful businesses.

…and for the record, the name is “Homework” not “Homeworks”. Just as Costco is not “Costcos”.
