Regional District and Ministry of Environment Talking Garbage

Friday, May 22, 2015 @ 3:49 AM

Prince George, B.C.- it has been 6 years since the Ministry of Environment approved the Regional Solid Waste Management plan for the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, and it’s time to update that plan.

The plan lays out the vision for how the Regional District recycles, composts and disposes of garbage for the next two decades.   A review of that plan must be done every five years just to make sure it is in step with current needs.

The Regional District will conduct the review over the next couple of months and that means there will be meetings with stakeholders as well as public consultation.

All this taking place when the Ministry of the Environment announces it will be updating its own guideline for the way regional solid waste management plans are developed.

The Ministry says changes are aimed at removing red tape for local governments and making the planning and approval process more efficient. It has been a full eleven years since the Ministry updated its guideline.

The changes, say the Ministry, mean the there will be more clarity on ministry requirements, and will give local governments more autonomy while modernizing the process. The proposed changes will be released for public input later this summer. The final Ministry guideline is expected to be in place next year.

One wonders why there was not more clarity in the first place. What iteration are we seeing now from when the first guidelines were put in place? Can this on-going process be shortened, reduced, become less costly to the taxpayer?

It’s a bureaucracy, they have to justify all those civil service jobs somehow.

The City should have more control over garbage , drive around Cuddie Cres. and look at a Motel on Victoria St. and you will know what I am talking about.
