I’m not a conservative, and I am typically more left wing, but why the hell is there so much debate around door to door delivery. Many areas in PG have had the community boxes for over 20 years already. Sure, it’s a luxury to have the mail taken to your door, but it’s not a big deal to stop at the box on your way home.
The argument of it being less secure is ridiculous as well. I would prefer my mail be locked in a box, than just sitting in the box outside my house while I’m gone for the very predictable 8 hours in the day…

No clue pgjohn. I haven’t had mail delivered to my door since moving out of my parents house. I don’t see the issue either.

It’s not just delivery to your door, it’s about setting the corporation up for privatization.

Privatize the bulk junk mail delivery company? So workers won’t earn 30 bucks an hour to deliver what paper boys did for years earning pennies a day.

Good point Jimmy,
Why do we need bulk mail delivery?
We have television, radio and the internet for marketers to intrude into our time.
one cannot watch a news story on a website or youtube without being bombarded by a buy me now skit.

I am sure our sizable population of baby boomers, who are now senior citizens, would not appreciate the lack of Canada Post door service. One slip, one fall, one broken hip, if you are an elderly person, could be a death sentence. But who cares about them, right?

Senior citizens never leave their home either?
Perhaps when they’re coming back from grocery shopping, the doctors office, or any of the million services people need to leave their home for, they can stop at the mail box and grab their mail…
And if they’re truly not able to leave their home EVER, then they’re likely living in multi-family dwelling and have their mail delivered to their building.
Common sense for the win! Or at least I hope so…

Good grief. The sizable population of baby boomers who are now senior citizens haven’t had door service since they were kids.

I don’t really care about door-to-door delivery of mail either. On the other hand, if doctors would make house calls again…

Perhaps a little compassion and understanding about this issue is in order?
This could have happened in a parking lot, or even on his own driveway. This is a snow removal issue which can be addressed. This does not warrant paying someone $60,000/year plus benefits to deliver mail to a small area. Canada Post has been losing money, and it needs to restructure with the times.
Milk used to be delivered to the door too. Guess what? Times change.

Funny how a politician can posture like this. When they get into office and see the numbers, they often change their minds rather quickly.

Funny how, under this government, Canada is the first of the G7 countries to end all urban home mail delivery. All the following countries provide door delivery six days a week, except for Italy, who provides door delivery 5 days a week.
United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy and France. Perhaps we should be voting in a government that will actually undertake some research with these countries, to find out how they do it without going broke? Simply slashing and burning public services, which is standard Conservative fare, can no longer be only solution.

Some doctors still do make housecalls which is pretty incredible.
As for mail delivery, box it, its outdated, the walk is good exercise.
Now if I can just get rid of the Junk Mail……….

Every decision the government makes is a financial decision. We can’t afford everything. We have to decide what we are willing to pay for and what we won’t or can’t pay for any longer.
How long are we willing to subsidize Canada Post or CBC? The government doesn’t have any of their own money. Every $ they have comes from somebody else. (Us)

jim13136 and what of the preceding years? 226 million loss in 2011, 106 million loss in 2012, 193 million loss in 2013. Google it

Oh and jim13136 the 193 million dollar loss was a lot more except they sold off some corporate real estate which had a value of 279 million, you can only sell off so much to try and balance the books. Prior to the sale of assets the loss was 472 million in 2013.
The profit of 194 million for 2014 are due to growth in parcel delivery, new tiered rates, and lower benefits costs – where do you think these lower benefit costs came from? Did the union all of the sudden negotiate less benefits for their members? Over one million addresses have been converted to community mailboxes, that is where the savings came from to allow a profit for 2014. Less employees, less benefits costs.
Sophic Sage: USPS has stopped all lettermail delivery to new subdivisions, these will all have community mailboxes. In the US 30 million receive door to door delivery while 50 million have community mailboxes.
From a news article “Last year, the US Postal Service lost $16 billion, mostly due to dwindling mail volumes and payments into a mandatory fund for its future retirees’ healthcare. The agency, which does not receive taxpayer funds, is under pressure to modify its business model and raise revenues or risk requiring a bailout of nearly $50 billion by 2017”
