Industry Warned to Be Extra Careful in Dry Woods

Friday, May 15, 2015 @ 9:13 AM

Prince George, B.C.- With the  Little Bobtail Lake fire raging, another at  Pelican Lake,  BC Wildfire Management is  warning industry to exercise extreme caution in the forests.

Several areas of the Prince George Fire Centre are currently experiencing “high” fire danger ratings, with the remainder of the region rated “moderate”.

Since April 1, 2015, the Wildfire Management Branch has responded to 31 wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre. It’s suspected that all but one of these fires were human-caused and therefore preventable. These fires serve as a reminder to anyone who is carrying out industrial activities in the province to remain vigilant.

Open fires are currently prohibited in the Prince George Fire Centre.

On the Friday of a long weekend maybe they should extend that warning to the public. Were these 30 human caused fires all started by industrial activities?

Industry has a strict set of guidelines they must follow according to Ministry of Forests regulations that vary depending upon fire danger ratings. Maybe the fire danger ratings should be higher than “moderate” and maybe some areas should be rated “extreme “.

Strange story indeed. Having spent over 30 years in the bush I can honestly say you will not find another group of people more careful in the hot dry weather then they are.

John Q. Public on the other hand, is another issue.

You are right on the mark axman. The people who work in the bush are protecting their jobs at the same time.

More forest fires are started by careless, idiots who should not be allowed outside of city limits.

every 100 hectares of forest burned, is likely equivalent to 50 person years of employment. between the logger, sawmill work, the railway workers, truck drivers, retail stores, service industry. It is a huge impact. Teach your children, having a campfire is not your right, it is an entitlement. Respect it.

Not to mention all the careless smokers that discard their butts out the windows of their vehicles. Fireworks should be band throughout the summer months. Fireworks have become readily available for people who lack common sense.

Those who normally take care in the woods don’t need these reminders and those who don’t care, won’t listen or read them anyways…
after all they are important and know it all.

All good comments, but it is still important to drive home the message as often as possible.
I think it would be useful to publish the causes of these 31 and all other wild land fires, if possible. That way the message will get through to more people. I’m thinking that some may relate to a forest fire started by say careless handling of fireworks.
metalman.

Every year I come across smouldering campfires left by stupid people. That’ll never change. Can’t fix the braindead.
